~ Review ~
These bars are available from Maximuscle.com for £25.99. However if you search around online you can usually find a discount. They are also available in many supermarkets or health food shops.
The bars come in several different flavours, cookie dough, blueberry smoothies, chocolate orange, chocolate and dark cherry chocolate. I have tried the chocolate orange and the cookie dough and they both taste exactly how they should and are very tasty. The main selling point of these bars are the high protein content. You can get about the same amount of protein in 75g of chicken breast but obviously these bars are ready to eat and don't need cooking. They are very handy to have before or after a workout. They are not hugely filling so you have to make sure you are quite disciplined and don't either eat too many or eat them when you don't really need any more food.
They come in boxes of 12. Unless you have lots of spare money I would suggest only eating them after a workout and when you don't have easy access to any food. If you had one a day it would cost you up to £65 a month. If you are eating them regularly then it is best to buy them in bulk as Maximuscle generally do a multi buy discount.
These are very useful but potentially expensive bars. They have a very high protein content without having loads of extra calories.
The Promax chocolate orange bars by Maximuscle introduced me into the use of supplements. I am a regular gym go-er and like everyone else, always looking for quicker results and an easy source of protein. The bars come in boxes of 12 where, the cheapest price usually comes in between £20 and £25 on the net although, there are offers once in a while. For frequent use they can be expensive but compare them to other protein bars on the market and they are of similar price. The abrs themselves come in very attractive shiny packaging which is typical of Maximuscle.
Each 60 gram bar provides 206 calories, 21 grams protein, 17 grams carbohydrates, 5.7 grams fat and 5.7 grams fibre making it of high nutritious value. It's a meal replacement bar but even as a snack it's low in calories. Its high in protein giving 21g making it great for those with goals related to muscle gains whether its size, strength, recovery etc. The high protein will also help slow down the digestion of the carbs which, will prevent a spike in insulin levels keeping blood sugar levels stable. This is vital for the bodies ability to be able to burn fat and build muscle. The 17g of carbs in the bar are made up of 9.5g sugar and 5.5g polyols. A lot of people don't know what polyol carbohydrates are, well they are sugar alcohols which are low in calories and do not spike insulin levels which is why they are used in most protein bars. The 9.5g of sugar may seem quite high but without it the taste of the bar would be sacrificed. After all most people looking at a supplement like this are probably going to be interested in replacing and killing cravings where, they would normally turn to a chocolate bar with more than double the sugar content. In the 5.7g of fat, 2.3g are saturated fats (bad fats) which is low. The bar is high in fibre with 5.7g which is an important aspect to a healthy diet. It will help u feel fuller and can also keeps the digestion system healthy.
Personally i ate the bars after workouts or when i struggled to fit a meal into a busy schedule. I also ate a bar when my sweet tooth was niggling. The chocolate orange flavour is nice, not as nice as a bar of dairy milk or your typical chocolate bars but considering the chemicals used to make them it's pretty impressive. The big setback of the bar is that it is extremely chewy! A lot of the protein bars on the market are the same but there are others which are not. My jaw genuinely ached on times which was annoying. It's also very sticky and will leave you with the dreaded pirate looking teeth. Not too much of a problem in the house but if you use them for convenient use on the go, it suddenly becomes your worst enemy as i soon discovered. The bar does help you feel full which is great but i would however, advise against use for the typical ectomorph looking to bulk up. It did help me recover from workouts slightly quicker in conjunction with my diet which was high in protein.
I would say there are better bars out there at the moment for a similar price but who knows, if Maximuscle make the bar easy on the jaw this could be a future contender.
