As I have mentioned in some previous reviews, my daughter's aunt (her dad's sister!) used to work in a Health food store and was obsessed with buying our daughter all kinds of health supplements and skin products, and I remember her one day demanding £25 for 2 of these boxes of Minami Nutrition MorDHA fish oil supplements! I am not big on these kinds of things, so told her dad he could pay for it, as I see no problem with her eating her 2 portion of oily fish a week which she loves eating anyway.
What are they...?
These are basically a box of soft gel "strawberry" flavoured capsules as a dietary supplement for giving children omega 3 fish oil.. Being the children's DHA formula they are recommended for children aged 3 +. In the box there are 30 capsules and each capsule is in a plastic sheet with a foil cover, so one can be popped out one by one. The capsules are rather large but easy to consume as they are designed to be chewed and this is easy to do so they are simple to eat. A box of 30 costs about £10.46 as I have seen them at their cheapest price on amazon. Children are to take one a day and they do not have any fishy aftertaste so as to encourage children to consume them.
Why take them...?
Fish oils are key for supporting brain development, growth, function and vision - DHA. About half of the brain and eyes are made up of fat, much of which is DHA, which is an essential nutrient for optimal brain and eye function. The purpose of anyone taking supplementary vitamins is normally because it is not consumed through foods we eat on a daily basis. Apparently children's diets today are notoriously low in the beneficial Omega-3 fats found in foods such as fish. (Or so the website for this product says, how do they know what we eat for lunch and dinner every day?!) so these dietary supplements are to overcome this barrier and ensure children get what they need.
So, the selling point compared to other products is that they offer the highest concentrated omega-3 fish oils on the market, which means you can consume less and they are better for you. Apparently there are 5 reasons to take Minami:
1. Minami oils utilize liquid CO extraction and are exposed to 400% less heat than other leading brands with no use of harsh solvents and no saturated fat as a filler.
2. Minami is one of the highest concentrated omega-3s available. (Basically the same as the first reason right?) one capsule contains 312 mg Omega-3s, including 241mg DHA which is basically a very high quantity indeed.
3. Minami oils go through rigorous in house and third party testing and have low levels of oxidation as well as undetectable levels of dioxins, pesticides and heavy metals like mercury.
4. Minami used the latest Omega 3 research to formulate specific ratios of EPA and DHA to support the body and it's system.
5. Minami obtains fish from sustainably managed waters.
Phew! we made it through that boring list.... so is it any good...?
Well to be honest I must say I have no idea. Sure, my daughter seems to me quite healthy, and no complaints from the doctor. She never is really ill (can't remember she had even a hint of a sniffle even when she constantly snuggles up to me and I have ben pretty unwell over the last week and she has still been bouncing off the walls!) I would say she has a balanced diet as I make sure she eats her fruits and vegetable and I love to cook oily fish all the time anyway! Mackarel and Sardines are our favourite and we will eat pilchards when budget is low as they are cheap but still taste great. So I cannot say whether these capsules alone are the sole reason for her good health or perhaps she is just a lucky person with a strong immune system.
One thing I will say is that my daughter absolutely LOVES THEM. She thinks they are medicine and first thing every morning she will say "mummy can I have medicine please?" lol! She munches them whole like there is no tomorrow and always asks for more, making me feel bad when I say no she cannot, and must wait until tomorrow as it is dangerous to eat 2 in one day. So with this in mind, I thought "hmm perhaps these are nice and do taste like strawberry, let me give them a try." Well I did, and to me they are absolutely vile! They taste nothing like strawberry (saying that they don't taste like fish oil either anyhow) and they are a soft gel like consistency, but with one bit a whole load of liquid spews out and that is not pleasant at all. Anyway she likes chewing them like they are sweets or something so I guess its a good thing although I am surprised as she has such a sweet tooth I didn't think something like this would sit well on her tastebuds.
To sum up...?
Overall, these are decent for any parent looking for some good quality dietary fish oil supplements for their little ones and on that basis I would recommend them. My daughter seems to love the taste so I guess thats a plus for any parent whose kids are a fussy eater and think theirs won't like them. Personally for me, they seem a waste of money when I can just cook meals with oily fish so she gets her omega 3 intake that way! They seem rather overpriced and so when we finish the 2 boxes we have (some days she forgets so she doesn't actually take them every day as I don't remember unless she asks) I don't intend on repurchasing these again as they aren't 100% necessary.
