MyProtein Impact Whey Protein
Advantages: good quality and great taste
Disadvantages: need to buy a separate 25g scoop to ensure the right measurements
Whey protein comes from the liquid created as a by-product of cheese production. It should be known that, as it is a by-product of cheese, those with any intolerance should think carefully about whey. Whey protein is essential to build muscle, the requirements of the body to get in all the protein it needs whilst weight lifting is much higher than for a sedentary person, to get the full requirement per day, supplements are essential. Another great quality is that there is little fat in whey making it great for those wishing to build muscle and/or lose fat.
The great thing about whey protein is that is that it is digested into the body very quickly, this means the protein can be ready to use by the body fast. Typically a protein supplement is taken after a workout (and sometimes during) as it helps increase levels of amino acids in the blood, which is taken to the muscles for growth and repair.
For anybody deciding which protein to take it can be a daunting prospect, any type into google and you will be bombarded with hoards of proteins all claiming the same thing. To sift out the junk it is important to look at the nutritional information (just as you would with any food you buy).
Nutritional Information (per 30g):
Protein (dry basis) 24.6g
Protein (as-is) 23.6g
So for 100g of this protein you receive over 82g of protein, this is very respectable for a protein powder (especially for its price). You will struggle to find any protein that can provide you with this amount of protein for the same price. Remember its not the quantity of how much you buy but the quality. You will need less of this so it can go further. Other points to note about nutrition are that if used with water each serving (30g) only contains 118cal (milk will up the calorie amount but also give you more calcium, minerals and protein).
One thing that anybody will tell you about protein supplements is that they can taste incredibly bad. If you are to be taking one or two protein shakes a day it is important to find a taste that works for you (it will help keep you taking the supplement too). One good thing that the My Protein website do is that they provide this range in 25g serving samples for 0.99p. So you can try whichever flavour you like out before you decide to part with your cash.
There are a variety of flavours to choose from, the cheapest is unflavoured, this gives you the option to add your own flavouring if you want. I personally choose chocolate and strawberry; these are the best tasting flavoured proteins I have ever used. In addition to these there are banana, raspberry, chocolate nut, chocolate smooth, chocolate mint and vanilla (I have not tasted these flavours so can not give you an opinion on them).
The strength of this protein is its price. It can put some people off questioning the quality of the protein, however, as I have stated earlier the protein content is high and the flavour is good. There are 3 sizes to choose from (1kg - £12.49, 2.5kg - £27.99, 5kg - £47.99), I buy the 5kg bags, as they last the longest and provide the best value.
Having said all this, to gain noticeable weight gaining results it should be remembered this is only a supplement, it is important that as much as possible protein should come from lean sources as it contains other vitamins and minerals that are vital to the body. Only use this once or twice a day.
All in all, I would highly recommend this product, I use it and it works for me, the price is good, the taste is good and the quality is good.
Summary: highly recommend this product
