Do your research and make your own choice

I have known many many children that have used Melatonin every day, some for over ten years, with no side effects including my own Nephew. Some of these children have been prescribed Melatonin by a doctor and some haven't. Some had to change doctors a few times before they found one that was happy to prescribe it.

Melatonin is naturally occuring hormone in the pineal gland, it makes you feel sleepy when it goes dark. Not everyone produces enough Melatonin to make them sleep and in these cases it is possible to use Melatonin to gently and naturally get yourself to sleep. Not everyone feels that it is completely safe but in my experience it has been, most medications and suppliments could cause side effects. If you plan to take it or give it to someone else I would recommend that you do full research on it and take advice before taking it. All I can say is that several parents I know have reported wanting to smother their children through lack of sleep, one had been rehoused several times due to the noise her son used to make at night and each move made him worse as he was completely unsettled. After using Melatonin their lives have been transformed. All of the children have had improved attention, less frustration and aggression and better results in their education. The parents have been less fraught due to getting a full nights sleep, had a better relationship with their children and, in the cases of those that couldn't work before, they have been capable to get and hold down a job and get off benefits.

Melatonin is also used as a remedy for jet lag, it is rumoured to have anti ageing properties and prevent cancer, the last two claims haven't been proved conclusively although if you sleep more I should imagine that that in itself would have anti ageing properties, as for the cancer claim many things are claimed to help prevent cancer although none have been conclusively proven.

If you are suffering through lack of sleep this is one of the options that you can explore. Not all doctors will prescribe Melatonin but you can always ask for a second opinion and another doctor would be happy to. In Britain Melatonin is only available on prescription because it has not yet been approved as an over the counter remedy from pharmacies but it is available in Health Food shop. This is not the only, or maybe not the best, option available to you there are others out there, it is up to you to investigate and decide which is the best option for you. Everyone is different and when it comes to suppliments, medicines and natural remedies everyoe has their own opinion

While it's true that some doctors wouldn't recommend giving Melatonin to children, many doctors disagree as they will prescribe it for children if they feel that it is necessary. I have only reported my personal experience it is up to each person to make their own decisions.

Not as safe for everyone as believed

Be very wary of this product ! On a pharmacists recommendation in the USA I bought some Melatonin to help me sleep while there on holiday , I took it for 16 days over there plus another 7 when I returned home to help with the jetlag I always suffer badly with. Some 10 days after my return home I had an attack of amnesia which hospitalized me with a suspected stroke, I completely lost my memory for a few hours causing distress for my family. Everything gradually returned to normal again but I have no recollection of events that day, it was very frightening as I started to recover. On researching the problem I find Melatonin combined with trans-oceanic flight has been known to trigger Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) ........
If you do decide to take or are already taking it please tell someone, it could save a lot of heartache for yourself and nearest and dearest !

A natural product that works with your body to aid sleep and actually works!

Melatonin is a natural chemical produced in the brain and helps make people feel sleepy when its dark and wakeful when its light. It is available over the counter in the US as a remedy for sleeplessness and jet lag, but is only available by prescription in the UK.

I was prescribed Melatonin about two weeks ago, having been to my doctor on a fairly regular basis for the past two years about my lack of sleep. Basically I was not sleeping at night and then not catching up during the day so ended up getting around 3 hours sleep a day.

I have been given sleeping pills (Zopiclone usually) which gave me a sore head and left me feeling dizzy which to me was worse than the feeling of tiredness I had been used to, been told to try reading a book or doing a jigsaw to make me sleep - this just made me forget about sleeping altogether so when my GP suggested Melatonin I nodded and agreed to this whilst in the back of my mind feeling entirely skeptical that anything they were going to prescribe to me would make a difference.

It took two days after handing in my prescription for it to be ready for pick up- apparently most chemists do not keep it in stock so have to order it in. At around 9pm that night, after eating, I looked at the tablet with suspicion before swallowing it with some milk. To my great surprise, about an hour later I was feeling drowsy and ready for bed so into bed I jumped (it was more of a sit than a jump really!). Usually this is the part where I spend an hour trying to get comfy and get annoyed at myself for not sleeping but not that night. That night I lay on my bed, put my head onto the pillow and felt like I was in the comfiest, softest place in the world and drifted into a lovely gentle sleep - not the crashing thud I was used to with the sleeping pills. I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed and awake without the fuzzy head and bleary eyes I was used to with the sleeping tablets. I was completely shocked, I thought sleep like this was a myth!

Two weeks later and I have had no side effects from the tablets apart from eating less due to actually having the energy I need when I've woken up.

I must add that as well as taking these tablets I am going through Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in order to deal with the emotional reasons which affect sleep. I think this is really important for people who don't sleep due to stress or anxiety as the tablets can't change these things, they can just help the sleep itself - although since taking Mirtazapine I am feeling much better in every area of my life. What a difference a good nights sleep makes!

MELATONIN HELPS INDUCE A MORE NATURAL SLEEP

Melatonin is a natural hormone that is produced by the body especially increased at night time and is secreted in the brain. It is thought that some people have less melatonin and being prescribed melatonin that comes in various doses can help with the sleep patterns.

My son was prescribed melatonin years ago to help with his disturbed sleep patterns. He originally started on a small dose but presently takes four mgs of melatonin and three mgs of slow release melatonin that as it suggests releases the melatonin through the night. From the start of using melatonin there was a definite improvement to his sleep and usually within thirty or so minutes of taking the drug he becomes more relaxed.

Doesn't work throughout the day but works by taking in the evening when it is becoming darker. I tend to have the lights on dim as light will stimulate the brain and make taking the melatonin less effective.

We also use it to try help reduce my sons seizures as he gets less tired by having a better sleep though when having seizures or had seizures throughout the day I find it less likely to work and I can only think that it's because my son's day has started after sleeping off the seizure so genuinely no tired or sleepy.

Melatonin is available only on prescription in the uk and not in available to purchase from a pharmacy and doesn't leave that groggy feeling as natural. Used by many for varied sleep conditions or with varied special needs by children and adults. I have seen it advertised on the internet and believe it is available in some health food shops though I would strongly recommend anyone who wishes to use the drug to seek proper medical advice first from there GP or Health Specialist.

I know many children who take this medication and the parents wouldn't be without it as seems to relax the child without causs any unpleasant side effects. I'm aware that adults take this medication to for various conditions.

Melatonin is a natural hormone that works with the twentyfour hour body clock we have and people who do shift work use it or is also used for jet lag etc though I would recommend if you have sleep related issues maybe taking some advice from your GP before taking it.

For my son it works brilliantly and is effected.

              Good for short term use

I received melatonin on prescription because I have trouble regulating my sleep cycle. I frequently have trouble getting and staying asleep, and would happily sleep all day. I have also seen it being prescribed on the childrens ward, the only sleeping drug they gave to children there.
The dosage I was prescribed was 5mg, slightly more than the dosage in the advertised product which is only 4mg. I was advised to take it an hour or too before I wanted to go to sleep. It was explained to me that most of us have a peak in our natural melatonin levels around 9pm, but modern lifestyle disrupts that for most of us.
It worked really well in the short term. It induces a natural feeling of tiredness, not a drugged feeling and I found it easy to fall and stay asleep. I found it a much nicer experience than more conventional sleeping tablets as you wake up feeling refreshed with no drug hangover.
I took it for a couple of months before it started to lose effect. I would therefore recommend it for shorter term use such as jetlag rather than a longer term solution.
Getting out into naturasl light for some time every day is known to boost melatonin levels and can also help sleep.

                would use then again

Difficult one this, as I approach my fifties I am expiriencing some difficulty sleeping, but then this is not always a bad thing as I use the time to read. With an active toddler to chase after I sometimes find I am tired but still cannot sleep so I tried melatonin. After much deliberation over which size to buy, so many to choose from, I settled for the 3mg tablets and they do work however i don't want to take them all the time
