Advantages: Easy to swallow and after a few days' use my energy levels were significantly increased
Disadvantages: I felt as if I was buzzing and was unable to relax or sleep properly
Ever since becoming a Bzz Agent earlier this year I have been fortunate to be asked to participate in a large number of campaigns in return for me discussing the products with other people and providing details of my experiences and thoughts on the Bzz website. A few months ago I was sent an invitation to take part in a Pharmaton Active Life campaign; a newly launched product which I had never heard of before and I eagerly accepted the invite and awaited my package.
My product arrived a few days later, which was a cardboard box containing 30 caplets with information contained on the packaging stating that it has been scientifically proven that taking one of the capsules on a daily basis will gradually build and sustain energy levels. In order to open the box it was necessary for me to push down on the small perforated section to break the seal, so I had the assurance that the product hadn't been tampered with. The capsules were hygienically bubble packed in foil packaging and were easily dispensed by gently pushing and breaking the seal. The size of the fawn coloured capsules was a little alarming, particularly as they were huge and considerably larger than a paracetamol capsule. Consequently, I made a point of checking the information on the packaging to ensure that I would be inserting them into the correct place!
As I am prescribed a fair amount of medication due to various health problems I carefully scrutinised the packaging to ensure the capsules were suitable for me and the only information I could find was that they are not suitable for those people who are allergic to milk. In addition, in amongst the fairly length list of ingredients I discovered gelling agent, so the capsules would be unsuitable for vegetarians. I would also point out that you should seek medical advice prior to taking the capsules if you are pregnant, breast feeding or taking any blood thinning medication. Each of the capsules is packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals; the majority of which provide our daily recommended allowance. It would be impossible for me to list each and every one of them, particularly as the ingredients are fairly lengthy. In addition, each of the capsules contains 40mg of ginseng extract G115, which accordingly to the blurb on the reverse of the packaging is unique.
My initial impressions were good and I welcomed the opportunity of trying out this product, particularly as I frequently feel tired and more so after lunchtime, which is exacerbated by an underlying medical condition. As directed, I took one of the capsules with my breakfast and despite its rather large size, I found it easy to swallow due to its shape and smooth coating. There was no bitter after taste lingering in my mouth, which is often the case with certain vitamins. I continued to take one of the capsules on a daily basis with my breakfast and after a few days I felt that my energy levels were higher than usual. Whilst I initially put this down to coincidence rather than the capsules, my energy levels were gradually increasing and I was suffering no after lunch slump, which assisted me greatly, particularly during my working day.
Due to my increasing energy levels and improved well being I was certain that it was the capsules, as it was far too much of a coincidence to be due to anything else. However, I found that I was unable to relax in the evenings, as my body felt as if it was on a constant high and as a result, I found myself carrying out tasks around my home at ridiculous hours, as I simply could not sit down. Sleeping is an issue for me normally and as a result, I have been taking prescribed pills for the past 14 months. However, the Pharmaton capsules seemed to be counteracting the effects of my sleeping pills, which normally place me in the land of nod within approximately fifteen minutes of taking. I found myself tossing and turning for a good two hours despite taking a sleeping pill and I was waking up in the mornings feeling as if I'd been out nightclubbing until the early hours and it took a good hour for me to feel properly awake. I omitted taking my sleeping tablets for a couple of nights to see if I would feel more alive in the mornings, but unfortunately, this was not the case, as my head felt as if it was buzzing as well as my mind being totally active where I felt the need to get out of bed and do something useful.
In addition, I also suffered a few mild stomach upsets, which may have been totally unrelated, but after weighing up the pros and cons of taking the capsules, I had no alternative than to cease with them after three weeks. I am extremely sceptical about Pharmaton, as I experienced the same symptoms when I was taking Pro Plus several years ago when I was attending a University day release course, as I was desperate to stay wide awake to complete my assignments. I carried out a little research on the benefits of ginseng where I learned that it is used as an energy booster and as a result, I feel that the levels used in Pharmaton are far too high. One of the conditions with being a Bzz Agent is that I am required to speak with other people and discuss the product. Consequently, I handed out some money off coupons that accompanied my free box and a few of my work colleagues made a purchase and also reported similar symptoms and experiences after a few days of use.
I was shocked to learn of the £9.99 price tag for a box of 30 capsules, which is far too expensive. I would be tempted to try out the product again if they were to reduce the levels of ginseng, but the most I would pay is £4, so I cannot see me ever trying out Pharmaton again even if they introduced an improved version. Due to the reasons discussed above, I cannot make a recommendation and award just a one star rating. If you are interested in trying out Pharmaton, I would advise that they are available in most of the major supermarkets and Boots.
I hope you found my review useful and thanks for reading.
Summary: A newly launched energy booster, which unfortunately, has too many side effects
