Advantages: gives your baby a good start in life

Disadvantages: is no substitue for trying to eat healthily

I've read loads about what you should eat during pregnancy, 5 fruit and veg a day, carbohydrates, whole grains, lots of water, calcium, etc. Then there is the information about how these specific nutrients aid the baby's development, so you end up suspecting that if you don't get your whole quota of vitamins the baby?s growth is going to be stunted in some way.

However, it's quite hard to eat in such a superbly nutritious way especially in early pregnancy. I was lucky enough to just get mild feelings of nausea in the morning rather than the whole throwing up thing. But if you do get morning sickness it can be hard to eat the perfect pregnancy diet. I did get food aversions early on that to a certain extent have lasted the whole way through. Unfortunately a lot of these aversions involve fruit, some vegetable and pasta.

This is where pregna care vitamins have proved to be useful as a kind of safeguard just in case I'm missing out a bit on nutrition. From what I've read babys don?t suffer if you are slightly down on nutrients, because the developing foetus takes the nutrients it needs leaving you with what is left! So I think it's a good idea to make sure I and the baby were getting enough nutrients so I could withstand some of the physical demands of pregnancy. I started taking them when I found out I was pregnant. There are 16 different vitamins and minerals in the supplement with a combination that is specially designed for pregnancy.

Folic acid is probably the most important ingredient in there. It's a crucial nutrient in pregnancy that is needed for the baby's developing brain and nerves. Folic acid deficiency in pregnancy has been linked to neural tube deficiencies such as spina bifida. It's recommended that you begin taking this supplement whilst trying to conceive as its been shown that this may reduce the risk of spina bifida. Pregna care can be taken for the whole of pregnancy and you can
start to take it at any time during pregnancy. It's also useful to take if breastfeeding as this makes demands on your body that requires extra nutrients.

Pregna care can be purchased from all the big supermarkets, boots and chemists. It costs about 12.95 for 90 tablets and 4.95 for 30. You should take one a day after your main meal. They are no alternative to a healthy diet. I've had to remind myself of this when the urge to pig out has come upon me. I've had my moments with the chocolate and sweeties, but have reminded myself that taking vitamins doesn?t mean I can have a chocolate diet!

I found it practically impossible to eat healthily in the first three months cos I had horrible morning sickness (which lasted all day!) that meant I could only eat very dry foods - staple diet for me and baby was crisp sandwiches and dry toast...
