Having used all sorts of suppliments over the years, ive tried many different whey proteins. All promising fantastic gains.....some delivering on that promise. The rule of thumb above is generally the way to go....SEE MY REVIEW ON BODY FORTRESS WHEY PROTEIN
Reflex is one of those brands which I would say is mid to high in terms of cost and quality. Ive tried the All in One too 'One stop' and I have to say im impressed. Toward the end of a 10 week body building program I had started to top out at 13st. I started using this brand when others only seemed to keep me at that weight with the same level of workout. Reflex tiped me to 13st 3 when i was certain I could get no more out of it. But in order to do that I had to take the recommended 3 doses (of two scoops) @ 40grams each dose, thats 120 grams of protein and even with taking L-Glutimine to aid absorbsion I bet I was still only taking in 80grams max. So If I was a standard lifter as I am, reading this id stick to two doses of 40 grams max a day.
(obviously if your 17st this may not apply !)
I had choc mint flavour, mixes fairly well, tastes better with cold/warm milk, water doesnt hurt but its no where near as nice, better still mix water and milk, whey is a diaretic, so you`ll need to rehydrate. flavour smells lovely, taste after a week starts to seriously grate....think it was for the american 'sweetner' market !
INSIDER TIP- a friend of mine told me the reflex hq is in brighton for the UK. An area well known for its affinity for its love of Mixed Martial Arts. ZT fight club amongst others sometimes test and review their newer products. So I can say this company get their info stright fomr the horses mouth....no offence guys !!
I love strawberry flavour - mix it with some frozen summer fruits and whack it in a blender to make a fantastic shake. I've tried the mint choc version and didn't really like it that much, the taste was a bit intense for me - but each to their own I guess
I take it within 30mins of my workout as this is what most fitness research shows as the best time to take it (to repair those worn out muscles). The Reflex website states that this is the best selling whey protein in the UK, I doubt that there is much to differentiate across different brands, so if its the best for the majority I'll just take it thats a good point to follow.
I purchase mine from www.reflexinstantwheypowder.co.uk - it compares the prices of loads of stores across the internet - so I know I'm getting the cheapest deal :-)
A really nice tasting whey protein product. It is an 80% protein which basically means that for every 100grams, around 80grams is protein. It contains Digezyme enzymes and Lactospore pro-biotics which help with digestion. this is something that you don't find all the time in these products and a worthwhile addition.
I have used this product a couple of times in the past and really enjoyed it each time. The packaging really stands out with its black tub and its shiny reflective label. The tub lid just unsrews off and is very easy to open.
There is a good variety of flavours to choose from in this range. Banana, chocolate, choc mint, choc orange, raspberry, strawberry and vanilla. I tried 2 of the chocolate versions and found both of them to mix very well and probably the nicest flavour of all of the brands.
You can buy the product in 3 sizes. 909grams, 2.27kg, and 4.4kg. Although there are rrp for all of these, never buy them at this price as you will always got it cheaper somewhere. Infact i don't ever remember seeing it full price.
I have tried a number of different protein powders and thankfully this one does seem to have been a worthwhile purchase.
As with any supplement the product is only as good as the training that the purchaser does in order to allow the product to achieve its full potential. After a month of using Reflex Instant Whey Protein I am in the best shape of my life and I believe that this is partly down to using the best protein powder i have come across so far.
Perhaps my only problem with this particular product is that it is difficult to get the powder to mix with liquids unless you own a shaker (not provided). I tend to mix my powder with water as the power of the water flow helps the powder to mix and although it tastes slightly better with milk it is difficult to mix. 4 out of 5.
Reflex, one of the biggest names in body-building supplements brings us Instant Whey. If your unfamiliar with Whey its basically a form of protein, these awfully nice supplements company break it down into a power to be drunk before and after workouts, filled with extra amino acids and other goodies these protein "shakes" have become very popular in recent years, recognised as a quick and easy way to get a large amount of good quality protein down the hatch. Does Reflex deserve the title The King of Whey? In my honest opinion, they do.
In terms of taste, its certainly one of the nicest shakes I've tasted. I bought the Chocolate. When mixed with water its bareable, its not particularly nice, but then its not supposed to be. When mixed with milk, now that's a whole different story. It tastes exactly like chocolate milk would, I probably put in a tad too much milk as its not thick at all, but it tastes delicious. I actually look forward to my shakes they taste so good! Unlike some shakes their not gritty and the mixability is perfect. Apart from maybe the last mouthful I find that I can't take the power at all.
In terms of protein, it provides 19 grams per shake. I can't really comment on any gains I've got when using it. It seems just the same as any other Whey on the market, although no Whey I've had thus far has really shown significant gains over another.
Instant Whey isn't as cheap as some of the other makes out thee but its quality protein, which tastes great. Taste is a big thing when it comes to protein shakes. Its the difference between 2 shakes a day and growth, and a black tub that achieves nothing but taking up space in your kitchen cupboard. Don't let it become the latter and buy some Reflex.
Reflex is one of the best known supplement manufacturers in the UK and for a very good reason. Firstly being the quality of their whey protein is superb, i believe it is 80% protein of a dry basis of 100grams. So whilst it is a supplement it is also a food source at the same time, so great not only for athletes but for individuals who struggle to meet their GDA of protein, such as vegetarians or people with a diet low in meat produce.
Anyway, around to the review itself. Reflex instant whey comes in an array of flavours, I have tried banana before so shall comment on this. In my experience Banana is often the flavour that most manufacturers just can't get right, be it a milkshake flavouring or whey protein, 9 times out of 10 it tastes awfully artificial, however Reflex seem to have created a taste much closer to that of a real banana and not so sweet and sticky as most other brands. So for that reason i vote flavour 9/10.
As for the products mixibility, it dissolves in a small amount of water or milk (approx 300ml) quite easily and you are left with a liquid consistency that is easy to drink. So texture i rate 9/10 again.
As for price, it is very affordable, most branded whey proteins can charge upwards of £10 per lb however reflex instant whey can be picked up for around £6 per lb so massively cheaper.
Not only that but reflex also produce an economy range of whey protein at their sister company sports-nutrition.net so for that reason i rate value at 10/10.
Well I must admit I bought this protein purely based on the shiny tub. It was the first protein powder I ever purchased and it seemed a fairly good choice.
The powder mixes really reall and gives about 20g of protein per serving. A 5lb tub will give you 90 servings. For some reason the scoop it comes with is tiny and only scoops out a half serving. But I'm not going to rate this protein on the scoop it comes with.
The taste is acceptable (I had chocolate mint) and the texture is pretty good when used in a shaker. The product says it mixes easily with a spoon, but don't be fooled. Trying this results in a pretty horrible gloopy mess and a spoon clumped with powder. Use a shaker for this.
For some reason there is a horrible smell from the unmixed powder. It really is quite bad, and makes you not want to drink it. The smell seems to go away when its mixed. but its quite unpleasant to open the tub and smell what you are about to drink.
As for gains, I'm sure it helped me put on some mass and was the first protein shake I took. It wasn't good enough for me to buy again, but it wasn't bad enough that I never wanted to try protein shakes again.
Now first of all I am going to take a moment to say a little bit about me, it's my review so why shouldn't I? The first thing you should know dear reader is that I am not a bodybuilder or even that interested in putting on lots of muscle, though it is a nice side benefit to my training. I run, cycle, swim and do MMA plus some weight training that is appropriate to those sports. Therefore the following review will not be a rundown of how much my biceps have expanded, or indeed any part of my anatomy.
The second thing you should know is my stance on supplements in general. I have been training for many years now in various sports but only in the last couple of years have I started using protein powders. The reason for this is that when I was younger and living with the parents, food always seemed available and I had far less to do with my time (those were the days.) Therefore grilling myself some chicken or making up some tuna was what I would do. Fast forward a few years and money is a little tighter, and my free time is a little more valuable so protein became a useful alternative to making a post workout meal.
Over the couple of years I have been using protein I have used a number of products, the market is obviously booming and as a result there are hundreds of products available, each making outrageous claims and backing those claims up with equally outrageous statistics. I found the most important things to look at in a protein powder are: taste, mixability, value, and probably most important, how your body reacts to it. So these are the criteria on which I will rate my Reflex Instant Whey.
The flavour I chose was mint choc and I have to say it one of the best tasting drinks I have had, let alone protein. To be honest I would drink it if they sold it a milkshake. The flavour is refreshing, the mint cut through the chocolate perfectly, the best bit is that there is no aftertaste which I found to be a real problem in other supplements I have used in the past.
I tend to make my drink with semi skimmed milk in a shaker doodad and for the most part I end up with a smooth, thin milkshake type drink with all of the powder dissolved. Occasionally however, whether it due to the temperature of the milk, or the shaker having something in it, or because the moon is at the wrong point in the sky, the powder refuses to blend properly and I end up with small lumps which stick in the shaker and in my teeth and are really quite unpleasant. This is quite rare but I have not idea why it happens.
I buy my Reflex instant whey from the company website, it is slightly more expensive there than some other protein stores online but both times they have delivered the next day for free and do not try to sell you more stuff like some cheaper places do. I worked it out that a tub equates to around 40p a serving, which, if you compare to eating a tin of tuna or piece of chicken, is not that bad. As you can see on the nutritional information below, this powder is 80% protein which a good amount and means you can use a less, depending on your goals.
How your (or rather my) body reacts to it
The first thing I should say is that this protein has given me no problems in the old tummy department at all. This has been a problem with some supplements I have taken in the past (even the more expensive brands.) therefore it gets a big thumbs up from me (and my poor girlfriend!)
On a more savoury note and bearing in mind what I said before about my views on supplements, I have noticed gains in muscle but to be completely honest, and as said before I would get the same benefits from eating some fish/chicken after my weights session. However as a convenient, tasty alternative to this, Reflex instant whey is the best option I have found thus far, and the product I will be sticking with for the foreseeable future.

Whatever level of supplementation you are at, Instant Whey provides a perfect source of protein. Whether before or after your workout, or at any stage in the day, it gives you a great tasting almost unmatched source of protein.
