Sainsbury's Evening Primrose Oil Capsules
Advantages: Easy to swallow, are economical and I feel they help me!
Disadvantages: Won't help everyone!
A long time ago I started researching into taking a supplement of Evening Primrose Oil. I was about to hit 30 and after researching into it I did feel it would be beneficial to me so I have now taken it every day for about 6 years! I take it always and no matter what (apart from having a brief break which I will come on to later lol!)
Why Did I Start Taking It?
Well like I said I researched into taking different supplements before just simply taking them. My health at the time wasn't great and all that started me off on this was that one of my mates recommended it to me as a 'ladies' supplement and basically said it helped with 'women's' issues. Well me at the time had period problems, general cramps and stuff like that and that is why I started on the research into this in the first place lol. Looking into Evening Primrose a bit closer it is a bit more than what my mate suggested!
First off this flower has been used in a variety of ways since the 1930's and started it's helping with eczema and general skin conditions and allergies. It is also thought to be helpful with diabeties and cancer and rheumatoid condions and as my friend suggested it is thought to be helpful with probelms affecting women's health, such as breast pain associated with the menstrual cycle, menopausal symptoms, and premenstrual syndrome. Me, well I had at the time pre-menstral tension and suffered with itchy skin and even now suffer with skin allergies so this seemed a perfect addition to my medications I was already taking as it is safe for most people to take with no side effects at all as it is naturally sourced.
When I started looking at ways to incorporate this mighty bloom into my life there were/are numerous ways. You can pops capsules, bath in it, slap it on your skin, drink it you name it you can do it. A lot of the supplements I found at the time cost an arm and a leg until I found these and I have as I mentioned earlier took them every day and these work out very economical in my opinion.
Well first off you can buy these in a 30 capsule size (which costs 71p a tub) or in a 90 capsule tub for £1.95. The capsules I take are the one's I'm reviewing now which contain 500mg of Evening Primrose Oil but they are also available in a 1000mg dosage (also from Sainsbury's) and the only reason I don't take the higher dosage is because I find them far too big to swallow and so I take 500mg but of course I could simply take two of them if I desired to make the 1000mg up I reckon (though I don't!) lol.
Whatever size or dosage you buy the tubs all look the same. They are white with yellow plastic push and twist safety caps to the top of them and then the label around it is yellow and white in colour. On the front I'm told they are Sainsbury's Evening Primrose Oil 500mg 'Women's Health' and the size is stated (in my case it says 90 tablets which of course is 3 months supply for less than £2.00!). Other information on the back of the tub includes being told a bit about the product, what the capsules contain and ingredients are listed, warnings are given, and contact details for Sainsbury's are stated. It's a functional looking tub and gives plenty of information on it which I do approve of!
A Bit About The Product According To The Back Of The Tub:
Sainsbury's Evening Primrose Oil 500mg capsules contain GLA (Gamma Linolenic Acid), which plays an important role in helping to maintain hormone balance and healthy skin. Some women find this a useful supplement to take before and during their period.
Each Capsule Provides:
Vitamin E & Evening Primrose Oil.
Small, oval and translucent, oily looking and a light golden colour they are capsules and if you squeeze them them they feel like a thin skin containing liquid but they don't burst! (Well I haven't burst one yet lol) They are not very big and like I mentioned a while ago they are not as big in size as the 1000mg one's so I find these my best option and I simply take them whenever I remember to with a glass of water. They slide down the throat with ease and that's it job done. No repeating on me and no nasty after-taste either. They are so simple to take, they melt in your stomach (so no chewing these like sweeties) and you get on with your life!
Do They Work?:.
According to clinical tests and trials run on this type of product the results are ominous. There is no reported suggestion that they do much for anything and some people love them and swear by them, for other people they do nothing at all. Me.....well I think they do help with my health issues quite a bit. Like I say I took mine for a long time and it was when I stopped taking them I noticed that for me they did help particularly with my period problems. By taking these I feel like I'm less hormonal and more in control of my life and during that time of the month my cramps are not so bad as they were prior to taking them. When not taking them I was more irrational and a lot more in pain. I don't know if they help with skin problems and the illnesses I mentioned previously as I don't have those issues but I don't think it helps with my allergies (I'm currently sat here with a massive hayfever rash!).
These are not a miracle cure to illness and I don't feel that these are a short term fixer either. I took mine every day for a good couple of months before I started to feel any benefit and that was so slight I almost missed it but like I say when I stopped taking them I didn't feel so good I know that much so if interested in taking an Evening Primrose supplement......yes I recommend these. They are a great price and as good in the way of their composition as many leading brands for a rather small price tag!
Only available in Sainsbury's stores.
Summary: Worth a go for ravid biatches during period times maybe?
