      Very helpful

A decent washer dryer that does most of what it should

After a fair amount of internet based research I narrowed it down to a couple of models and managed to get the best deal on the AEG L14840 at just over £400 including delivery (and by the same supplier who got our fridge/freezer so only one delivery slot morning spent waiting required - bargain!). I think this was a good deal on the standard price for this model as in most places it seems to be about £500.

I'm afraid I can't comment on how easy this was. I had paid an extra £19.99 connection fee - being pretty useless at this kind of thing. However the hassle-free option proved anything but, when the delivery chap said he couldn't connect because one of the pipes was too short so might cause flooding. Not the best of starts! Seeing as there had been a washer dryer in exactly the same spot for years owned by the previous occupants, with no evidence of flooding, I was pretty sure this was an unlikely problem. Fortunately a good friend who's a builder was there at the time, checked out the plumbing and didn't seem to concerned either and he connected it for me. So I would say, if you're reasonably practically minded it shouldn't be a problem!

I've had no problems with quality of washing. There are several automatic cycles at temperatures ranging from 30 to 90 degrees for cottons/easy care/woollens, and separate rinse/spin cycles as you'd expect. There's no setting for the very cool washes at 15 degrees that some of the latest washing powders promote. You can also adjust the cycle time if you want a quicker wash, and there's a super quick option that comes in at around 30 minutes too - not sure how clean it gets your clothes though! It has 6kg capacity and 1400rpm spin.

I would say not perfect but not bad! Certainly much better than my previous experience of a combined washer dryer. With small loads there tends to be no problem at all, but you have to be very careful not to overfill the machine. Drying is sometimes uneven, particularly with bigger items like bedding, so I often find myself unloading at the end of the drying cycle and then putting a couple of items back in for an extra 20 minutes. Overall drying times are not bad. There is an autodry function where it automatically sets the drying time, but I often find this over-dries so tend to set the timer manually. It has 4kg drying capacity.

      Other features + controls:
There are other features including a delayed start and delayed spin to minimise creasing. Though to be honest I rarely use these extras (like a lot of people, I suspect). The wash/dry cycles are set by a simple dial. Other adjustments e.g. to set drying time, delay the start of the wash, are set by push buttons. The main controls are very clear. For the features I don't use much, the instruction manual covers everything, although it does have the annoying thing of referring to all the buttons by number rather than as they're labelled on the machine - so you have to go to the instructions page with the number key to work out which button they're talking about!

One niggle on the push-button front: the Start/Pause push-button is very easily pressed by accident. With the appliance just under the work surface I have accidentally paused my washing a couple of times without noticing as I chopped veg or made a cup of tea. Being a bit dozy I usually don't realise till an hour later that the washing hasn't progressed - very annoying!

      Energy efficiency:
The machine is rated energy efficiency C. This doesn't sound great, but in my investigations I discovered it's pretty standard for a combined washer dryer as they're generally less efficient, and the dryer element brings down the efficiency.

It can get a little noisy during a fast spin, but really not too bad, and the rest of the washing and drying cycles are fine. Our machine is housed in the kitchen, and while the flat isn't open plan, there is an open doorway into the rest of the flat, and travelling noise doesn't bother us. However, I wouldn't want to put a spin cycle on too late at night!

The look: It's a fairly standard white washer dryer - not very exciting but nothing offensive either.

Reliability: We've only had the machine for 4 months so it's really to early to comment, although no problems so far (fingers crossed!)

Overall, I would say I'm pretty pleased with this purchase. For a combined washer-dryer it seems to do both jobs pretty well - though not perfectly. Four stars may be a bit generous but three would be too mean!
