A great machine which has served us well

A few years ago we bought a brand new flat, already fitted with appliances including a washer/dryer machine.  The machine is a white Zanussi which has to date, touch wood, served us very well.

      The Washer/Dryer
Zanussi is a well known brand and the machine is very sturdy and well designed.  It's an average washer/dryer size at 85 x 60 x 54 and takes a load of up to 6kg.

As with all these machines there are always a number of settings one never uses, and over the time I have got to work out which settings work best for me. The settings I use are:

Full load at 30 degrees - good for colours and things which aren't too dirty
Full load at 40 degrees - whites which aren't too dirty and dirty coloured clothes
Full load at 60 degrees - whites which need a good wash
Half load at 30 degrees - things that need washing urgently but not enough washing of dark or light to make up a full load
Cold wash - wool and dry clean only clothes!
Dryer, cotton - anything that can go into a tumble dryer, and more

There are also eco washes but they take longer and I have never tried them and a 90 degrees wash which I have used only twice to rescue whites when all else has been tried and failed.

This washing machine is quite quick compared with others I have encountered.  A full load at 30 degrees takes 40 mins, going up as the temperature goes up to 1 hr 40 mins at 60 degrees.  The half load takes only 30 mins, which is really quick and handy if they kids get super dirty on a day out.  I do most of my washes at 30 or 40 degrees as these cycles are more economical on time and energy.

I use a good quality washing powder, usually Persil non-bio along with a Waitrose own brand softener and all our clothes come up really well.  I find that whites stay white even on a low setting and all clothes come out well spun and feeling and smelling really clean.  It seems to shift stains, mud, paint, ketchup, coffee etc. sometimes with a helping hand from Vanish and I have been surprised what stains have come out.  I am also really pleased with the cold setting as I have put two pure wool dry clean only winter coats through several times and a pair of dry clean only linen lined suit trousers and all came out absolutely fine.  It saved me quite a bit in dry cleaning!

The washing machine is easy to switch on, it has by straightforward settings on a dial for all the washing machine settings plus two tumble dryer settings - cotton and synthetics.  There is a button to put the timer on for the dryer, which goes up 5 mins per press plus two other buttons for prewash and extra spin options, which I have never used.  Really it's just a case of turning the dial to the temperature/load type you need and press the on button.

The drum and seal are easy to wipe down and the try for the powder and softener comes out so it can be washed.  I do find the tray needs regular washing in the skin otherwise the soap suds stick to the back of the tray in the form of manly looking brown stuff!

The only thing I find difficult to clean, or more precisely empty is the condensed water from the tumble dryer.  The "door" to the bung to empty the water is difficult to open, I use a blunt knife to open the "door". The spout to let the water out is so close to the floor it is difficult to get a vessel underneath to catch the water.  The only thing I have found to go under which successfully catches the water is a large silicon cake case!

      Safety and Noise
The only noisy part of the washing cycles are the spins, which is no noisier than an other washing machine.  The tumble dryer is quiet.  When the washing/dryer has finished it beeps several times, at intervals of about 10 seconds and you can't open the door until 2 mins after the beeps stop.  This is supposed to be a safety feature for children.

I believe this Zanussi washer dryer is at least £300 to buy, as it came with our flat I don't know how much ours cost.

      All in All
I have been very satisfied with the machine.  We've had it three years and it's still going strong despite quite heavy usage.  I really like the settings and that it's easy to use and am pleased with it, even though I didn't get to choose it!

      wouldnt recommend

Had several problems with this washer/dryer
1)It very often makes an electrical fault hissing noise and then burns out the fuse.
      2) On a few occasions it has not emptied properly
3)The dryer takes forever to dry the clothes and so we dont use this because of the amount of electricity it uses. Therefore there is no point to 50% of this machine.

      Good things about it:
1)The washer is quite easy to use, id say with a good range of variables. 2)Although the dryer is not so good, the spin on this machine is brilliant so that most clothes (not so much towels) are nearly dry anyway.
3)You can find this machine for around an average price of £400
      4)Its fairly quiet.

      Wash capacity 6kg
      Drying capacity 3kg
washing efficiency class A and energy class B
      1600 rpm
      Available in only white.

Would I recommend it? Not really, I will definately not be buying it again. Next time I will look at some reviews for a well recommended washer.
Consumers also be careful, as this washer seems on the large size so measure up before buying.
