We purchased this washing machine from John Lewis and had it delivered for £299. This seems a reasonable price for this product, there are some websites offering it cheaper but none that I have heard of and would be willing to use.
I tend to buy basic washing machine models as I do not find that I use the extra features on some and I also think that there is more to go wrong on fancy models!
This is a standard looking white, front-loading machine.
Size 60cm wide x 56 cm deepx 85cm high.
Energy Rating A
15 Wash Programmes
Washing capacity is 6kg on a cotton wash and 3kg on an easy-care wash.
There is one dial and three buttons (start, rinse plus and express wash) and the powder drawer on the front top fascia.
---Using The Machine---
The clear door has an easy to pull handle which makes the door opening simple. The door is not overly large but the machine is easy to load. The smallish door may be of benefit in a narrow kitchen or if in an awkward to reach position. After loading the clothes in the drum the door shuts with a reassuring sound and the machine feels quite solidly built.
The detergent drawer is of a basic design, pretty much identical to any machine that I have had before, it is easy to remove and reinstate for cleaning.
To start the machine you select a programme and the "Wash" button flashes, this stays on permanently when you press the "Start" button.
Programme selection looks quite straight-forward, you simply turn the dial to the programme you require. However the dial doesn't have a positive feel when you reach a programme. The 30 and 90 washes are next to each other and I think it would be very simple to select the wrong one as the positioning of the dial for these programmes seems a little ambiguous to me. Obviously getting these mixed up could result in ruined washing.
I did not think that the machine was particularly noisy during the washing cycle. My machine sits in a utility room so the door is usually closed which would stop some of the noise. My last machine was certainly a lot louder but that may have been because it was about to break! The spin cycle didn't sound at all laboured.
I was amazed to find how long the wash cycles were on this machine. Obviously I have been using washing machines for years and although I read the first bit of the instruction book I didn't bother reading anymore once I get to the part that says "sort load". It was only after I felt that the cycle was going on forever did I bother looking at the booklet. The 40 cotton wash takes 110 minutes and 60 takes 125 minutes. My previous machine only took just over an hour for these wash cycles. Two hours for a wash seems a long time to me, I don't know if all new machines take this long but I wish I had looked into it before I purchased it. The energy rating is good but with the amount of washing we seem to generate in this house I think it will be permanently on!
There is an Express wash button which says that it will shorten the cycle but I haven't been able to work out by how much as I keep forgetting to time it, I also worry that it may not get the washing as clean as the ordinary wash and with a 12yr old boy in the house I have plenty of really dirty washing from outside play!
It took me a little while to notice that the machine had finished as there is no "End" light, you tell it has finished by the "Spin" light flashing rather than being constant. This struck me as being a little odd.
After the cycle eventually finished I was glad to find that the spin cycle had been very good. The clothes came out feeling quite dry (Cottons cycle), I did however wash something on the delicates cycle and that came out dripping as it does not spin at all which I hadn't realised when I used it.
There is a Rinse Plus button which I think is probably of benefit to families where someone suffers from allergies to washing products. I cannot see me having any need for this function so cannot comment on it.
The washing certainly came out nice and clean and not too creased, this is obviously the most important factor and this machine did not disappoint.
Overall I am happy with this machine as it seems to give a good wash and an effective spin. I think you do have to be careful with the selection dial and that is probably its major drawback. I find the idea of flashing and solid lights a little strange too but it doesn't have a great impact on me. For the price this feels like a good quality machine and does exactly what it should!
