      Tips on buying washing machines

      I have been through the experience of buying two Washing machines and with these two I think I have gained some tips on how to choose and buy them. I was also around snooping when friends were buying them.

      ***The look***

      Sounds silly when you have so many technical details when it comes to washing machines but I do think look is still one of the most important aspects, especially if you will keep your machine in a visible place. There is nothing worse than hating what you bought (for a long period of time), if the machine totally breaks you will probably buy a new one but if it is just plain ugly and works well you will have to look at it for ages. Choose something you are comfortable with even if that means paying a bit more. I think this is the first steep you have to do when buying it, browse through them and find a selection of ones you like.

      ***The price***

      Always buy something in your price range (logically), also keep in mind what you need the machine for. We were buying a machine for one of our rented (uni) apartments so logically we bought the cheapest one possible, it was totally rubbish but for the time we were needing it (2 years) it was more than perfect. Keep in mind that high prices do not guarantee high quality. Do a list of the ones that you can afford and do more investigation on the models. Thankfully sites such as Dooyoo will be more than helpful to provide you with information needed to help you decide.

      ***Costumer service***

      Another thing you should check before buying, it will do you no good if you have an amazing looking pricey washing machine and there is no one to help you if it breaks down. Check if there are any local repair services for the brand. Getting a spare part for a brand that is not local, or God forbid not national can be a real pain.

      ***Energy use***

      Since we are both economical and eco friendly a washing machine that uses less energy is more than desired, check the label and although the more economical washing machines can be pricier the money saved on electricity will soon make it even or even give you profit.

      ***Technical details***

      If you are not a tech person find someone that can assist you here, preferably someone who can operate a washing machine not just be a smart mouth to help you determine what kind of washing machine you actually use, it is logical that a single person needs less washing capacities than a family with 4 children.

      ***Use the salesman***

      There is a chance that the salesman is a honest person not just wanting to persuade you to just buy anything (or something he/she gets more profit from) so there is no harm in getting information from them, ask which washing machines get sold the most or if people have complained with some...

      ***The shopping act***

      If you have a wife/husband that has nothing to do with laundry leave him/her at home. Nothing more annoying when someone who knows nothing about these things tries to persuade you what is the best for you :).

        Whilst I am waiting for Dooyoo to add my new washing machine to the database, I thought I would share with you my tips of things to consider before committing yourself to a new machine. I hope the review will be useful!

        1. So you are in the market for a new washing machine! This is a major purchase so you will want to make sure you get the model that is right for you. Before buying spend time looking at what others have to say on sites like this one and ciao.
        2. Make a list of the features you will really need. It is too easy to be persuaded by an enthusiastic salesperson to buy a machine with lots of great features and programmes you will never use. I decided I wanted a machine that included a hand wash and wool programme. These were the 2 programmes I was not prepared to compromise on.
        3. Check how much the machine will cost to run. Washing machines are given a grade from A-E with A being the best for both energy and water efficiency and wash performance. I can’t imagine who buys those grade E models!
        4. Decide what spin speed you need. I think it is really useful to have a machine with both fast and slower spin speeds. Slow spin speeds are essential for delicate fabrics whilst faster spin speeds get rid of more water and allow your clothes to dry more quickly.
        5. Wash times can vary enormously between different models and this is worth checking. There are machines available with quick wash and economy programmes.
        6. Most complaints I hear about are concerning customer service and most importantly after care. If your machine goes wrong you will want the manufacturer to sort it out quickly and efficiently. The quality of customer service is for me really important. The only way you can have any idea of what this will be like is to read reviews .I also phoned the manufactures help line prior to purchase. This may give you some idea of what to expect!
        7. Check the dimensions of your planned purchase! This is pretty obvious really but worth mentioning. Although most washing machines are a standard size we have slightly lower worktops than standard and so getting a washing machine to fit under the worktop can be a bit tricky!
        8. Noise levels are also given a rating. My old machine sounded like a jet whenever it went into a spin, this time I checked that my chosen model would spin quietly!
        9. Finally when you have found the machine you want to buy spend time price checking. I not only use sites like pricerunner and kelkoo but also look on the high street. Many retailers will price match now so if you like a particular retailers after sales record but they are more expensive-negotiate! It often works, as many are desperate for business.

        I am really pleased with my new machine and will review it in full as soon as Dooyoo adds it to the database !.

          I recently bought a Zanussi washing machine in October 2001 and Its great. It is an FJS1225W Zanussi Jetsystem 1200 washing machine. It is so amazing, the clothes come out really clean thanks to a A rated wash performance and the Jetsystem wash system which showers water onto the clothes through a pump. The water cascades onto the clothes from a jet at the top and gets them really clean. It has electronic controls to make it advanced but simple to use. All you do is select the Fabric type e.g cottons, synthetics, delicates, wools etc and then set the temperature and spin speed ranging from 500-1200. Then select any options Prewash or super rinse and press the green start button. Its so easy to use its unbelieveable. It has a delay start ranging from 1-24 hours and LED display so you can see how long the wash will take. The only thing I can fault the machine on is the wash times for example for a cotton 60 degrees wash cycle it takes 2hrs 8mins but it is worth the time considering you are getting really clean clothes. What I like about it is you can pause the wash cycle and open the door if safe to do so and add any clothes you have forgotten. An the door unlocks straight away as soon as the wash cycle has completed. No more waiting 2-3 minutes for the the door the open. Also it uses cold water only so its cheaper and it gets an A Energy efficiency. I would definately recommend the Zanussi FJS1225W Jetsystem washing machine because it has A Energy Efficiency A Wash Performance and B Spin Performance. Also because it uses 44 litres of water for a typical cotton 60 wash. It uses 0.95kwh of Electricity and is 57db really quiet when it is washing.

            I rue the day I decided to buy a Whirpool washing machine. I was tempted by a £40 cashback offer, the "A" energy rating and the fact that the machine was supposed to be very simple to use. Which it is, when it is actually working! There are four of us in our house, including two small children, so I do at least one wash everyday. I also use washable nappies, so I rely on the machine to be working so that I don't have to pay for disposable nappies. The problems started when the machine was five months old. When turning on the machine one evening, the digital display went blank. I called customer services the next day, an engineer came out two days later and I was told that it needed a new timer and the part would take about a week to arrive. A week later, I had heard nothing, so I called customer services. The part still wasn't in stock. Another week passed - still no part. So began four months of complete frustration and annoyance. I would call once a week to either be told that the parts were still in Italy, or that they *had* got some in stock, but they had all gone to other customers. I wonder if they had waited four months as well? Eventually, after twice-weekly launderette trips and a lot of handwashing in between, my ancient tumble drier broke down. We went to the shop where we had bought the washing machine, a small local shop who actually care about their customers. When we mentioned the fiasco with the washing machine, they were horrified. Within the week, I had a replacement washing machine in my house. Not through Whirpool, though. This was from their own stock. Ironically, a few days later, I received a letter from Whirlpool informing me that the part was now in stock and they would be visiting in a few days' time to install it. I called customer services to tell them that I no longer needed a service visit and that I needed to transfer my guarantee over to a new machine. I ha
            d paid around £30 for a one year, free service contract. The machine came with a free 10 year parts guarantee. I was told that they didn't transfer guarantees over from one machine to another and that I would have to pay for another guarantee. I pointed out that it ws scarcely my choice to have a secod machine withing the space of nine months! They finally agreed, and I was sent a new guarantee. More on this later! In all that time I didn't receive a single apology from anyone at Whirpool about the delay and inconvenience caused. And at least that would have made it more beaerable, instead of being treated like a nuisance because - surprise, surprise - I wanted a washing machine that actually worked! Nearly two years later, it broke down again. I called Whirlpool with my guarantee details (the free service had expired, but I still had the parts guarantee) and was told that it wasn't on their system. Several phone calls later to different departments, I discovered that the guarantee had been printed with the wrong contract number, hence it not being on their system. That was three weeks ago and I am still waiting for a new contract to be sent to me. I have reminded them twice already! Fortunately, the parts only took two weeks to arrive and the engineers called round yesterday to repair the machine. I loaded it up when they had left and it didn't work - the drum wouldn't spin round. The parts they had replaced? The motor and the drum. So, I called customer services, who spoke to the engineer. His reply? "Well, it was working fine when we left." Meaning, I suppose, that I had somehow damaged it by setting it to do a normal wash. The fact is, they did a quick rinse cycle and didn't even reinstall the machine properly because they claimed the dranage pipe outside my house was blocked and they couldn't get the washing machine pipe through. I dismantled it and found that it wasn&#
            39;t blocked at all. I now have to wait until tomorrow for him to return (anytime between 8am and 5pm, so stuck indoors with two children all day- great fun!) because he is to busy. When I asked why another enginner couldn't come out, I was told "How would you like it if we rang you and said we couldn't come to you because someone else wants their machine repaired?"!! I am thoroughly fed up with Whirpool. If I won the Lottery tomorrw I would go out and buy another machine like a shot. As it stands, I cannot afford to do anything but put up with the shabby treatment and complete lack of courtesy they provide. All I can do is to advise anyone considering buying a Whirpool product - don't do it!

              Extraordinary. I bought a rather expensive Whirlpool oven. It came with an instruction manual. This included descriptions of various functions which were described in a completely cryptic and contradictory manner. So I telephoned Whirlpool customer services. I asked what, the various functions did. For example, the "pastry function" was described as "static plus fan". Static was described as "no fan". What on earth? The person read the instruction booklet to me. I replied that I was an averagely intelligent human being who could read an instruction manual all by himself, and I wanted to know what was meant by "static plus fan". "Oh, that's probably......." came the reply. I explained that I was a very keen cook and I wanted to know what the oven DID. I could work out the "probably" and the "perhaps", and the person's opinion of what they thought it "probably" did was very welcome. However, I had telephoned the compnay to speak to someone who knew the product and find out exactly WHAT it did, not what someone with no knowledge of the oven thought that it PROBABLY did. So I got transferred - the first of many transferrings. I finally spoke to someone who admitted he had no idea of what the oven actually did in terms of the functions, such as pastry and the difference between turbo-grill and fan. He was also keen to offer me his suppositions and guesses. When I informed him that I wanted to know what the oven was actually doing, he told to me to stick a couple of meat pies into the oven and see how they turned out. He told me I would have to do this as there was no-one at Whirlpool who knew what the various functions were. If I wanted an explanation of what the functions were, he said that I would have to telephone the manufacturers in Italy. If I spoke Italian, that is. Oh,
              the Whirlpool delivery service is a whole other story. I'll do a review of that one when my gas hob finally arrives. It's only ten days late so far. - Bernie

                When our trusty Hotpoint washing machine died after almost 10 years of service, we were faced with a rather daunting range of choices for a replacement. We relied a lot on personal recommendation of friends and opinions here at DooYoo. we also looked carefully over the specifications of the alternatives to make an informed decision. The purpose of this essay is simply to explain the considerations we took into account when making our decision. The point is that the technology had changed a lot since our previous purchase, and we wanted to know what features we had to consider, what the options were, even before thinking about brands and models. Wash time: For us, this was extremely important. Many modern machines improve their energy efficiency rating by washing for longer at lower temperatures. Since we often cram our family of five's washing into a single day, the longer washing times reduce our throughput. If you're better organized, then this may not be as much of a problem. Also, many washing machines have some sort of "reduced wash" button that will be faster and use less water and that are fine for lightly soiled clothes such as shirts that may have been for a day at the office. Water capacity: The less water the machine uses the better for us, because we're on a water meter, and the better environmentally too. The differences can be fairly substantial. Timer: Again, this depends on your needs, but our electricity tariff gives cheaper prices midnight-7 a.m., so we want to be able to set the washing machine to work in that period whenever possible. For us it was, therefore, essential to have a machine that allowed us to set the start or end time, or a delay period. In the old days, you could plug a washing machine into a timer, and it would start when the timer let the electricity through. That's no longer true. Many home appliances (including ovens and dishwashers) require YOU to push
                a button or something before they'll start functioning. It is very irritating and one reason we ended paying a fortune for a top-of-the line Bosch washer. Spin speed: The faster the spin, the more water is extracted from the clothes. That means they'll dry faster, whether in a dryer or in the air. We plumped for a high speed of 1600, but note that many of the wash programs -- including the one we use the most -- don't operate at that speed because the force it generates may damage some fabrics. This sort of detail isn't usually pointed out in the sales literature, you need the operating manual for that. Irritating buzzer or horrible chime: Essential if you want to know when the wash is finished. Has to be loud enough to cover the sound of arguing children, rock music or blaring television programs with canned laughter. We don't need it for overnight washes, but for those one-after-another all-day-Sunday times, it's an absolute necessity. In any case, it should be possible to turn the noise off if you don't want it. Clever ideas: Our Bosch's timer works by letting you say when you want the wash to end. So you need to be able to set the time, otherwise how would it know when to start. One of the nicest touches is a quick menu switch to change between GMT and BST. It's not too fiddly to change the time twice a year, but this is a neat touch. Price: You've probably already identified this as a consideration.

                  Lovely clean clothes fresh from the machine! Having washed your dark coloured socks and undies at forty degrees you would be forgiven for thinking that they are as clean as they smell. Well probably not. Forty degrees is only slightly warmer than blood 36-38 degrees and is a good temperature at which to grow germs. I recently pinched a pair of my Mum's socks from the drawer (sorry Mum!). My Mum suffers rather badly from foot rot (athlete's foot). She is very careful about sharing towels when she has this itchy condition and would never dream of putting on another person's sock for fear of them catching it and having to spend a fortune on antifungal treatments. A few days later I was washing my feet and noticed the tell tale scaly red patches appearing between my toes. Fortunately a chiropodist friend of mine immediately gave me some cream which nipped the problem in the bud. Nasty shock though to get something like that from a pair of clean socks. Tests done on people's washing machines have indeed revealed that, probably due to all the low temperature washing that goes on nowadays, they contain a lot of potentially harmful bacteria. Washing powder is not renowned for its bacteria killing ability. It's not just socks and undies is it? How many people do you know who wash and reuse their floor cloths, possibly in the same load as the dishcloth and the dusters, together with the half a pair of knickers that they wipe the loo with? Imagine all the germs from all those places ending up on your skirts and intimate garments on the next wash. Many of us have infectious skin diseases like my Mum's foot rot at some time or other. Impetigo is quite common and highly contagious as is ringworm (always popular with cats and children alike). Wouldn't it be awful if your trusted washer became a source of disease? So if, like me you use a washing machine make sure that you put a hot wash on now an
                  d then to keep the germs at bay. Don't wash linen which might be infected (eg, clothing and towels if you have a skin comlaint, dirty nappies or soiled dog blankets) along with with the undies of healthy members of the family. Rinsing your machine through with half a cup of bleach and an empty drum will also kill any germs that might be lying around. Don't wash loo cloths, floor cloths and dishrags. Throw them and their germs away and use a fresh one on a weekly basis for dishes and on a single use basis for loos and floors. Remember, everything is out to get you.

                    A while ago, we purchased a new washing machine and dishwasher made by Whirlpool. We decided to take out a 10-year parts guarantee with them and when we purchased them from Comet we took out a 5-year labour guarantee. We have had a number of fairly minor faults over time where we have had to have engineers out to fix the fault and had never had a problem until the last time. Lets give you a bit of history first that will explain why I am so frustrated, A short while ago we had a burst water pipe in our kitchen, when the plumber was moving the washing machine to get to the pipe, he ripped the lino, he explained that as the lino was wet it ripped easily, but not to worry as the household insurance would cover it. On this occasion as there was water everywhere I had no problems calling my household insurers and they had no problems in covering the cost of repairs. So here I am with my gleaming new kitchen floor when the washing machine goes wrong again. No problem I thought just phone Whirlpool they will come and sort it out. I phoned up and booked the appointment and the Whirlpool engineer turned up on the day he was supposed to. We explained to him that we had just had a new floor and could he put something under the washing machine before he moved it so he didn?t damage the floor and then left him to it. When he shouted to say he had finished, I checked the machine was working and then said goodbye. I then went back into the kitchen and picked up the wet towels he had left on the floor (I assumed to soak up the water that had come out of the machine while he was fixing it) only to find a large rip in my nice new lino. So I got on to the phone to Whirlpool Customer Services and spoke to someone giving them all the details, She said ?that is our senior engineer for the area I am sure he didn?t know he had damaged the floor otherwise he would have said something?, they then put me on hold while they called the engineer
                    . Apparently the engineer denied he had caused any damage to our floor. I suggested they get the engineer to come back so I could show him the damage as it certainly was not there when he arrived, the operator said he was on his way to another job so he couldn?t. Even though the engineer had said he didn?t do it the operator said to get 2 quotes for replacing the floor and to post it into them with a letter detailing what happened. So after ringing round lots of companies and several visits and even having to pay a £30 charge for producing insurance quotes, I posted off my letter along with 2 quotes. Just over a week later I get a letter back saying they had spoken to the engineer who denied he had caused any damage (I have heard this before somewhere) so they were not going to fix my floor. I was obviously upset by this so I tried to speak to the person who had written the letter, but after a number of phone calls and emails I had still not managed to speak to the lady dealing with my claim, or with the customer service manager as they were never available and I left a message every time I called they were never returned. When I did eventually speak to the Customer Service Manager he basically said tough, they are disputing liability in this case and there is no place for an appeal or complaint in the company. I am now in the situation where I am going to have to go back to my household insurers again to repair a floor damaged by a Whirlpool engineer. The reason for writing this opinion is to warn any potential purchasers of Whirlpool and the other makes they look after including Bauknecht and Ignis equipment. The Customer Service Department appear to have no idea of the concept of Customer Care. I phoned to report the problem, they had already decided that it was not there fault, but they made me go out and waste time getting quotes anyway. No concept of the customer is always right; their Engineer sa
                    id he didn?t do it so basically tough on the poor customer. No one returned my calls or emails; I had to keep phoning over several days before I got to speak to someone. Then the attitude was basically tough. I do not have a problem with either appliance, but the after care service is absolutely dreadful. I will certainly never buy a Whirlpool appliance again, neither will any of my friends after I explained this story to them, and I advise you to look for another manufacturer as well

                      Last Christmas, after seventeen faithful years, our washing machine (a Hoover 1100)finally died; it's electronic switching gear had fizzled out and failed to start up the spin-process. We were told it would cost at least £100 to fit a new electronic-pack, so it was clear that a new machine would have to go on the Christmas-list. We eventually settled on another Hoover and were encouraged to take out all the usual "extra cover and extended guarantees" ...which we always refuse to do and did so again on this occasion. It was with some amazement that we were told we would be lucky if our machine got through it's first year without needing repairs; and even luckier if it was still working after a further five years. "People don't expect any more than 3 to 5 years" said the sales-man, "they just bin it and get a new one." Now, I took note of the fact that 17 years ago we paid around £200 for our old machine; and now we were paying just over £300. Not much difference in price; but when you consider that the first one lasted 17 years and the next is likely to fail within 5, that makes the new one darned expensive on a monthly basis. £200 over 17 years is about £12 per annum, or £1 per month; £450 over 5 years is £90 per annum and £7+ per month. Therefore, you've got to save 7 to 8 times as much money, in order to replace your machine; and have your wages gone up seven-fold in the last 17 years? I doubt it. So when you ask yourself are you getting a good deal on your washing machine purchase, the answer is really no. They don't build them like they used to, and we are all paying through the nose for the convenience of a throw-away society; which, strange to say, is what the majority actually want, rather than quality. As for our new Hoover, well we've had it about seven months now and it is going fine; so let's pray for many more years like it, because at the
                      moment I ain't got another £300 to spend on a new one! It's easy to operate. hasn't got too many complicated settings and operates in general just like the old one; the simplest things are always the best.

                        Due to a stupid kitchen designer, the space in our kitchen for a washing machine was just under 60cm width. Now I am sure you know most washing machines are made to be 60cm. So I was very fortunate to find the CREDA 1200 washer dryer that was around 595. It doesn't sound much but trust me, in our case it made all the difference. Weve only had it for a year but it is doing a marvelous job. 10lb for washing and 5 lb for drying. And if you stick to those basic rules and don't overload it, it should be OK. Washer/dryers are much more likely to break down, but the convience, specially for people living in flats with smaller kitchen areas outways this. So the washing machine cleans clothes and does a good job, not to many silly buttons to confuse me. I'm happy chappy UNTIL UPDATE MY DRYER DIED A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE GUARANTEE WENT I HAVE PHONED CREDA ITS TAKEN THREE WEEKS TO GET AN ENGINEER IN WHICH TIME THE BLASTED WASHING MACHINE IS NOW LEAKING AND IS UNUSUABLE LETS SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE ENGINEER COMES LATEST UPDATE Well they came, fixed the problem and my washing machine is fine once more. Interesting to note that the HOTPOINT parts are the same as CREDA the only difference is the carcas of the unit. (If you do buy this machine, put on economy mode when washing wools or your jumpers will get mucked up, economy off means additional heat) Charlie

                        I purchased star trek:voyager elite force as soon as it came out and the first thing i noticed was the speed it took nearly 2 minutes to load and all of the setting were wrong so i had to change them wich took a considerable time after that when i fianlly got in the game i noticed it was excellent the borg looked like they should and the main characters from the show where in it but i had yet anouther wait when i changed levels. overall this is a great game if you have a very fast processor and a decent graphics card like the geoforce.

                          We bought the above washing machine 7 years ago and with it we bought 3 years warrantee. In those 3 years we needed 3 call outs, all were fairly minor faults. In the past 4 years nothing has gone wrong with it.(touch wood). I do on average 3 washes a day and one of those is a boil. I have really been lucky with this machine. I have 'forced' it on to spin only, stopped it and restarted it when I forget to put a garment in it, and it still hasnt let me down!. Whats the odds that when it does eventually 'die', I bet I cant find another one!

                          We have had our Indesit WDG1095W Washer / Dryer for about a year now and we cannot believe how slow this washing machine is. Although it does clean the clothes well, every wash cycle is so long, that it is beginning to drive us mad. When we use the “White Cotton” wash it takes over two and a half hours to complete the whole wash; and this is without using the dryer function! We have given up using the dryer completely. When we did use the dryer, the loads had to be so small, and take so long that the cost of electricity for any load to dry is ridiculous expensive. We bought our machine from the Tempo store in Nottingham and we were not mislead at all. There are a good variety of washes available with the machine and everything works fine. The machine looks very nice and was easy to fit into place. The Tempo store delivered the machine for us and it arrived exactly when we were told, so top marks for the store, but a mention of the cycle time would have got them the gold star from us. The washer cost about £275, so it is not expensive, as far as washing machines go, but I think soon we may have to change it, as every weekend we seem to have the washer working almost permanently throughout both days in order to get everything washed for the following week. I would not recommend this machine to anyone unless they have a lot of time to spare.

                          We have had our Philips Whirlpool 800 washing machine for approx. 9 years.It was originally on the radio rentals rent and buy scheme, which I think they still do. The advantage is that while it is still being "rented", so to speak, any problems are sorted out free of charge. Then when the rental period is up, you have purchased it. I must say though that it has been a good buy, it has let us down a few times over thoe years, but nothing serious-touch wood. The only thing that i not perfect at the moment is the spinner, which does not dry the washing enough, before being put out to dry. The programmes are easy to use-they must be for me to use it-and the drum is quite large, and it is not that noisy considering the age. It has been used for the washing for a family of five, so it's had a lot of wear and tear.
