As an ex appliance engineer, i'd like to give you a bit of advice that you made find useful.

The range of new washers can be bewildering, prices are lower than ever now and the kind of features are mind boggling.

But remember what you need. You need something to wash your clothes, something reliable, not an all action entertainment centre. The latest technology may seem appealing in the showroom but your opinion may change when the day before you fly out to sunny apain your washer obstinately refuses to wash.

Simplicity is always an advantage. Robust build and good design are important.

Look for a high spin speed, an 800rpm spin is too slow, if you are using a tumble dryer it will take far less time if you opt for a 1200 spin. You should go for a 1000rpm at the very least.

The most useful funtions to look for are half load programmes,and variable temparature settings.

Don't be tempted to plump for the cheapest on display. The best brands to aim for are those that fall midway in the price range.

Look for Zanussi in particular. These are brilliantly designed very reliable good looking washers. Don't go for the high spec models. Keep it simple.

Hotpoint and Hoover are the old standards, but despite the funky facelift they are prone to a surfeit of problems. Stay away. 10 years ago these washers were worth every penny, but now build quality has deteriorated badly.

They are all mouth and no trousers. Stay away.

Another excellent brand is Bosch, you could spend a small fortune on the premium models, but go for the basic model and you'll be a winner. Reliability is the byword for Bosch.

Once you've bought your new washer LOOK AFTER IT. The majority of breakdowns are caused by human error. Overloading, leaving pockets full of tissues and loose change. Running the washer on an uneven surface. Trying to wrench the door open when the safety lock is still o
n. If you are guilty of any of these crimes, knock it off now.

Treat your washer well, and you'll get better service in return. Attend to maintenance regularly. Washers are like cars, they need a little bit of loving care.
