Advantages: Easy to use

Disadvantages: Noisy, gets even noisier, breaks in a bad way

The Hoover TV30 drier came with our new (rented) flat, and it was the first time we've ever had our own tumble drier. So, all was well for the first year.

The drier does a good job of getting clothes dry, it's a great convenience, and we were glad to have it. The clothes come out still smelling fairly fresh, and the drier is easy to use -- turn the dial, push the button, done.

On the down side, it doesn't have any extra-special features, it's not exactly pretty to look at, and the filter seems to require emptying often (although as this is our first drier I don't have any basis for comparison, but it filled up in just over a week in a house of 3 people).

Oh, and it's noisy. Not unbearable, but even with the cupboard door closed you could still hear it upstairs.

Anyway, about a month ago it started to make very loud metallic scraping noises. VERY loud! These were intermitent at first, but eventually the noise was almost constant. Unfortunately, out landlord was not contactable at the time, so we waited for a couple of weeks. We should have got it looked at sooner, I know, but still...

A couple of weeks ago, it was in the middle of a load when it stopped making any noise at all. I quickly looked inside, and the back-plate of the drum had actually come off completely! In the process of doing so, the middle of the plate had got chewed up, along with about 10 items of my clothes!

I was very lucky I guess, becuase most of the items were pants and socks, so I 'only' really lost one t-shirt and a towel.

Very disappointed with the machine, because even when something breaks down, you don't expect it to tear big holes in itself. I mean, really. It does look like this one is a fairly old model, but the next tumble dryer we get isn't going to be a Hoover...

Summary: An average tumble drier when it works, a nightmare when it breaks
