Advantages: Reputable name, Choice of colours
Disadvantages: Expensive, Too many options for most households to use
Gone are the days of clinical white household appliances that show up every dirty mark and stand out like vicar in a psychedelic boudoir. Here comes style with the usual features that Hotpoint are renowned for. The WM33 comes in 3 colours, white, beige and silver (well ok, not bright colours but it’s getting there). So you can now make a fashion statement of your washing machine. The buttons and knobs look pretty technical and have options such as ‘rinse’, ‘rinse hold’ and ‘one’ (for washing one item only, which can be handy for last minute clothing dilemmas). The one thing I had difficulty finding was the economy button, until I read the instructions (“daft cow”, you say) and then found out that the washing machine will monitor how much you load up and alter the water amount accordingly (shame it doesn’t iron as well!). It also comes with temperature and spin speed adjustment knobs. I’m still trying to fathom out when there are so many programs to choose from. At a rrp of £429 it is pretty hefty, but does do a good wash, and the spin facility (with a maximum spin speed of 1300) drains clothes more than I’ve seen any other washing machine do. The main disadvantage with a non-white appliances is that it might be more difficult to match into new kitchen revamps and that colours can go out of ‘fashion’ and look old before their time very quickly. But hey, it’s only a washing machine we’re talking about!

- 25/06/01 Silver sounds funky. I must admit I'm easily swayed by those more important features such as colour! |
