Advantages: Large load capacaity, Washes well
Disadvantages: Length of some of the cycles, Pricey
I purchased this model of LG washing machine two years ago from Comet taking out the extended warranty ? something I don?t normally do but as we were moving house I didn?t want to take any risks. This model was to replace an old Hotpoint which I had had for 12 years and had given me good service. I was reluctant to buy another as there was a lot of bad press about this make and the man at Comet assured me that LG were a good make. The machine cost £350 (we got a good discount through trading in the old machine). I was particularly interested in this machine as it had a large 7kg load capacity and will apparently take a double duvet although I have not tried this. The first problem ? and one to bear in mind ? is the depth of the machine. My old machine was a standard size and fitted nicely into the slot in my kitchen. This model is in fact deeper than the average machine and it stuck old so badly I couldn?t open one of the kitchen unit doors. Fortunately as we were moving I hoped we wouldn?t have this problem in the new house. The machine is still not flush with my units in the new house and does still stick out a bit. The second thing about this machine I?m not keen on is the time it takes to finish some of the cycles. The 40 degree cotton wash is over 2 hours and if you do a 60 degree eco wash you are looking at over 3 hours! This can mean the machine is on nearly all day if I?m doing several washes. As far as reliability is concerned the machine has always worked but there have been quite a few problems with the load being out of balance. Sometimes the machine can?t correct the balance so it never finishes the cycle properly. More worryingly the machine has not corrected some loads resulting in the machine physically leaving the floor and making it?s way across the kitchen! The drum has been so out it has rubbed itself against another part of the machine and sparks can be seen through the glass door durin
g the final fast spin. We have called out the engineer several times regarding this problem and he has fixed it although it does seem to come back after a while. I did ask the engineer if he often had this problem with LG?s and he said that generally they were a good reliable make. I suppose we have just been unlucky. Conclusion I am generally happy with this machine ? as far as the balance being out is concerned, I think we have just been unlucky.

- 01/04/05 I too have an LG WM 1290FHB and fully support the comments made about the machine finding difficulty in balancing when trying to enter a spin cycle. Also supplied by Comet and after 3 visits from their engineer with another scheduled for next week the problem has not been resolved. Personally I feel the drum has insufficent support and would benefit from additional retention springs at the back of the drum to stop it moving forward violently when first entering a spin cycle. I will continue to complain until the problem is rectified or the machine is replaced. My advise to others who do not wish to be disturbed by the banging which sounds like thunder is to stay clear of this machine.

- 25/07/04 An excellent op! I have the very same machine as you. Sometimes, it does have trouble balancing the load and will give a slightly noisy spin, nothing compared to the way you've described yours behaving though. I hope you have better luck with it in future! Handy hint for ya, if you press the "TEMP" button whilst it's washing, the display tells you the temp the water has reached! Bye for now - J |
