Well my 16 year old Phillips Washing Machine finally had to go to the washing machine cemetary - RIP. It had never gone wrong in all of that time and if I could have purchased another - I would have. Sadly, Philips, for whatever reason, no longer make washing machines. So now what do I buy ? - I decide to ask the independant expert, our nieghbour who is a washing machine engineer, his advice - Bosch or Samsung. This advice was based on his experience over the years. He told me not to buy Hotpoint, Servis, Hoover, Creda, Zanussi - they are all troublesome.

I looked at the Bosch and Samsungs on offer and then checked the facilities against price/performance. I finally decided on the Samsung simply because it was a lot cheaper than the equivelant Bosch Machines and it came with a 2 year guarantee.

Next question, where to buy ? well I soon found that all Samsungs are delivered direct from the factory, so realistically, it doesn't matter too much. I found PluggedIn.com ( Northern Electric ) to be very helpful and they quoted the lowest like for like price.

I was given a 4/5 day estimated delivery, so I placed my order on a Monday. Samsung rang me later the same day and delivered on the Friday as promised. Delivery was free and the team even took my old washer and all the packaging away for no extra charge.

They placed the new Samsung in my kitchen, as requested. 20 minutes later, the Samsung was up and running. It is early days, but I am so impressed with the Samsung, it is extremely quiet, simple to use, yet actually quite sophisticated. It has a digital display, it even plays a little tune when the wash is complete. The door is electronic, so cannot be forced open, it even has it's own fault diagnosis programme built in. Timer delay, Fuzzy Logic, adjustable spin speeds etc. All of this for less than £300. Well pleased.

Actually, Philips now trade as Whirlpool, which just shows you how silly it is to change a name everyone knows to one they don't! Anyway, the Samsung is probably a better bet - I must admit I didn't realise they made washers, so this op could be v.useful if our aged Ariston gives up. Be nice to have something quiet...
