Advantages: Looks great, Washes well, Extra features

Disadvantages: Not the cheapest on the market

We decided to buy a new washing machine when our old one decided to make a dramatic exit by catching fire in the kitchen! Luckily we were in at the time, and after much swearing, shoving and water throwing (Ok, not the thing you should do when an electrical appliance is on fire, but at the time it seemed like a good idea, even though more water ended up on the kitchen floor than on the burning washing machine!), we managed to get the offending appliance outside with the minimum of damage. This, however, left us not only with a great gaping hole under the kitchen counter where the washer had lived, but a gigantic pile of toddler generated washing, and no means of washing it except by hand....hmmm, not good (although the 'clothes in bath, swirl round with hung onto hockey stick from school days' approach did wash the clothes quite effectively, the wringing out was an absolute nightmare!) There was nothing for it but to invest in a new washing machine.

Being fairly impoverished after the Christmas prezzie buying palaver, (this being about Feburary), we decided to turn to our old friend the home shopping catalogue. Limited choice, you might think, but not if you have five or six different catalogues! Three things enticed us into eventually ordering this model; firstly, the colour options, which include the silver which we went for (alright not a particularly good reason for choosing a washing machine, but we had just redecorated the kitchen, so it seemed to matter!), secondly the price, which although not the absolute cheapest (partly to do with our choice of colour) was reasonable, plus the energy efficiency rating of B, which, again, whilst not the best rating, was the best we could afford in the colour we wanted (OK, maybe the colour thing did get a bit too important!)

The washing machine finally arrived, to a sigh of huge relief, and I proceeded to play with it in the traditional manner, washing everything in sight so I could test
out all the programmes! And believe me, there's a number of programmes to choose from; if you're really interested, there's a list below, if not, skip on through!

1. 90C + pre wash (normal fabrics) for heavily soiled stuff, a 40C wash followed by hot wash.

2. 60C colourfast cottons (cotton, linens etc without special finishes)

3. 50C polyester cottons (what it says!)

4. 40C Non colourfast cottons (my personal favourite for when you can't be bothered to sort the washing as it all comes out clean without running!)

5. Rinse/fast spin ("seperate rinse/spin for natural fabrics")

6. Fast spin (self explanatory)

7. 60C + pre wash (like programme 1, only a cooler second wash)

8. 50C delicate (delicate fabrics e.g. silks)

9. 40C quick wash (for acrylics, acetate etc)

10. Slow spin (for hand wash items)

11. Wool/Wool mixtures

12. Gentle spin (short spin for delicates)

There are other features on this washing machine too, such as half load and rinse hold. We worked it out at around 20 - 30p per wash, depending on which programme you are using.

This washing machine has all the regular features with some extras, washes really well, is reasonably quiet and economical, both to buy and to run. What's more, it also looks great in your kitchen and comes with both guarantee and after-sales helpline. Highly recommended.

You mean you'd let the manufacturewr limit you to preset programs? I insist on deciding the temperature for the kind of wash I do, mainly because I don't believe in using temperatures above 40 C. Hotter than that is bad for the machine, bad for the clothes and unnecessary.

Good op. I'd be quite impressed if my washing machine set on fire!
