Advantages: Does the job

Disadvantages: Not for big families or rugby teams

I decided it was time to buy a new washing machine when the rattling noise and excessive smoke from my old one became just too much aggravation, after all it had been chugging away for nearly twelve years which isn't bad mileage in the present throw-away society we're living in. The Zanussi ZWC 1300 seems a well made washing machine and the price I paid which I suppose was reasonable. This might partly be due to its rather limited range of features, but as far as I'm concerned it washes pretty well and wash loads on the whole don't seem to take as long as my previous washer which was a Hotpoint.

The drum size is about average at 4.5 Kg and the machine possesses a top spin speed of 1300 rpm which is about average for today's machines. I prefer a spin speed range at the lower end because this means less wear and tear in the long run. There really is no need for super-fast spins. The spin, although not quiet, does not produce too much noise and there is no rattle and hum or excessive vibration - just a gentle tingle. Neither does the machine gradually slide across the kitchen floor towards the cooker as was the case with my older washer.

The overall energy rating is A but the spin performance and Wash performance are both only rated at B. I think the wash performance related to how much water the machine uses. The one thing I do like is the large door that opens and shuts without much fuss and it's easy to get your washing in and out relatively quickly. The controls are easy to use and are not over-fiddly as they are on so many appliances nowadays. Most importantly the results from the wash are more than satisfactory - of course this will vary with the quality of powders and conditioners you use.

~ Drawback ~
There is no half load function so you really have to fill it up if you want to get the most energy efficiency out of it. However, there is an economy wash so I suppose that makes up for it.

This washing machine might be a little short on features, but the build quality seems to be of a high enough standard - although only time will tell. It would probably be more suitable for a single person or a couple, but not big families and rugby teams that require excessive loads. If you're not too bothered about fancy features such as memory functions, fuzzy logic and anti bacterial programmes, then this washing machine might be the most suitable option.

I've been looking around for a new washer. I might look in to this one some more.

This is far too small for my family but a good read.

Actually the lower a spin speed the damper or wetter clothing can turn out to be. This was the case with both Hotpoint 1000 and Zanussi washers I had to put up with as a student. Took an hour to get the programmes going and then after the final rinse had to rinse it again for the fact that towels were still never fully wrung out. 1300RPM is just about okay - I find that even at 1100 and 1200 rpm washers, the clothing produced at the end is usually still very wet regardless of the weight of the clothing.
