Philippe Starck PH1100
by jaco
I own this watch for about 1 year and 8 months now. During the garanty period the watch was out of order for 4 times. One time a peace was falling off. Result: new watch.
Also another time I got a new watch, because the problems could not be solved. The numbers where displayed only half. This happanend 2 times, the last time I got a ... new watch again.
Now, when my watch is outside the garanty period, this watch has the same problem, the numbers are appearing for half. It is impossible to read the time.
New Duracell battery placed, but the problem still stays.
Because this is my thirth watch with the same problems now, the problem seems to be a structural problem of this watch.
I think it is useless to bring the watch back again for repairing, because now I will have to pay for it and the problems will start in a few months again.
Also the glass get easily scratches. Read the complete review |

Rotary Fob Watch
by Larrabee
My parents very kindly bought me this very traditional style fob watch by Rotary when I started my nursing degree. It officially costs around £70 but is often available at a lower price both online and in high street jewellers, mine came from H Samuel.
The 'strap' and casing are an attractive light silver colour although I ... don't think they are real silver! It doesn't mark or get greasy easily and stays looking bright. The watch face is white with very clear and easy to read black numbers and markings for the seconds, this is useful for student nurses as we often use the second hand for recording pulses, respiratory rates etc. The hour and minute hands have a glow in the dark strip that is handy for checking the time on night shifts!
The watch also has a smaller system of numbering in red that is apparently to do with 'base 30 pulsation', I have to admit, I don't really understand what this is for and neither do any of the tutors or qualified nurses I've asked but if you do know what it is then I'm sure its a very useful feature on a fob watch!
The 'strap' has an attractive 'link' design that's a bit unusual and stops the watch seeming old fashioned. The image above is of an older style but you can see the new design if you do a quick google search. A lot of nurses these days wear the plastic brightly coloured watches but I still think the more traditional silver ones are lovely, and I was very proud and excited the first time I pinned it to my bright white new uniform!
The watch is water resistant and comes with a lifetime guarantee, it comes in a very nice, simple presentation box in which it sits on a little plump cushion. Its a great gift if you know a budding student nurse about to embark on life on the wards! Read the complete review |

Men's Seiko 5 SNXS79
by pooying
I bought the Men's Seiko 5 Automatic Watch SNXS79 for my father's 80th birthday and he is absolutely delighted with it.
The Seiko 5 range comes with a selection of face colours, including blue, white and black. (I believe I also saw a green or gold face, but please check this on the websites if you intent to purchase, as I ... was rather 'watched out' after surfing so many watches prior to purchase!)
I deliberated between the white and black, eventually choosing the black which seemed easier for older eyes to read the hands. When it arrived, I was delighted with the actual colour - which instead of being a dense black, was a very tasteful charcoal grey/black and very slightly pearlised which against the stainless steel bracelet looked very classy.
I also chose an automatic - this requires no battery or winding up, as it is charged by movement. Power is stored in a spring in the movement of the watch and will easily last overnight if taken off. I had been warned that an automatic doesn't keep quite as good time as other operating systems, but this has kept perfect time so far (and my father's previous Seiko automatic also kept good time).
The movement can be seen through the clear panel in the back - which my father found fascinating.
The watch came beautifully presented on a black velvet cushion in a black velvet interior, in a box within a box. (Usually, I am totally against unnecessary packaging, but on this occasion I didn't mind because it was special present.)
The case width is 37mm and case depth 12mm - which seems to be a medium thickness - although it looks lovely and slim on my father's wrist. The strap is stainless steel and the online company I bought it from (watchshop.com) will alter the strap size free of charge if required. (My father altered it himself.)
It is water resistant to 30 metres. Whilst it is not supposed to be submerged, from my own experience and from research I did online, it seems that a quick recreational swim is fine. Be warned, however, if you do decide to chance it, this is not covered in the two year manufacturer guarantee.
Would I buy another Seiko? Definitely! Read the complete review |
