Advantages: Shock resistant, waterproof, just brilliant.
Disadvantages: Not the prettiest
Watches, for me, tend to be impulse buys. I'm not someone who has multiple watches, but at the same time I cannot be without one so as soon as one gives up the ghost, a desperate hunt begins to buy a new one as quickly as possible. That is how I came across the Casio Baby-G.
I work as an outdoor pursuits instructor and so demand quite a lot from my watch. When I saw this one half price at my local Argos I was drawn to its shock resistant claims and some of its other features. I'll try to outline these below, along with other things that I have found useful since buying the watch:
1. Shock resist feature
As I spend most of my work and leisure time outdoors messing about with boats, rocks, bikes and ropes, my watches take a bashing. One particularly sensible design feature is the way that the bezel of the watch stands a couple of millimetres proud of the glass watch face. This simple thing means that scratches on the face are much more rare than normal, in fact there is barely a mark on the face of my Baby-G. As for the rest of the built in shock resistance, all I can say is that I haven't broken it yet!
2. The display
The display on the Baby-G is neither particularly large, nor particularly small. There is, however, plenty of space for a clear digital display showing the time, day, date and alarm settings. Obviously the information displayed changes with the different settings but it is always clear and easy to read.
The natural follow on to talk about the display is to mention the light. So few ladies' watches have a light and I simply don't know why as I find it so useful. Slightly differently to most, the light works by making the actual digits light up, rather than the face around the digits. The light is white also and nicely effective. Much nicer than the old-fashioned green glow.
It is easy to change between the different functions of the watch and it is also surprising how much I use a stop watch. The controls are nice and simple, what more can I say?
To compliment the stopwatch is a count down timer. I use this to time the washing, the cooking, all sorts of things. The difference between the timer and the stopwatch is that you set the amount of time (say 12 mins for a pizza in the oven) and the watch counts down the time, beeping when it gets to zero. I understand that not everyone would use this feature but I find it very handy.
The watch has 4 alarms, which can be set to different times. They do, however have that really annoying digital watch beeping sound - but then it is a digital watch so what can you expect I guess. Personally I don't like being woken by a nasty beeping so tend to only use the alarm functions occasionally when I have no other option.
7. World Clock
The watch will automatically adjust the time when you are abroad simply by setting the major city for the time zone - London, Moscow etc. Personally, I don't travel often so have no use for this function but I'm sure it would be very useful to those who do jet off around the world a lot, or if you have friends or family around the world and want to check the time before you phone.
The Baby-G is waterproof to 10 bar which is 100m. Although this does not mean that you can dive with it, it is plenty for swimming, boating and other watery pursuits, or just doing the washing up without worrying!
In short, the build quality is good and the watch is showing no signs of wear. Although aesthetically I was not immediately taken by the Baby-G, it has grown on me and at least looks a bit more feminine than most 'practical watches'.
I wholeheartedly recommend this watch!
Summary: If you need a tough watch, you need this watch!
