Advantages: Easily accessible barometer, altimeter and compass by independant buttons! Waterproof, alarms, light
Disadvantages: Bulky watch. Other than that, it does what it says on the tin
I have just got back into hill walking and needed a watch that performs.
The Casio Protrek Triple Sensor sports watch has a digital compass, barometer, altimeter and thermometer. As well as having five alarms, stop watch and the solid reliability of being a Casio.
The barometer has a little graph on the screen so you can see whether the pressure is dropping or rising. With this information you can predict weather changes which is great. Gives you a chance to get ya water proofs on if the pressures dropping, usually means bad weathers due.
The altimeter works with the barometer so isn't pin point accurate, but is useful. You can also manually set it. Let me give you an example, I set it to zero at work, then walked up a load of stairs and it had measured how high I was, which I thought was pretty cool.
The watch has independant buttons for the compass, barometer and altimeter so the information is easily accessible.
The only downside I would say to this watch is its size. It is quite a chunky watch, which I personally like. I want a screen so I can actually see the time on it rather than a tiny screen with loads of confusing information on it often found on rival models.
If you're after a watch for hill walking/mountaineering and you're on a budget, this is the watch for you.
Summary: Ideal watch for the budget minded hill walker
