“ Brand: Flik Flak / Type: Kids Watch „
My 2 year old absolutely loves numbers, and therefore, clocks and watches, she's always 'borrowing' mine and my husband's where she'll sit watching it, mesmerised. She also loves cats (what little girl doesn't!) even though we don't have one, so naturally when we saw the Flik Flak Romantic Cat Watch on sale we knew it would make a lovely birthday present for her.
We paid £25 for the watch in an independent high street watch retailer however looking on the net this seems to be a good price for it as it looks to be averaging at around £26 plus postage and packing online.
The watch is a buckle watch however it has enough holes in the strap to mean it does fit her 2 year old wrist and will continue to fit her throughout childhood. The watch is an analogue (ie, with a face and hands) which meant a lot to us as you can buy a lot of children's watches which are a lift up style with a digital display underneath. I wanted a 'proper' watch face as I want my daughter to learn how to tell the time, 2 is young yes but I learned very young and I want to encourage my daughter to, too. The strap is fashioned from a strong pink plastic which has a design of cartoon like cats and hearts and flowers on it - it's absolutely gorgeous, not cheap looking, so very 'Disney' 1950s I can't tell you. Really really nice, I'd wear it myself! The face is pink with red numerals and on the outside edge green numerals to help with time telling. The hands are red for the hour and a purple / lavender for the minute. It really is made in a way which means time telling on it is very clear and simple.
The watch is battery powered and a standard watch battery is provided. It's very comfortable to wear, I haven't noticed any sweatiness or reaction on my daughter and she has sensitive skin, in fact she's happy to wear the watch all day which is very cute. It being pink it goes with all her outfits (and shoes!!) too. She's already learning the very basics of time telling and as she can already count to 15 and recognise the numbers, this is only strengthening her learning.
The Flik Flak Romantic Cat Watch is just such a lovely watch - yes it's a little more pricey than other children's watches, but it is so well made and designed that it will surely last for years. It would make a lovely gift, and indeed it is presented in a plastic case which would lend itself nicely to being wrapped.
Overall I can do nothing but praise the Flik Flak Romantic Cat Watch for little ladies and recommend it as a great watch for girls 2 - 10 years old (and older depending on their tastes and wrist size). It's gorgeous and as soon as I saw it in the watch shop I said to my husband my daughter would love it. I was right!
My daughter received this gorgeous Flik Flak watch for Christmas, it was a present from Mark's cousin who knows nothing about children (being a lifelong bachelor) and the watch went into a drawer for 'when she's older'. She'd never shown any interest in learning the time, but after spotting the watch a few days after Christmas she decided to start wearing it. The clever face design meant she taught herself the basics of telling the time within a couple of weeks, and now is almost completely proficient at it.
Flik Flak have created a lovely little watch here that has been designed to make it a simpler process to learn to tell the time. The numerals are well placed and a good size in relation to the face of the watch; they have shown the number for hours in a bold red, while minutes are coloured in grey and displayed in increments of five minutes. The watch hands are colour-coded to match the numerals so the child will know at a glance that the red hand is showing the hour, and the longer grey hand is pointing to the grey minutes. Unless you have a child who is learning to tell the time you probably won't be very impressed by this, but believe me when I say that this simple colour scheme is extremely helpful.
The strap of the watch is fabric with a predominantly pink design. The 'Romantic Cat' name comes from the pretty rose pattern and the stylish looking cat who is strolling the length of the strap. The watch fastens with a chunky plastic buckle and the fastening holes are well spaced and tidily punched into the strap - this watch is for children aged five and above so the strap is very loose on the wrist of my skinny four year old, her dad was going to punch a new hole so that she can tighten it properly but in the end he left it as it was as he was worried about spoiling the fabric.
The watch face is made of aluminium and it features a scratch resistant face, this is perfect as Hollie likes to wear hers in the garden and the fact that it still looks as good as new is quite impressive in my opinion! Flik Flak make watches that are designed to be durable even when worn by young children, so it came as no surprise that this one is even suitable to be popped in the washing machine! I've done this once (when Hollie's toddler brother was sick on the strap - long revolting story) and it was fine; to protect the face and buckle of the watch I popped it inside a zippy up pocket in a pair of trousers, set the machine to thirty degrees and when the watch came back out it was not only spotless but still working.
This Romantic Cat watch keeps perfect time and has done since Hollie received it, this is important when choosing a watch for a little person as any 'offness' can easily distract them from the task in hand. I know the design is the main thing for Hollie though, the pinkness really appeals to her girly side and she seems proud to not only be telling the time alone but also to wear the watch.
