***This review is for the Gucci 5505 ladies watch from the 5505 series. Dooyoo have advised although the category states "mens" watch it intended for all watches in the 5505 series***
For my 21st birthday my parents wanted to buy me something memorable and something that I could keep for many years therefore a watch seemed like a sensible gift. What I was not expecting was they would be so generous (or choose something I would like) however on both counts they surprised me and gave to me a Gucci 5505 Ladies Watch (Black Face) .
My parents purchased this watch 4 years ago from Goldsmiths. However it was also available in Ernest Jones and Beaverbrook's jewellers. I have visited Goldsmith in the last year and the Gucci 5505 Ladies Watch is still available.
At time of writing this review (May 2011) it is currently also online from a number of online jewellers.
As it was a gift I should not really know the price, however as my parents took out insurance on this watch (and gave me the insurance documents) I checked. It was £600 which is VERY expensive (and generous) however if you consider this is something that you will be wearing for many years it is a slightly more economical investment. I have been wearing this watch for the last 4 years and plan on wearing it for at least another 4 years minimum!
***Gucci 5505 Women's Watch***
Immediately when I unwrapped the Gucci 5505 watch I knew it was from Gucci; the gift box it comes in looks very expensive and is very attractive. This is a padded square bronze gift box with Gucci written in gold font on top of the box. When opened inside is padded black velvet with the watch held inside. As a gift this really is beautiful and really is memorable.
The Gucci 5505 Watch is a beautiful classic feminine watch and really does look like and expensive watch. The bracelet of the watch is made from polished and brushed stainless steel. This is a very traditional bracelet made from 5 rows of links (width ways). The links alternate so there are 3 brushed steel rows and 2 polished steel rows. The bracelet has a "push button clasp" which is very easy to open and shut but has never come undone. I did find that the watch was rather large for me initially and need 3 lengths of links to be taken out in order for it to fit me although my wrist is particularly small. Goldsmiths offer this service for free if you purchase watches from them. The bracelet is comfortable and does not irritate even when you do get hot.
The face/ dial of the watch is classic but feminine and very subtle. The dial has a polished stainless steel case which is 29mm in diameter, therefore large enough to check the time but not huge or overbearing on smaller female wrists. The face of the watch has a matt black dial with small silver tone hands. Gucci is written in small silver font across the face. There are 11 diamonds on the dial (0.46 carat in total) which are positioned where numbers on a traditional watch would be. At the "3" point there is no diamond instead a date display. The watch has a third hand to count seconds which I feel is a benefit as many other "fashion" designer watches do not have this.
This is a really beautiful watch and I have received a lot of compliments about it. The stainless steel has not tarnished at all and is still a bright white colour which makes it look very expensive. The watch face is very subtle but the diamonds do make it look very special and contrast and shine very well against the black watch face. Telling the time on the watch is very easy and you can glance down quickly to do so as the silver hands show up very well against the black face. With the white mother of pearl version of this watch it would be more difficult to do this.
What I like about the Gucci 5505 watch is although it is a designer watch it is understated and does not have the brand emblazoned all over it, which may watches do (which in my opinion spoils many designer watches). Gucci is written in thin silver letting on the face of the watch, which is large enough to read if you are up close but not something that you would notice immediately. Personally I think a designer watch should be subtle and the design of the bracelet and face should be what you notice rather than what brand it is, therefore if you are looking to buy a designer watch as a status symbol and to let everyone know what brand it is, this is not for you.
The watch has a "Swiss Quartz Movement" mechanism which apparently means it operates more smoothly. It does require a battery however in 4 years it has only had the battery replaced twice which is a lot less regularly than other watches that I have owned.
After 4 years of wear the watch does have some very light scratches and scuffs on the side of the face on the casing but not on the scratch resistant crystal face. This is only very light and noticeable if you look closely and more noticeable as the casing on the side of the face is a shiny stainless steel. I think this is excellent considering my previous watch (which cost in the region of £100) scratched extremely easy and after 6 months of wear required replacing. With the insurance my parents purchased from Goldsmiths alongside the Gucci watch if the face of the watch becomes scratched it can be replaced under the insurance.
The watch is water resistant to 30m, however I tend not to wear the watch in water, even though for this price I trust would expect the watch to live up to these claims. I have jumped in the shower and bath on a few occasions with the watch on and submerged it fully in water and it still works. I do not plan on diving or indeed wearing this watch to go diving so will not be able to test these claims.
This is a very expensive watch at £600 but if you are looking to make an investment in a watch that will last you for years this could be it. The stainless steel bracelet is simple yet expensive looking and has a very white shine to it, even after wearing it for over 5 years. The face of the watch is simple and easy to check what time it is without it being too large, which makes it feminine and great for those with smaller wrists or who don't want something to extravagant looking.
The simple black face with the chrome bracelet looks timeless and can be matched with a variety of outfits for different occasions. The small diamonds positioned at the different clock times make it easy to check what time it is but add a more special feel to the watch.
A beautiful, watch which is timeless and will look great for years to come; for once my parents were actually right about something!
