      Butterflies

I bought this Guess watch set for my daughter a few years ago, she'd recently had a butterfly tattoo and was going through a bit of a passion for butterflies in general - like the rest of us she relies on her phone for the time now but at that point she wore a watch every day. She had a small collection going so this set was hardly used until she sorted out her bedroom a few weeks back and passed it on to her eight year old sister.

Hollie has been proudly wearing it ever since, her dad's had to put a couple of extra holes in the straps (and it's still huge on her little wrist) but she loves it. So much so a trip to Argos is planned for tomorrow to get her a kiddie sized butterfly watch as she's really taken to this one.

The design is ultra pretty and the watch face is easily swapped between the three straps included with the watch. Hollie likes the pink one (obviously...) but personally I think the baby blue strap is nicest and goes best with the monochrome(ish) pattern of the butterflies on the watch face.

The watch keeps time well, I've been able to keep an eye on this as Hollie is learning the time at the moment so I've made a point of asking her the time and checking it against the clock in the kitchen - she's been spot on pretty much every time, and any errors have been proved to be human error not down to the accuracy of the watch!

I forget how much I paid for the watch, it was at least three years ago though so I suppose the price is largely irrelevant now anyway. It was a stocking filler so wouldn't have cost too much, hence the reason it's been passed on to be bumped about my a little kid I suppose as if it was worth more I'm sure Charlotte would have kept it for herself!

      Worth treating yourself on...

      Who?

GUESS is clothing line, that was found in L.A. in 1981 by four French brothers [Georges, Armand, Paul, and Maurice Marciano]. The company also owns an additional line; Marciano.

In the U.K. GUESS accessories [including watches, handbags, jewellery and perfumes] sell more than the clothing as they're more widely available. In my experience it is the watches that are the most popular, since they are sold at more shops and online sites then anything else in the GUESS/Marciano ranges.

      The Design
      - - - - - - - - - -

The design is a classic analogue, silvertone watch face, which is just short of 1.5 inches in circumference. The outer rim of the watch face is decorated using a zigzag pattern engraved into the metal, and this pattern is studded with Swarovski crystals.

The watch face is adorned with four butterflies and has the Guess brand in small dark grey lettering underneath the 12 o'clock mark. The rim of the face is bordered by little dark grey dots and there are no numbers used on the watch - the o'clock marks are easily identified by silver dots, that are bigger then the others used in the border.

The smallest butterfly design on the face is just a silver outline, but the other three [all varying sizes] are accented with Swarovski crystals. The crystals used on my watch are in two shades of pink, but some later versions of the same watch design use clear crystals to accent the butterflies.

But the main selling point to this particular watch design comes in the form of three interchangeable leather buckle clasp straps in pink, white and turquoise. The straps are all 8.5 inches long and 0.5 inches in width. All three straps are decorated with a crocodile skin embossed effect.

This product is described by the manufacturer as being water resistant to 30m.

Guess watches come with a two year manufacturer's guarantee and/or a ten year limited warranty, it varies from retailer to retailer.

      How has it lasted ?

My watch is now almost six years old and I've dropped it and banged it too many times to count - and this has still had no ill effect on it after all of this time.

I'm impressed by the fact that none of the crystals have become lose and/or fallen off - either on the watch face, or around the outer casing. The watch face is scratch free, the buckles and holes of the straps aren't worn or frayed, and the underside of the straps are still unstained. If the outer sides of the straps have ever become dirty I've just wiped them down with a damp sponge and they've always cleaned nicely.

The battery lasted for over two years - closer to three - before running out, so whilst I'm not sure about the average time period for battery life, I think two changes during six years is very good.

      Would I buy it again?

If I lost my watch today I would pay the RRP for another one: I own six watches by GUESS because they have proven themselves to be well-made. The designs are all feminine and easy to dress up or down. And this particular design is really three watches in one, so the price is reasonable when you look at it like that. It is expensive looking - but not in a flashy, "please come over and mug me" way.

There are designs to suit most people too - some of the watches in the GUESS range have faces 3 inches in circumference. And there are numerous designs that use a bracelet strap, rather then leather.

One thing: I have the older version which uses pink crystals to accent the butterflies on the watch face, so the turquoise watch strap is a mis-match and isn't something I use - not a huge deal breaker, but, yeah, I'm a bit too fussy. Like I mentioned above some of the later versions use clear crystals on the butterfly designs, so this problem has been solved now.

I've only seen the set of three straps online. You can buy the same watch in store for the same price, but you only get the one strap. Larger jewellers may stock the set, but I don't have any large stores near me to go and check out.
