I don't wear watches very often but when I do I like them to be individual and hard wearing. I don't go in for the sparkly stones, my husband wanted to buy me a gold watch but I think that they look tacky; I prefer my watches to be nice looking but tough. Which is why the Kahuna range of watches caught my eye, they are distinctive, individual and hard wearing.

The watch I have got is the Kahuna Ladies brown Cuff Strap Watch AKUS-0029L, I brought it from Hinds the jewellers in October 2010 and it cost £34.99, it currently retails on amazon.co.uk for £19.29 + postage. Which I think is quite a bargain.

The watch comes in a padded zip up pouch, I suppose this adds to its tough look, but would not be very good to give as a gift, it would need swapping into a much nicer box to make a good gift. The watch comes with a two year guarantee that does not cover breakages through mishandling or accidental damage, normal wear and tear, the battery glass or strap. So it's a pretty useless guarantee.

The watch is very attractive to look at, with its brushed stainless steel buckle and case. The brown leather strap is very soft and comfortable and fits round the wrist with ease as it has seven holes for the buckle to go through. The length of the strap is 21cm, the first hole starts at 7cm from the centre of the watch and the last is 11cm. The leather is patterned with leaves and flowers, the pattern was very visible at first, but now the leather has aged it is not very easy to see unless you are looking for it.

As this is a cuff watch the watch face itself is sat on top of the strap and is attached with two leather straps. This is good if you are sensitive to the back of watches. The watch face is square and has an analogue display, the time is marked at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 points around the face and in-between them is a little silver peg for the missing numbers. The watch has a good sized hour and minute hand and a very thin second hand. On the watch face is written the brand name and a small 50m indicating that the watch is waterproof to a depth of 50 meters. In the lower right hand corner is a small brown flower in place of numbers 4 & 5. The background to the watch face is a slightly shiny brown with a darker brown stripe through the centre.

The time is easy to set. Just pull the dial out and twist it clockwise till it says the correct time, then click it back into place.

When the battery needs replacing it should be done by a professional as the watch face needs removing from the cuff and the watch back will need resealing to maintain its waterproofness.

I happily wore this watch day to day for over a year, then one day spotted that it had stopped working, I assume the battery needs replacing as there is no way I have been deeper than 50 meters in water. The only water action it saw was splashes from the pots and water fights last summer with the kids. The glass face of the watch has no scratches and the leather strap still has plenty of life left in it. The brushed steel case has a bit of weathering on it, little (for want of a better word) rusty speckles that I can only see when I look really closely. The watch has now been popped back into its not so fancy case until I get around to having the battery replaced.
