Oasis B490 Ladies Analogue Bracelet
Advantages: Pretty, subtle design, good quality, self-adjustable
Disadvantages: Far too big for thin wrists, lack of markers and rectangular face make it hard to read
On the hunt for a new watch at the start of this year, I found this Oasis one on Amazon which I really liked the look of. It looked simple without being boring, and elegant without being too bling! Plus, it was from a brand that I trust- several of my friends have Oasis watches and they've always looked like they were of a good quality. Currently available for just £18.74 from Argos, this watch was priced at £30 when I was looking to buy. While it's hardly an excessive price for a decent quality watch, a lot of the other Oasis watches I saw were around half that price, and, being a cheapskate, I wasn't sure whether I should go for one of these cheaper options or stick with the one I liked best. Happily, my dilemma was solved by a quick visit to ebay- the watch I wanted was for sale, virtually unused, and with bidding ending the next morning, I secured it for a bargainous £2.04!
When the watch arrived, I was delighted to find that it was indeed in mint condition- even the black Oasis case it arrived in looked brand new. I love the way watches are presented, wrapped around those podgy cushions, and this was no exception. The little cushion it came with was black and velvety, setting the silver coloured, stainless steel bracelet off to perfection. The whole thing had a classy look to it, and I would be happy to give it as a gift to someone.
The watch also lived up to its picture- with a simple, shiny, stainless steel bracelet made up of thin, rectangular links and a plain black face, also rectangular, it's the kind of watch that goes with pretty much any outfit, and can look dressy with a...erm...dress, or blend in with a more casual look for everyday wear.
I really like the bracelet itself- being very petite, I can't really get away with wearing some of the big, bold watches you can get, as they just looked hideously oversized on my little wrists! So bracelet width was something I looked carefully at before choosing this watch. The links are about 9mm wide, and just over 1cm long, and they're made of quite thin stainless steel, giving them a delicate yet solid appearance. One of the links is also removable, so you can adjust it yourself if you need to. It's easy to remove this link- it just clips onto the bracelet with a normal watch clasp. The watch was certainly generously sized with this removeable link in place, measuring nearly 20cm when laid flat. I'm sure this would be too big for most women's wrists, even if you want a loose-fitting watch. Even after removing this link, the watch was still too large for my wrist, so I had to have another link taken out; with this further link removed, the watch is now comfortable- loose, but not ridiculously so. The watch clasp is easy to undo, but, once clicked into place, stays secure- the perfect balance.
The black face of the watch is surrounded by a thin rectangle of stainless steel, and the two colours contrast nicely. The black face really helps the silver watch hands to stand out, so it's easy to read- in one sense, at least. Unfortunately, telling the time with this watch can be a less-than-accurate process, thanks to the watch's rectangular face, paired with a lack of numbers. The only markers on the face are a small diamond at 12 o'clock, and a tiny silver line at 6 o'clock. The quarters are completely unmarked, so you have to use your knowledge of angles to guess the time! The elongated face makes this trickier, as I'm usually used to looking at the hands on a square or circular face. So this definitely isn't the best watch for precise timekeeping! The hands themselves are quite short, giving the watch face a minimalistic appearance which goes well with the simplicity of the bracelet. The watch also has a second hand, so at least you can count the seconds, even if you have to guess at the time!
The diamond, a feature that had been bigged up on several websites where this watch was for sale, is very small and thin, but makes a nice, decorative feature against the black face. It's rather white in appearance, however- I'm not sure if this is because it's seriously flawed, or because of the way it's been stuck onto the watch, but either way, it doesn't look great. Still, you'd only notice this if you examined it in detail- from any distance, it just looks like a sparkly little blob!
Functionally, this watch has behaved itself perfectly since I got it- it keeps time well, is splash proof and easy to wipe clean if needs be, and I haven't had to replace the battery yet. The only slight hitch I've had with it is that the little attachment at the side that you pull out to adjust the hands (I'm sure there must be a name for it!) is very stiff, and even with my moderately long fingernails, I struggled to pull it out at first. Now that I've done it a few times, it's loosened up a bit, but I initially thought I wouldn't be able to budge it! Still, at least it doesn't pop out of its own accord, like on some watches I've had in the past.
Overall, I'm really pleased with this watch, and would certainly recommend it for anyone who wants a simple, stylish watch that goes with anything. For its current price, it's great value- the only drawback is the fact that it's awkward to read, so if precise timekeeping is important to you, I'd give this one a miss.
Summary: A good value watch that looks good, but at the cost of readability
