Pulsar PJ6021X1 Men's Watch

When my trusty Sekonda watch of 6 years finally decided to invent its own time-keeping system by adding a few minutes onto each day I decided I needed a replacement. I was very happy with my Sekonda whilst it still obeyed international time standards so decided to look for a new watch with a similar design.
Armed with a budget no greater than £50 I looked at various online watch shops for an analogue watch with a bracelet-style strap. Shortly into my search I had warmed to the idea of having a watch with a date function on; something lacking from my old watch. After all, I usually end up guessing the date on important forms or doing some time consuming on the spot calculations - If Christmas day is a Tuesday then today's date is...
=== Design ===
I quickly came across the Pulsar PJ6021X1 and was immediately attracted by its smart, professional looking style. With a silver stainless steel bracelet strap and a black dial face it looks so much better than my old Sekonda which had a blue dial and shinier chrome effect strap. The duller silver finish of the Pulsar looks more sophisticated and business-like and the black dial and neat silver hour markers and hands are also a stylish improvement. There is a shiny circular band around the watch face which I think contrasts very nicely with the black face and the less shiny watch strap. The hands are also block-shaped, not pointed, which I much prefer purely for their simplistic and neat appeal. I think the watch's stylish and simple design makes it an attractive option for men of all ages. The watch looks much sharper in reality than the picture shown which does not do it justice.
The hands themselves have a thin glow in the dark strip down the middle (bar the second hand) and there are also small glow in the dark spots behind the main hour markers. The ability to see the time in the dark is not improved though. I still need to be in a room with some light for the glow in the dark material to be seen. Sat in the cinema for example is no good whatsoever and likewise in my bedroom at night I cannot see anything except the blurred outline of the watch itself.
On the right hand side of the dial, at the 3 o'clock mark, sits a white day and date box currently showing [ FRI 6 ] in a large black font. This is by far my favourite feature of the watch (admittedly there are few to get excited over) and is easily seen against the contrasting black dial face. I have good enough eyesight myself but I would think that people who require reading glasses will still be able to make out the date without needed their spectacles. The font is large and clear enough. The only difficulty may be discerning between a 6 and an 8.
=== Setting the Time/Date ===
To set the time and date function there is only one turning dial on the right hand side of the watch face. To set the time you need to pull this dial outwards all the way (two clicks) and move clockwise to the desired time. To set the day and date is a little trickier and requires you to pull the dial out only one click - a delicate touch is needed here and I find myself pulling it too far on many occasions. When done correctly, the time keeps on ticking whilst you are able to set the day and date. Turn clockwise to alternate the day and anticlockwise to alternate the date. The three-letter day and date automatically click over around 11pm -1am each day.
At the end of some months you will have to reset the date if the month is shorter than 31 days. Otherwise you will find yourself living in some mystical world where February 31st actually exists. This is easy to do and only requires you to pull the dial out one click and turn anticlockwise to alternate the date - the day will not need changing nor will the time. A few seconds out of your day is all that's required, providing you remember. I must admit I usually forget and not until after using the incorrect date on several occasions will I remember that September only has 30 days.
=== Adjusting the Strap ===
When I first received my watch I had to have 4 links removed from the bracelet strap since my arm does not resemble a tree truck. The strap is much too large to fit the majority of people straight from the box and, unless your name happens to be Goliath, you will need to visit a watch specialist (extra expense!) or try to remove the links yourself (bodge alert!). Not trusting myself near my new watch with a paper clip and a shortage of knowhow I decided to spend £5 getting it done right. Here I was told that there are only five available links to remove because the ones surrounding the clasp cannot be taken off. I don't think this will be an issue though since I only needed four removed and my wrist is quite thin.
The push-button clasp mechanism has three holes for minor adjustments but the scope of change possible here is only a matter of millimetres. This is very easy to do yourself with a pin, as long as you are careful not to lose the spring rod on the floor when doing so. Having a patterned carpet really causes problems here!
Once adjusted to my liking the fold over clasp is good and strong and clicks into place without coming loose in the day at all. My old watch would sometimes spring open on occasions but I'm happy to report no problems with the Pulsar on this front. The watch sits comfortably on my wrist all day and I barely feel I have it on. The cold metal strap soon warms up to my body heat on a morning and the watch face sits firmly on the top on my wrist. The face is not too bulky or too large to cause conflict with my shirt sleeve at only 38mm in diameter and 10mm in thickness; the sizing is just right in my opinion.
=== Other Features ===
The Pulsar has a water resistance of 100m which I have not tested out. Ludicrously, I have never learned to swim so if I ever found myself 100m underwater I would have bigger things to concern myself with other than if my watch was still working.
It comes with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty and comes in an attractive white presentation box with a brief instructions booklet and a miniature watch pillow to hold the watch in place.
=== Reliability/Durability ===
I have had the watch now for almost a year and its quartz movement has kept time reliably since purchase. The time has not fallen behind by any noticeable amount and has not needed resetting except after I have accidently stopped it whilst trying to reset the date. The battery has also lasted well and has not yet needed changing, but I would expect nothing less after only 11 months.
The strap and watch face are very easy to wipe clean from dirt or grime and it doesn't smear or streak in the rain as much as some of my older watches. Despite knocking it against my desk and the wall on countless occasions, the glass face and strap have withstood any physical damage and no scratches or marks have yet appeared.

I would highly recommend this Pulsar watch for anyone looking for a smart sophisticated design with a clear analogue dial and additional date function. I will never go back to having a watch without a day/date function as I find this very handy indeed (pun unintended). It is without doubt the best looking watch I have ever owned and I will mourn the day when it needs replacing.
