These type of watches can be bought in so many different characters and we have had a few of them over the years, my son spotted this Thomas and Friends interchangable face watch in B&M's a few months back and priced at £1.99 I didn't mind buying it for him, despite having similar watches in the toy box at home.
These are fun and cute novelty items for kids but I wouldn't say it makes for a good learning aid as it is a digital watch and I would prefer my children to be able to tell the time by hands!
The faces on the watch can be swapped over and changed as and when the child pleases, the little disc slides on and off the closing clasp lid part of the watch but it can be a bit tricky to get them into place so is more of an adult job, they are easier to pull off them put on, as I have found! My son likes to pull the little faces off and 'loose' them so that he can change over to a different one every five minutes.
The colours are nice and bright and it is very true to the actual characters of the Thomas and Friends show. It comes with four different trains to choose from but Thomas has remained a firm favourite. My son is more into superhero's now so this is in the toy box but he does get it out now and again.
Fun as a little bracelet but not the worlds best watch, great fun for kids.
These watches are available in many different characters my son has the Thomas the tank engine one while my daughter has the Dora version. The basic concept with these watches is you get 4 different heads for the watch which you can swap and change to make the appearance different and each changeable head is related to the characters programme.
It is made of rubber for the watch strap itself and then the head of the watch is made out of solid plastic. Then you receive the Thomas head already pre attached to the watch and 3 replacements in the packet which are Percy Spencer and James all well known characters from the show.
The watch strap fits well on my 4 year old sons arm there are a few holes in the strap so it can be made shorter and larger so it gives a good age range available for children that this watch will fit and the watch itself is really light so it will not irritate little ones arms while it sits on it.
To change the heads it is very simple you slide the changeable head down and with a little bit of a push it clicks out of place. Then to add the new head you do the same push it into the whole provided and then upwards until it clicks into place.
The watch is bright and colourful it holds the Thomas the tank engine slogan across the watch straps and all the changeable heads are true to the characters from the TV show so very recognisable to children straight away.
To open the watch you pull the character at the left hand side and it opens up to reveal the time displayed on a small LCD screen when you push a button it also displays today's date. There are 2 buttons beneath this screen which you use to change the time to the correct setting and be warned you will have to do this a lot as it is easily knocked out of the correct place while in use.
**Is it durable? **
We have had this Thomas watch for around 2 years now and the Dora watch for around a year and neither has needed their batteries changing as yet so they do last well. The watch itself is still intact although we have lost the James head as the pieces are rather small and this mixed with young children as you would expect is not the best idea.
I have a few downsides to these watches which is a shame as my children really do love them.
1. The clock is shown digitally rather than a clock face with hands so although my children are just coming to the age they want to learn about telling the time they are unable to do so with their own watches which is a shame.
2. The changing of the faces can be really fiddly and although my oldest son has now learnt to change them it did take him a while and it can be really frustrating for them so a great novelty factor but not very practical
3. The 2 buttons of the front of the watch which set the time and date are really sensitive and whenever my son or daughter open their watch they always catch them which instantly change the time not that they can read it but also I think this is a little impractical.
** Summary **
Over all although it sounds like a lot of negatives it is a bright fun watch and my children like having their own to sit on their arm. It is a novelty item rather than day to day use but it is a fun addition all the same. It looks cheap but has lasted surprisingly well and if you asked my children it would get 5 out of 5 marks. It is not bank breaking and a nice little gift for any Thomas fan.
The watch is suitable for 3 years plus which is a good age recommendation as the heads of the watch are rather small and as it is fiddly to try and change the faces of the watch this seems reasonable. They retail for around £8 and can be brought from places like Argos, Tesco and asda. I would recommend this watch as my children love theirs but it is a novelty toy rather than anything else.
My four year old son is Thomas the tank daft like most boys of his age are. His birthday was a Thomas frenzy with Thomas themed birthday cake , table wear and of the presents. One of the Thomas gifts my son received was the Thomas & friends interchangeable head lcd watch.
As my son received the Thomas & friends interchangeable head lcd watch as a gift from a child that attended the party i have no idea where they purchased the watch or cost. After a little research i have found the watch for sale in Toys r us and Argos for £7.99.
The watch comes packaged in clear plastic so you can see the full length of watch and the straps, their are the three character interchangeable heads on display too, all mounted onto a piece of blue cardboard. I had to gently cut around the plastic to open it up.
The watch is very cute and vibrant colours, the face is made from plastic and the straps are plastic too but flexible. The straps are perfect sized to fit a childs small wrist and have the normal buckle fastener on it. The straps are decorated with various Thomas the tank characters.
The face is an lcd screen and displays the time in a little long window. My four year old cant tell the time yet so this is nice for me to be able to tell him ... the watch says its 2.00 pm etc and it seems to interest him. Setting the time is easy by sticking in a biro pen to get the digits to move forward to the correct time, this is done to the side of the watch.
The interchangeable faces its the fun bit for the children. My sons watch come with Thomas on it already and another three, Percy, Gordon and Diesel 10. The face on the watch just clips right off, it hangs from the top of the watch and clips onto the bar above the face so each little face has claws that clip on. Even my son can change these by himself and has fun doing so.
When the character face is on the watch you just flip it up to read the time. My son loves this watch and is the envy of all the little boys in his nursery class , the little boy who got him the watch also wants one for his christmas now lol.
I recommend the Thomas & friends interchangeable head lcd watch, although its plastic its a fun way to start introducing time to little ones.
Our daughter is 3 and a half and we thought that it was probably about the age that we should introduce her to the fact of time, she doesn't quite know all her numbers by sight yet so we thought it may also help her with this. For Christmas we had a look around and there were numerous different character watches we could get her. We finally made the decision that as she was showing an interest in character trains i.e Thomas and Chuggington we would buy her the interchangeable Thomas watch.
We had some capital bond vouchers so we went to Argos to buy this so we could use them, the watch cost £7.99 which wasn't too bad since we knew she was liable to break it. The Thomas watch comes as Thomas with an extra 3 interchangeable heads, the strap is made of plastic and has the Thomas logo on with markings like tracks etc on it and the watch came in a plastic case. The strap fits our daughter perfectly and there is still plenty of holes for as she gets bigger so I would say this will fit a wide age range.
The heads are very easy to change and they just click into place, when my daughter first saw the watch all she was interested in was changing the heads on the watch. The heads are Thomas on a red background, Percy on a red background, James on a yellow background and diesel on a blue background. As diesel isn't the nicest of engines in the programme my daughter decided she didn't want to use this one.
The time is shown on an LCD display and by pressing a button you are also able to view the date although at 3 year old my daughter has no clue what a date is. The only thing with this watch is I now wish we had bought her a watch with a real clock face as she got a book about telling the time for Christmas too and this is with real clock faces and she is starting to get the idea of the o'clock and half past.
I would recommend this watch for any avid Thomas fan although not particularly as a watch but just as it is nice and bright and the child has fun with the changing heads.
The Thomas & Friends Interchangable Head LCD Watch is a novelty digital watch aimed at children. It retails for around £8 online however I have seen it around £5 in supermarkets. It has a Thomas head with three other train heads (the lift up part which protects the LCD screen).
The watch looks quite nice when it is presented in it's plastic packaging and I can imagine any little Thomas fan would be quite pleased at getting this as a present, my nephew had this and coupled with any small child's desire to be 'just like mum/dad' the thought of his own watch was just as exciting as the thought of it being his favourite character!
However on closer inspection I'd have to say the watch is quite cheap looking and to be honest not much better than anything you could get in the pound shop. The strap is plain looking with no branding and a fairly cheap plasticky buckle. That said, it is at least waterproof and fairly kid proof.
The LCD screen is fairly clear, personally I prefer a child to learn to read the time properly on an analogue watch but in terms of this product it's easy to read. The downside for me is that the characters are only quite basic in terms of build quality and as there is no way of storing them they are easily lost.
Overall this is an OK gimmick but it is not a long term type watch or particularly exciting toy - a better quality watch and a separate Thomas toy might be a better investment.
My grandson is Thomas the tank engine mad, he has all the dvd's and bedding ad for his birthday I bought him the Thomas & Friends Interchangable Head LCD Watch which cost me £6.99 from Argos, this is a very reasonable price to pay for a childrens watch. The quality is quite good a durable study plastic watch with interchangable heads of the different engines in the Thiomas series. It has a good strap which fits a childs wrist nicelty and securely.
For your money you get the Thomas the tank engine head already on the watch and with this you get Percy, James and Diesel these are all charachters in the Thomas books, dvd's and toys which are in good detail and also made of plastic. The tops of the faces flip up to reveal the LCD watch and they can be changed by sliding them on and off.
My grandson is the kind of inquisitive child that likes to see how things work and so far has been able to change the faces himself, but as he has been playing with the watch instead of just wearing it and using it to tell the time, he has pulled on and off the different faces so many times that he has now lost percy, broken James and now only has Thomas and Diesel to wear.
Although it is a well made watch the parts that change are too tempting for a eight year old to just keep one on all day, constantly changing the faces has helped to lose one of the parts and the time has to be reset everytime the face has to be changed.
This isn't the kind of watch that a child can just put on and look at, its a kind of toy come watch that they can break easily or lose parts from. Although it is cheap to buy it is too tempting for them to play with the faces and not use it as a telling the time instrument.
I wouldn't buy another one although if the face is kept on and it's used as a watch to tell the time then it's a good item but the novety of keeping changing the faces is to much for a young child, a nice idea but not a practical timepiece.
Although none of us wear a watch too often, my three year old daughter decided she wanted one after seeing her nan's one day. I don't think she held out much hope of getting one and watches were forgotten about until a few weeks later when Mark came in with this Thomas LCD watch for her. I would have chosen Peppa or a Disney princesses watch, but Mark hasn't quite got his head around the fact that Hollie is a girl!
Anyway, this watch has an LCD display and will also show the date when you press a button on the face of the watch. It has a blue plastic strap which is designed to sort of remind you of train tracks and engine parts, there are plenty of holes in the strap so the watch will fit the wrists of most children. It's quite a soft plastic so is very kind on Hollie's wrist, there has been no rubbing or chaffing even though she's been wearing it for weeks now and for hours at a time!
The watch will be supplied with the Thomas head fitted, and the other three are included in the packaging. Be careful how you open it though as we almost threw Percy in the bin, and that wouldn't have been good news! I assume it was Percy anyway, I know Thomas and Henry but my girls' have never shown much of an interest in Thomas the Tank Engine so I'm not very up on the characters! We had problems with the interchangable heads as Hollie struggles to change them, she's actually quite a dexterous child so I was surprised to see how fiddly this was for her. She was able to pull the head off, but sliding the new one on is quite difficult for children who are really too young to have developed their hand-to-eye co-ordination.
Another problem I have with the watch is the fact that the two buttons on the front are far too sensitive. Sometimes just brushing my fingertips against these buttons will either display the date instead of the time, or change the time completely. This isn't so much of an issue for Hollie as she hasn't much interest in actually telling the time yet, she simply wants to wear the watch as jewellery but I can tell you it bugs the hell out of me.
On the plus side, the different train heads are all good quality and very well made. It's a shame that changing them is so awkward, Hollie has more or less kept to the one head (Thomas) since we bought her the watch and she doesn't show much interest in even attempting to swap them over now. The display is large and clear, although personally I do think you should teach your child how to tell the time on a more traditional clock face rather than numerically. This is down to personal choice however and I shall buy Hollie a more suitable watch when she's grown a bit and will be in more of a position to learn about big hands and little hands.
This watch can really vary in price so it's definitely worth shopping around. On Amazon it's £15, which is an absolute rip off for a cheap plastic kids watch, but if you go to Argos you'll pay around £6.50.
Thomas & Friends Interchangable Head LCD Watch
My nephew is a huge Thomas fan and so when his birthday was coming up we hunted around trying to find something which he had not got and would hopefully last. Among the few things we bought him, we came across this Thomas and Friends LCD watch for around half its usual price at £3.75. A bargain!
The watch in which we bought has a plastic blue strap and comes with four interchangeable watch covers in the shapes of Thomas, Percy, James and Diesel. This is perhaps something my nephew found the best with this watch - forget learning the time, he wanted to change the heads every five minutes! Of course with this feature there is the risk of losing a head which my nephew did only five minutes after receiving the present from us! Luckily poor old Diesel was found in the wrapping paper before we threw it out!
One annoyance with the watch is that after the head has been changed a few times, the LCD clock messes around and so we have to set the time once again. My nephew can not do this, though setting the clock is simple for an adult and rather like most watches of this style.
The watch is very durable and withstands my nephews temper tantrums easily. The only precarious part is the flip up head which flips up to display the LCD time. Although well fastened down, with force this could be broken. The strap is also well made if not a little too plastic-looking. It is a seven hole adjustable strap and sits nicely on a childs wrist.
Although my nephew has not learnt to tell the time from his watch yet, he wears the watch practically all of the time and still, after a couple of months loves changing the heads (and all heads are still present!).
A good buy for a younger child.
My son had this watch for Christmas last year. He likes Thomas the tank engine and so my great aunt bought him this delightful lcd watch which has three interchangable heads.
My son was delighted with this gift. He hought he was really grown up to have a watch of his own. This watch looks really cool. My son loved the fact that he could change the heads himself, as it is really easy to click the head into place.
The three interchangable heads are Thomas the tank engine, percy and James. These characters are very popular on the programme, and therefore my son appeared to be delighted with the choice of heads available.
At first, I was impressed with the look of this watch. It seemed very well designed and of a good quality. However, when I actually got to hold the watch, I was very disappointed with the general cheapness of the materials used. The watch is made from plastic. Although it feels very flimsy and not at all hardwearing. From the outset, I was waiting to hear my son scream 'It's broken' but in fairness it did last a couple of weeks before the strap snapped.
The strap can be adjusted to fit the child's wrist by using the holes in the opposite side of the strap. I found that this offered my son a comfortable and accurate fit. However, this srap is certainly not manufactured in a way that allows a child to constantly take the watch on and off. Which is a tad ridiculous because it should be designed with children in mind.
Another thing that annoyed me, was that the watch did not come in a box but a pre packed plastic container. This left nowhere to store the interchangable faces. So after a week my son was upset that he had misplaced James.
The actual screen of the watch is digital. It is a nice sized face with a clear screen. The numbers are easy to read and My son was able to grasp the concept of telling the time. Which I have to say he loved. However, the novelty soon wore off and he was more intrested in playing with toys than his new watch.
This watch is so lovely in design, but it is seriously lacking in the quality department. I am suprised to learn that this watch retails for around £8. Because apart from the interchangable feature, the watch looks cheap enough to come from a £1 shop.
I for one would not recommend this watch. It is far too expensive for such a cheap and tacky item. I understand that Thomas the tank is a popular character, but I would chug way past the station before stopping to buy this tat.
Our Thomas & Friends Interchangable Head LCD Watch was something we bought for our child as a gift. As a big Thomas The Tank Engine and Friends fan and avid collector of many of the range of toys and products in the range, we thought it would make a nice treat.
The Thomas & Friends Interchangable Head LCD Watch wasn't listed on Dooyoo but as its now been added, I can tell you a bit about it. We bought the watch at £6.99. When we first bought it we thought how bright and attractive it looked and how it would make a reasonably nice gift to give.
The fun part about the watch that our child liked very much, is the fact that you can easily change the look of it. The Thomas & Friends Interchangable Head LCD Watch is just that, as it comes with a set of extra head/ facia covers that can be changed depending on the mood of the wearer.
We found our child was very happy with the idea that one day the Thomas face could be on and the next day another character could replace it. The watch we had came with a set of three of these replacement covers, as well as the Thomas one which was on it when we bought it.
The other character faces you can choose from are Percy: who is a very friendly little green engine, James the red engine: who is prone to thinking he is a cut above some of the other engines and Diesel the black coloured naughty and bad tempered diesel powered engine. So a different character face for a child to pick to have swapped on to the watch from day to day.
Each of the inter changeable covers can be used on the same body and this makes the watch more versatile and gives a less static look to it. The materials used for the watch are of an average quality. We have found we had to help our child to change the watch face and also to set the LDC display to the correct time. We often have had to reset it after its been fiddled with, but this is easy enough to reset to the correct time for an adult.
The watch is made from a light plastic based material and the strap is very light to the touch and around 1.5cms wide, its also somewhat flexible. The actual watch lid can be flipped up to check the time when needed and our child sometimes used the watch as an intercom type thing, to talk into when role playing.
The watch strap is size adjustable, as it has a series of seven holes through which you can adjust the strap length to fit. The look of the watch is very bright and the little watch characters do give the watch a measure of charm, even if its a plasticy charm. As we bought the watch more for our child to wear something that complimented a love of all things Thomas the Tank Engine it does the job.
As something to kick start being able to tell the time, I feel the watch does function reasonably in that area, as long as your child already has some knowledge of clocks and time. If you wanted something that was more geared towards learning how to tell the time from scratch, I would suggest a more traditional dial based watch.
To give the The Thomas & Friends Interchangable Head LCD Watch a rating I have to say it gets a respectable 3 stars. It scored highly with us, for being something that is fun to wear with the interchangeable characters, but lost a few stars for quality.
The watch is very plasticy and this gives it a very limited life span which is perhaps more suited to a younger child. This makes the watch more of a short lived fashion and favour item than something to give as a long lasting gift. I would still recommend it as it has been something our child has enjoyed having.
