Brita Aluna Water Filter
Advantages: Nice idea in theory
Disadvantages: Doesn't seem to do the job for us
Drinking water from the tap isn't really the done thing to do in Warsaw, supposedly there's a great deal of dodgy substances in the water supply and the locals steer clear of it, capital city folk tend to be a fussy bunch though and it's never bothered me nor my wife.
Each neighbourhood has a water fountain where you can fill up but I personally have never got round to doing it, traipsing around with a few 5 litre bottles in -20 or so doesn't really appeal and I can never be bothered during the other seasons either. Large bottles of water are fairly cheap in the shops too but the logistical aspect and my laziness don't seem to combine well.
Certain members of my wife's family have a knack of buying things that they'd use and probably expect we would too. The Brita Aluna XL is one such product. It looks rather sleek, particularly when new and the idea of filtering out all the dodgy substances is not something I'm against, I'd heard various people comment that this product adds a fresh and tasty mineral flavour to your water but to be honest I couldn't notice a single difference at all.
Fitting the Maxtra cartridge seems fairly simple (although I'm not convinced I've done it correctly), I followed the instructions though which involved opening it out of its packet and sort of pushing it in to the groove at the bottom, so that it acts as a filter, the water seems to seep through rather quickly though and if you fill it up too much, it seems to come back through the filter.
All a bit suspicious, there's also an electronic memo on the top which supposedly tlls you when the cartridge needs replacing and updates you on levels of various stuff, my description of this part is a bit vague because it doesn't seem to actually work. Actually I can't work out how it would know what's going on in the filter because it doesn't seem at all connected, I've searched for info on how to get the memo to work but haven't had any luck.
Obviously this appliance can be kept in the fridge which ensures a cold supply of water, sticking a jug in the fridge would have the same effect though and would probably be quite a bit cheaper.
Summary: Seems to complicated too get working.
