Brita Aluna Water Filter
Advantages: Filters water, fits in fridge, a returned gift.
Disadvantages: Need to buy replacement cartridges regularly, heavy when full.
I have had a Brita water filter jug for many years. I have been thoroughly happy with it, so when my mother-in-law fell ill earlier in the year with stomach and kidney problems I decided to buy her a Brita water filter to encourage her to drink more water.
As is the way with my mother-in-law she thanked me for the jug and then put it in the cupboard never to see the light of day, after a few months I asked her how she was getting on with the jug, she declared that it was of no use to her and gave it back to me in brand new condition. So I replaced my tired old jug with the sparkly new one.
The water filter jug I purchased was the Brita Aluna Cool White Water Filter Jug; I purchased mine from Morrison for less than £10. The same jug can currently be purchased from amazon.co.uk for £10.99 including free delivery.
The water filter jug comes with a Maxtra Filter Cartridge to get you going; these can also be brought separately for around £10 for a pack of four.
When you get the jug out the box it needs a wash with warm soapy water to freshen it up. Once the jug and its liner and lid are clean you need to prepare the Maxtra cartridge, this is easy to do, just remove it from its packaging and immerse it in a jug full of cold water, give it a good shake to dislodge any water bubbles. Then slot it in to the liner of the filter jug, it should click snugly into place, then put the liner in the jug and fill the liner to the brim with fresh cold water, allow the water to "filter" through the cartridge and then discard it, repeat this process once more. Once this is done you can fill the jug with fresh cold water and then allow it to "filter" ready for when you want to make a hot or cold drink of just a glass of water.
When I got the jug out the box I was a little disappointed to see that I had to remove the whole lid to fill it up, my previous jug had flip up compartment in the lid to fill it through. Now that I have been using the jug for a couple of weeks I find it much more convenient to remove the lid as I regularly used to drench myself with the old lid.
Once again the filter jug comes with the electronic cartridge exchange indicator, this is a little digital display that is embedded into the lid of the jug and indicates when the filter needs replacing. When you insert a new cartridge you need to reset the indicator, this is done by holding down the little button on the indicator till it indicates full again. The electronic display counts down four weeks as this is the recommended amount of time you should allow between replacing cartridges.
I usually stick to the four week schedule, but if my water stops tasting fresh I will change the cartridge earlier, and if I forget to buy new cartridges I will leave an old one in till I reorder some more.
The jug and liner is dish washer safe but the lid is not, I usually hand wash the lid and the digital display survives it.
The liner of the jug is solid white and therefore I can not see how much water is in the top part waiting to be filtered, but common sense tells me that if nothing is dripping from the top into the bottom then the top needs filling up. I have not timed the time it takes to filter the water but in all honesty it does not take long, and as long as people are kind enough to refill it after each use (hem hem!!) you will always have freshly filtered water on tap, or should I say in jug.
The jug is designed to fit neatly into the door of a regular sized refrigerator and I can confirm that it does this with ease. The jug has a total capacity of 2.4 litres (1.4 litre filtered water capacity) and it can be quite heavy when full. The handle is comfortable to hold and angled nicely for pouring. The height of the jug fits under my tap quite easily but I can imagine that if you had a shallow sink or short taps there could be a bit of a problem with filling the jug.
The lid fits nice and snug and I have had no problems with it popping off at random like my previous jug and drenching my kettle.
My old Brita filter jug was looking a bit tired and the spout cover had fallen off so I was more than happy to use this as a replacement. I like that they have kept the electronic cartridge indicator in the lid so I can use this as a guide as to when the cartridges need changing and I like that the lid lifts off for refilling as this gives me more room to fill the jug and I can see when it is getting full and stop the tap before I suffer splash back.
Over all I am happy with my purchase, despite the fact I brought it as a gift for someone else. I hope it gives me as many happy years service as my previous one which I only stopped using as this new shiny one came my way.
