Speedo SpeedSocket Goggles
Advantages: good fit don't fog up easy to adjust
Disadvantages: initial price
Swimming is one of my favourite past times to relax and re charge and essential for me is a good pair of goggles. As I wear contact lens I prefer a pair of goggles with a good tight seal so I can continue to wear my contact lens in the pool as I would no doubt bump into people otherwise as I am so short sighted. I normally wear Zoggs but earlier in the year when we went away to a hotel I had forgotten my goggles and needed a pair for the pool and these were the only ones they had which would fit me. I remember internally cursing when I bought them as they cost me £16 which I thought was a huge mark up by the hotel but on returning home I saw they retail at similar prices on Amazon. The other thing I found out about them is that these are the goggles worn by Michael Phelps due to their design so I can say they are worn by the best swimmers even if I am not in their league.
The goggles come in several different colour waves mine are a very dark blue almost black with blue lens. They also come in grey and totally dark blue/black.
The speed socket is a low profile goggle which means it is more streamlined and dynamic in the water. Whilst for me as a recreational swimmer this has little to do with the time I can swim a length in, it does mean that I find that when doing front crawl the goggles seem to stay on better. It also means that when I am turning at the ends there is little friction in the water and again the goggles stay on better. This low profile design with its less resistance in the water seems to help keep the goggles in place and with the good seal it gives against my face stops water leaking into the goggles. This means it is perfect for me wearing contact lens as the lack of leaks means I have no issue with losing the lens in the pool.
The goggle lens are shatter resistant now what you do in the water that would cause them to shatter I don't know but I have noticed when they are jostled around in the gym, bag with trainers bottles of water and other items that they haven't cracked unlike some cheaper goggles I had. They have also taken on fewer scratches to the surfaces compared to my normal goggles so they must be more hard wearing.
The lens have UV protection up to 95+ now I only wear these for swimming at my local pool but if you are into outdoor swimming this is a really neat feature that would benefit you.
The lens have anti-fog properties as well now I have used goggles with this feature before and been really disappointed in how they start to fog up after about 4 lengths in my experience. With these goggles I was pleasantly surprised that I can do my standard 20 lengths without a break with only minimal fogging to the lens. I am impressed with this as it means I don't really have to adjust the lenses after several lengths so I am able to keep the pace up of the lengths and stay in a rhythm of swimming which I find better for my concentration and helps me to relax.
They have a hypo-allergenic comfort fit seals which fit lovely against my eye sockets and don't irate or dig into my skin. I occasionally have ring marks where they have been if I have had the strap especially tight but these quickly fade.
The head strap is a double head strap that is adjusted at the rear rather than the side as most goggles. I find this easy to do and I am more than happy with this design. The double strap to the rear actually seems to keep the goggles in place better. I have long hair and don't wear a swimming cap so the double strap fits nicely around my pony tail and keep the goggles in place. Even during the most energetic front crawl or swimming and playing in the pool with my four year old they remain in place.
The goggles are adjusted in the nose bridge by three settings these are very similar to most goggles that I have worn and are high across the nose. I am able to adjust them easily to fit my face and whilst swimming they are comfortable to wear and do not dig into my face in any way.
Overall these goggles are great and I can certainly see why they are recommend by swimming athletes as they are comfortable to wear don't fog up and give you clean lines in the water. They are more expensive than I would normally pay for goggles and I only bought these as they were the only one available at the time. However they are purchase I don't regret and if you are a serious swimmer I would definitely recommend these. I am giving them 4 stars only deduct one for the price or between £13-19 depending on the retailer so do shop around.
