Zoggs Mini Kickboard
Advantages: robust design easy for young children to hold and improve swimming kicks
The Zoggs mini kickboard that I am reviewing is slightly different to the one pictured but the Dooyoo team have advised me to include it in this section.
The mini kickboard that we use with our 3 year old when we go swimming is part of the Zoggy range from Zoggs aimed at young children. The board itself is yellow in colour and measures 27.5cm x 22cm. As with all kickboards it has a curved front I think to help it cut through the water and to the rear of the board it has a curve cut out of it so it is easier to hold in the front of your face to allow you to swim with your face in the water. On the top of the kick board there are various colorful characters that are part of the Zoggs swim school logo's this includes a seal, crab, starfish, turtle and octopus. They all sport various swimming equipment such as goggles, armbands and kickboards to continue the swimming theme. These colorful characters are what attracted my son to choose this kickboard, if your child is a bit older however you may prefer to go for the plain yellow and blue one as pictured on the dooyoo picture. The kickboard itself is made from a nice light dense material that is called EVA and it fits easily into a standard size gym bag without any problems.
The pool test
I should first explain that we currently still use arm bands with our son and the kickboard is use alongside these to help him get used to kicking his legs to move in the water. As with all kickboards this isn't designed to help you float in the water it is there to help improve your swim technique.
The mini kickboard has been designed well for young children and my son finds it an ideal length to hold compared to the adult kickboards at the pool and is able to fit his hands around the sides of the board easily to hold without any problems. Some adult kickboards have holes cut away for the hands to go through to enable you to hold the kickboard. I am glad this board doesn't have this feature as I think for young hands it may mean they get tangled in it and could end up with hurt wrists. With this board my son is able to choose which way he holds it, either at the side or length ways with his forearms resting on the board. He seems at present to alternate between the two but which ever position he chooses he is able to use the board to help propel him through the water as he kicks his legs. At present we are just working on crawling legs and the float works well with this swimming style. I have used the board myself on occasions but find it too short for my forearms to rest on the board comfortably.
The board is also a nice length for my husband or I too place it under our young son's tummy to help him keep his body in a nice horizontal position in the water whilst he practices his swim kicks. The board floats well even with my son laid on it and he seems to like the fact that when this is under his tummy he is able to swim a lot further in a lot less time. I am hoping that he will gradually learn through using the kickboard in this way the correct placement of his body in the water for swimming. The board seems to hold up very well even supporting my son's weight and has now cracks in it from this treatment and floats nicely in the water.
We have had the board now for about 5 months and we generally go swimming once a week and it has shown no signs of being discoloured by the chlorine or any cracks in the surface. There are a few nicks in the EVA at the sides where it has been banged in the gym bag against some water bottles or swim toys but these do not in any way stop it working. The colourful characters that attracted my son to this float are still there as bright and cheerful as the first day so I am very pleased with how well it is holding up under the constant use and battering it takes in the gym bag.
The other way my son likes to use this kickboard is not really swimming but as a float to carry his swimming toys such as Zoggs seals as he has collected them from around the pool. The board acts as a raft for all these animals and toys and he pushes it in front of him and swims to the board and his toys.
I would definitely recommend this kickboard to help young children learn to swim and improve their swim technique with there kicking. It is well made and the colourful characters on the float appeal to young children. The small design is well suited to children learning to swim and enables them to hold the board correctly. The board various in price from £5 currently on Tesco's website to up to £10 in independent retailers so I would advise shopping around.
