Advantages: Limitless photos
Disadvantages: Pricey
I'd been interested in purchasing a digital camera ever since they appeared on the market three or four years ago, however, two factors held me back, firstly the exhorbitant prices, and secondly the picture quality. Im glad to say that over the last year or so, both of these aspects have come forward in leaps and bounds, so I took the plunge and purchased a Kodak DC240 camera, and haven't looked back since. Ok, it may seem pricey, but if you look to the long term, just remember that once you've made the initial outlay, never again do you have to pay film processing costs. In the several months I've owned it, I've taken well over 2000 photographs, so I'd say it's more than paid for itself. The actual camera is very easy to use, just like a standard 35mm camera in fact, the major difference being of course that there is no need to load any film. Instead, any photographs you take are stored on a memory card. A memory card is provided with the camera, mine came with a 16mb capacity card, which roughly translates into 114 pictures at a resolution of 640*480, or 36 pictures at a resolution of 1280*960. The quality of the pictures is also way up with the 35mm standard too, and using the higher resolution can make for some excellent results. In operation terms, it has a standard zoom lens which can be adjusted to your desire. It's then just a case point and click. You can preview the pictures you have taken via a viewfinder on the back of the camera, which shows you the picture once it's taken. You can, if your not happy with the photo, delete it there and then. Once either the memory card is full, or you simply want to take the pictures off the camera, it's a case of connecting the camera to your computer via either a USB or serial port lead, both of which are supplied with the camera, as is the software which allows you to do this. The files are stored as JPG fi
les, and since this is a standard format, you'll have no problems in either you, or your friends viewing them. The camera is powered by 4 aa size rechargeable batteries, and I'd recommend that you carry a spare set with you if your going out for the day, since you'll find yourself taking pictures of anything and everything, since the worry of processing costs has been removed. In terms of value for money, and the use I've had out of the camera, this has been one of the best purchases I've ever made, and one which I'll be using for a good few more years to come. Jim.
