I actually got this piece of technology given to my dad as a present due to me going away due work so I decided that the cheap and easy way to keep in contact via skype and due to laptop having awful webcams built into them this was the simple solution to a common problem
Although the webcam does come with a package of software which is taking still and ensuring that the webcam works with your computer I was fortunate enough for it just to work instantly with the computer which was lovely. This was a great start but I did start to have problem from then on. The webcams system for attaching the webcam itself to the laptop is very difficult to keep on and works much better on a stand alone computer rather than a laptop.
Once I turned the webcam on I found many more problems so I decided that installing the software provided was the best choice but this really gave me nothing more than comical borders which although being funny still didn't help with the poor quality captured by the 640x480. This was seen with the blurred picture and the pixelated nature. I did find as this webcam didn't have auto focus that a adjustment of the collar on the webcam did improve the quality the picture sightly but there wasn't a major chance.
An additional help that I found was to ensure that the lense was clean with a microfibre cloth but unfortunately that all I personally found helped. So I hope you read this review before buying.
After searching Ebay for a cheap & cheery webcam i came across this Logitech one, with a price tag of £6.99 second hand i thought it would be perfect as i was only using it on my old laptop to take down to my grans so she could skype my uncle in australia :)
When the webcam arrived, i was happy with the how compact & decent the camera looked for the price tag & couldnt wait too take it down too my grans so she could speak face to face with her son.
After a 5 min set up process we were good to go & i was suprised with the quality of the camera it was all in colour and it picked up your movements soo it wasnt like there was long delay. I was impressed it even had built in speakers so you could also talk instead of having to go buy a microphone seperatley.
Ive even found my little neice loves this webcam as she can sit for hours constantly posing as it has a programme on it that you can take pictures from.
I would highly recommend this item to people that dont want to break the bank but want a decent quality webcam for a decent price :)
money well spent
I bought this camera like a lot of people to use on skype. At around £15 average price it's not going to be a top of the range camera, and it's not. But it does the job absolutly fine. It has a USB connection, VGA sensor and a 1.3mp camera capable of picking up 30 frames per second and a built in microphone. Just to warn you though it is only compatible with windows 7, vista and XP in case you do have 95 in which case what are you doing with your life?
The quality isn't poor but as i expected it's by no means good. My face can be seen clearly but if i am moving around too much the camera struggles to keep up and it will freeze, sometimes for a few seconds and once froze up all together. The sound quality is pretty awful to be honestn but not so bad that you cannot be understood. It doesn't have any installation proccess though. Its just plug in and go.
If your looking for a top of the range camera then look else where and spend more money but if, like me you just want a low budget camera that will do the job, this is for you. I have never tested any webcams of this in this price range before so i don't know what the competition is like but this cameras flaws can be ignored considering the price really.
I bought the logitech c160 webcam last April in order to keep in touch with my sister in manilla via skype. I managed to buy it for £10 from ebay which was a bargain at the time. The appearance is decent, its not too big and can be clipped onto laptop or desktop screens easily. Its really easy to set up and to install, it lasts long without giving any problems what so ever. Its got a snap shot button located on the top of the webcam, the webcam is wired and doesnt zoom in.
The picture quality is great, the colours are vibrant and clear. Its obviously not hd camera but will do the job of video chatting. The camera is also fast, it shows live video without much delay. The microphone included is good but not great, it has a fuzzy sound in the backround so I recommend buying a seperate microphone(which is only about £5). It sits perfectly on top of a LCD monitor, the clip snaps on perfectly on my monitor and even laptops.
Coming from logitech theres no doubt that this is reliable and made of great quality. If your looking for a good webcam on a tight budget then I strongly urge you to give this a go, you wont regret it!
Thanks for reading, hope this helps.
I decided to look into buying a new camera after my old one broke. I spent a fair amount of time researching and after reading alot of good reviews for it, i decided to purchase this one.. the Logitech C160. I brought mine from amazon for £11.99 which is a bargin price.
The first reason I had for deciding to purchase this webcamrather than any of the others I had looked at was that it stated it was compatiable with windows xp or above, so knew it would work well with my computer. The webcam was incrediblyeasy to set up and even if you did find you were struggling, it comes with a good set of instructions to follow. The webcam has a clip on it which enables you to clip it nicely on to your LCD monitor or laptop.
To install the webcam theres a wire to plug it in to your usb port however the wire isn't very long so this can cause a problem . Also I found I had to spend ages trying to focus the camera myself manually so if you don't want to spend time doing that i'd suggest maybe going for one of the more expensive webcams which have auto-focus.
The Webcams video capture resolution is 640 x 480 and the picture capture is 1.3 megaixels which is fairly decent for a low cost webcam. It also has a built in microphone which is great if you like to use skype or msn to do videos calls with people, the fact its built in also saves you needing to fork out for a seperate microphone.
I did read alot of bad reviews about this camera and about how laggy and blurry it is for video calls etc.. however i have had no problems with it and think this more depends on what sort of internet connection and line you have which i find is the same with any webcam.
overall i would definitly recommend this webcam :)
I bought this Logictech Webcam around about 3 months after purchasing it on Amazon for £14.99. I have been very impressed with it. The web cam was easy to set up and I have been impressed with the picture and sound quality. Logitech has a good reputation at producing good peripherals and this web cam is no different. This particular model I would say is more of a budget model and it offers good value for money.
The resolution you get with this model is 640 x 480, which is a fairly high resolution. This is the resolution for video capture. If you are taking pictures with the webcam, it acts as a 1.3 megapixel. This is below average on what you would find on most smart phones these days. There is a built in microphone and there is a manual focus.
According to the manufacturer, the webcam can be used with Windows XP or above.
~Installation & Usage~
As previously stated the webcam was easy to set up. The design allows for the webcam to clip nicely on to the top of an LCD monitor. However, if you don't have a LCD screen and have a laptop for example, the clip folds away to act as a stand that you can sit on a table. The manufacturer claims that it can also be used with a laptop monitor, but from person experience this doesn't work well.
The web cam is wired, and you simply plug the wire into a USB port. The webcam supports both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0. The device is essentially plug and play and the software that comes with the camera opens up some more advanced features.
One of the main draw backs I have found with this model is that you have to manually focus the camera yourself. Many of the higher priced cameras will now be auto-focus. I have also found that the web cam needs to be used where the light conditions are good and fairly bright.
This is a good webcam to use if you are on a budget or if it's only for occasional use. You should not expect to get HD quality images from this webcam, it's more for using over Skype or Windows Live when chatting with family or friends.
As with any type of streaming of video over the Internet, your broadband connections often dictates how good a quality of picture and sound you receive and the manufacturer suggests a minimum of 265Kbps upload speed and I would agree.
I have found that the picture and sound can sometime break up, but I have only found this at peak times, for examples 8pm on a Wednesday evening. I do think this has more to do with my Internet Service Provider rather than the webcam itself.
I had a Microsoft Lifecam and it wasn't working well with Windows 7, so when out and about I saw PCWorld offering 3 Logitech products for £30, so I bought one. Now I do not use webcams much, however as an IT person I believe I should always be prepared just in case. Also I do have a few projects where a webcam is proving useful.
The main projects I have been doing are a few self-recordings for video lessons I have been creating as well as taking pictures for a few mini stop frame animations. While it is great for recording quick videos the picture side I wont bother with any further due to the fact I use a Digital SLR which has more features for zoom, focus and quality, however for a new entry into stop frame animation with integrated software this camera does work well.
The camera connects to the PC through USB and comes with a Driver CD that installs the drivers and Logitech webcam software. The Logitech software lets you connect to other Logitech users through a Logitech server. It also allows you to use some special effects and configure the camera.
The webcam is a basic entry model 1.3MP VGA camera. So it keeps the files small which is ideal for transfer through the net. It has a built in microphone so you don't need a separate device for that. It has a manual focus which means you will need to adjust it as you use it, however there is not autolight correction.

It will clip to the top of a standard LCD monitor

This is a great budget webcam that will do most things any body would need a webcam to do, however if you are after slightly more quality look at the C200 series. I would always say Logitech produce high quality computer equipment, so I would definitely stay with this brand if you are looking for a webcam.
I bought the Logitech Webcam C160 before a trip to the US so I could stay in touch with loved ones while abroad. I was, and still am, a complete novice at webcams and Skype. Logitech stuck in my head as a reputable brand and seeing as the majority of the webcams at my local PC World were Logitech I saw no reason not to get one!
£20 pounds in a brick and mortar shop, £14.46 online (at time of writing), the C160 is not an expensive investment. It is one of the more lower end Logitech cameras, with a resolution of 640x480 pixels. In laymans terms that's about the same as your standard definition TV at home more or less. Despite all the hype of HDTV, 720p and 1080i, there are plenty of pixels to have a normal conversation.
The camera comes with the standard selection of Logitech software which allows you to use the camera as a camcorder or to take still photos. It's a nice touch but it's kind of useless seeing as how low the resolution is (your camera phone should be better!). Installation is a breeze, plug the camera in and run the installation CD and you should be up and running within minutes.
Attaching the webcam to your computer is simplicity itself, just adjust the intuitive bracket to fit the width of your laptop screen and you're away. This is a good feature really as you can attach the camera to a lot of other things as well, even just let it sit on the floor.
I already had SKYPE installed on my machine and it instantly recognised the C160, both the video input and the microphone. Making a video call is simple through skype and the quality of the C160 is great. I was expecting a grainy image of myself to appear but infact it was quite clean and perfectly legible for conversation.
The microphone on top works very well in conversation. I have a built in microphone in my car radio which is almost useless so I was expecting the worst. Fortunately this works brilliantly and my voice sounded clear and crisp on the other end.
As for build quality, it is average. The plastic feels quite flimsy and easily breakable. Some might say that this is an inherent problem with plastic components but I own several Integral products that feel like a Rolls Royce in comparison. A funny side note, a friend stood on the camera recently and it broke cleanly in half. I wasn't expecting it to have no problems whatsoever but just be warned, keep it off the ground!
Overall well worth the purchase as you get far more than the £14.46 would suggest.
When i had my old laptop, i didn't have the convenience of a webcam built into the computer, and as i had recently started uni at this point, i discovered Skype, which seemed perfect to keep in touch with all my friends and family.....so for Skype, i needed a webcam. This webcam can be picked up anywhere between around £8 and £20 depending on where you look to buy it, this was of course perfect for me as i didn't have a lot of money to spend on such things being a student and such.
So i ordered it online and a few weeks later it came, it was in a small box, i opened it and had a look, and it seemed extremely easy to set up, took me almost no time at all, when i first started using it the quality didn't seem that great, but if you just play around with the brightness, contrast and colour levels a bit you will end up with clear bright video images, perfect for skype! It will clip on to the screen of your computer with no fuss, and has a built in microphone so you dont have to worry about trying to find one of those. The sound quality is very good, and clear, this is everything you want in a webcam for just under £10, i cant understand why people spend so much money on these when one like this is just perfect.
The quality of this camera is a lot more than you would expect from a product that cost so little, i have not a bad word to say about it. Complete with a snapshot button for taking photos, and all the cables needed in the box, this webcam is simple but faultless and perfect. A cheap, easy to use webcam which performs all the functions you could possibly need to a good standard. I actually still have this webcam despite having a camera built into my current laptop, and its still in full working order, ive had it for around 2 years.
For the price of around £10+, you can't really go wrong with this fantastic little webcam. I only wanted a cheap webcam for chatting with family and friends over Skype, therefore for the low cost that I paid for this, I wasn't expecting much at all. As long as I was visible, I was happy.
Fortunately, for what I did pay, I was very happy. This webcam has a resolution of 640x480, therefore the quality is actually quite good. When installing the webcam, there are a number of programs on offer from Logitech, giving you the ability to record videos etc. It is possible to alter the contrast/brightness settings of this webcam, therefore allowing you to adapt it to your monitor. My monitor is particularly bright, therefore the webcam was fine the way it was installed.
Aside from the video quality being good, there is also an in-built webcam. The sound quality from this is actually quite good, as I wasn't expecting it to be. This means that I can chat online without the need for a separate microphone, making life a whole lot easier.
The webcam is attached using a standard USB 2.0 socket, and I believe it is compatible with most modern operating systems. I have Windows 7 and it installed with no problems.
Overall, this is a great webcam for a very low price!
We use this webcam at work for all our conferencing at work and after a very quick and easy installation the product
i was making my first Skype call within a matter of minutes
The camera appears to be a good quality and i have never had any issues with either the audio or video quality
This product is also quite hardwearing as i have dropped it a few times and there doesn't appear to be any damage
Installation is easy and windows will install any necessary drives it also works with older ubs 1 as well as the newer PCs
This webcam will work any VOIP software and should give you years of use if you look after the camera properly
In conclusion this product offers really good value for money and works very well
The software that is bundled with the camera is very easy to use and there are some good effects that are fun to play with
I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to replace there camera or who is looking into getting into VOIP
This product offers good value for money its definitely worth investigating
The logitech brand are a good make that I have bought from and trust. I had a logitech web cam for use with a desk top set up and it was fine for me. I think it was a good camera that was easy to use and cheap to buy.
The web cam is very useful and it has a built in mic for a clear sound pick up when its being used and that was a useful feature I was impressed with. I didn't have sound problems when using the web cam. It didn't pick up a lot of interference or back ground noise and think it worked well for me.
The design was cool and was not too big to put it in the right place when I used it. I had to get the angle right and that took a bit of time. That and the clip was the only real thing that I had to spend a bit of time on really. The clip was a bit awkward to fit and that took a while. When I got that sorted it was fine for me.
The web cam worked in full colour and that can be great for people who are seeing your image. It can take pictures as well and they are ok but only manage a tiny 1.3 mp that is lacking for a very good quality picture. Even mobile phones of the most basic type can take betters pictures.
The web cam can work with skype, windows live messenger and a few others. I didn't try the others but I know it was compatible with a few more. I can't remember which others they were now.
The web cam will work with a windows set up with no worries and I think it had a 2 year guarantee when I had mine. I would recommend the web cam because it works well. It was a good choice but I think the clip fitting for the web cam is a bit awkward and that is a small thing I didn't like.
** Logitech Webcam C160 **
With family living abroad we decided it would be a good idea to buy a webcam to keep in touch. We where already using the program Skype and they already had a webcam so it was not really a difficult decision to take. Since we where only planning it to use it for this purpose we didn't want to spend to much money on it and when I saw this Logitech webcam for 12 pounds I really didn't think we could go wrong by it.
For the 12 pounds we paid the webcam turned out even better then we thought I would be. First of all the webcam is very easy to set up and to use. We have windows 7 and windows recognised the webcam and within the minute we could use the webcam. You have a disk with programs of Logitech that you can install if you want to record videos. Like I said we use Skype and the webcam works right away with Skype. It was really easy to do luckily because I'm not that good with computers.
The webcam has an screen resolution of 640 by 480 and I think it's really good. The picture looks really bright and colourful and is better then I thought it would be. You can adjust the screen quality if you are not happy with the brightness. The webcam comes with a built in microphone which saves the hassle of buying a separate one. I read that it reduces background noise and I have to say it sounds really good and sharp. The other people can hear me really good.
I'm really impressed with the webcam from the ability to attach it to the screen to the clear picture while you are using the webcam. The sound is really good and it has been a real joy to Skype with our family. You can also takes pictures with the webcam so that's also fun. Since it was only 12 pounds I really didn't expect this kind of quality and we are really happy with it.
Based on previous positive experiences with the Logitech brand whenever I am seeking a new gadget or gizmo for my laptop or gaming devices its one of the brands that I look too first. Sure enough then when seeking to buy a new web cam last month due to the expense of having the inbuilt laptop one repaired, it was Logitech who I turned to and this C160 Webcam.
Now my webcam doesn't get a great deal of use but I like having one due to having friends and family in far away places and they also come in handy for taking still images for social networking sites and other such functions.
One of the appeals of this item, other than the brand name, is the fact that it works in conjunction with Logitech Vid HD which, providing the person viewing your camera has a HD monitor works perfectly. Since I got this my main family member who I talk to asked me to get one and send one over and now we can see each other in crisp HD and the quality is stunning. Far better than standard webcams and even I was surprised. Its not as HD as say your TV is but Id be surprised if it didn't impress you. Even without HD though the Cam gives a clear image which is the basis of a good webcam.
From the box then, it is easy to set up and grips firmly into place on top of the monitor or laptop screen. The grip is tight, unlike some I have used, and it stays firmly in place even with little knocks here and there. It looks very stylish in its round, jet black colouring. Setting it up is very very simple and even computer novices will be up and running within minutes if not seconds. Additionally you do not have to attach it to the screen as it comes with a stand for desktops etc
The camera also has a built in mic with a very useful and efficient noise reducer which I have found actually reduced noise as oppose to some "noise reducers" which do very little. The mic is clear, effective and consistent and picks up sound in crystal clear tones.
All in all as a package consisting around £15-£20 for simple twice-weekly use this is absolutely ideal with perfect picture, easy set up and a great built in mic...
.....I only wish I had more people to use it with!
