The world of TV is not as glamorous as it's cracked up to be. When I first started as a researcher, there were three people in a film crew. Now you're expected to film it all yourself. Even if, like me, you can't tell one end of a camera from the other... The cameras of choice for the amateurs trying to produce video good enough for broadcasting have been Sony's - most docusoaps used to be filmed on the VX1000, and more recently the PD100.
