Back in the days before built-in webcams in laptops were mainstream, I still had a use for standalone webcams. This was quite a while ago now and today I have no use for this webcam whatsoever, however it is nice to have around just in case considering it has been very reliable. I have owned this webcam for about 5 years now and it has never let me down.
From the moment I bought it, setup was as simple as inserting the included CD to install the webcam drivers and then plugging the device in via USB for everything to work from the go! Ever since then, whenever I needed to use the webcam, I could unravel the cable and plug it in for video chatting within seconds.
This webcam, even back when I bought it, was a budget webcam and not the most advanced on the market. Its resolution was pretty low, colouring was poor and the sound was decent at best. However, for general everyday video chatting between friends and family, it did the job perfectly fine and I had no issues with these low specifications. If anything, because of the poor quality output, it aided me when video chatting as my poor internet connection may have struggled with better quality output and therefore made the stream laggy for me and the person I was talking to.
The build of the devices is pretty simple, a large no-slip base with a camera on top connected by a ball joint bearing to enable a change of position. it was basic but once again, it worked!
I got this camera about a year and a half ago, because I didn't have one yet and we got a little girl and my parents in law live in another country and of course liked to see some live footage of their only grandchild! Enjoy reading!
**Information about the camera**
The camera is sold for about 19 Pounds on Amazon.co.uk. I paid a bit less as I got a discount of about 10 percent.
The camera has a built in microphone that has an average quality of sound, it's not that great but good enough for a short overseas conversation.
The resolution of the cam is 640 x 480. The webcam view/image quality is nice but I do have to be in a well lighted room to make sure the image for my parents in law is clear. If it is too dark the camera only shows dark and moving images and an unclear view.
The webcam can be clampt to the laptop or pc, but I never really discovered how to do this. There isn't a special clicking system coming with the cam so that's annoying. I always have to but the camera next to my computer.
You can also make pictures with this cam by clicking the little silver picture on top. Nice quality but not something I use much as I already have a regular digital camera. The webcam can be connected to your pc through a USB cable.
For installation a installation cd is added and installation is simple, just put the cd in your computer and follow the instructions given.
A nice and handy webcam that isn't too expensive but is missing the "clicking"option and thats very annoying while using it. But for 19 Pounds, absolutely good enough for that price. The microphone is really great because it gives you the oppertunity to talk live to your family.
Me and every one from my family members bought this camera an year ago. At first, we did not know what to buy, but after all, the price of this camera is not so high, and we decided to go with it.
The camera itself is ideal for both flat and non-flat displays and can even be attached to notebook displays. It has a "quick shot" button, that will take a picture of you and save it within a snap. It features thirty frames per second, although it was not so smoothly going when we are using it in skype , it is still a good investment. This web camera is still in use after the time we had it.
The setup is really easy, you just insert the disk with the drivers, install, plug-in and you are ready. The first time we tested it we had to adjust the focus a little, and it was great. The snap-shot resolution is one point three mega-pixels, and the hardware resolution is 640x480. Also, it has a built-in microphone, which is handy, because you can speak to your friends or family while talking from distance.
This web camera does not support and digital zooming. But my opinion is, that with this prize, you do not need any.
The advantage of this product is that its cheap. If anybody needs a web camera quick, i suggest you go and get this product.
Cheap and reliable!
"Trust" This web camera, if you need one and don not want to spend a lot of money.
So after weeks of my flat mate whinging for a webcam I eventually folded on Saturday afternoon, and walked the 2 or so miles to Asda (my god I hate my flat mate as my legs are still stiff), and this was the only one available. The little sticker next to it had £19.95 written on (which was quite alright, I'd just taken £20 out). Got to the til and bing, "£9.95 please sir", the only time in a shop have I ever said "Are you sure?" and she said yes, definately.
So I trudged all the way back home to give her the bloody thing. Within 5 mins it was installed, and running perfectly fine. For £9.95 the quality blew me away (sure it's not mind blowing, but it was cheap and the image is the same as some webcams twice as costly). She stood it up on the TV and took off all her clothes bit by bit with my sat just feet away, and she has a great body I mean... wow (Ok i made that last bit up, but come on, you were enjoying the idea of it :-P).
Right now back onto serious matters, the frame rate is a maximum of 30 fps (which is rather good, as the eye pics up 20 fps) so if you can get it running at it's maximum it should be 100% smooth. The colour bleeding so far has been un-noticed though the sensitivity does seem a little low (probably down to the way she set it up more than anything). The Design incorporates a brilliant laptop stand (to hook it onto the top with).
One extra feature I'd forgotten to mention is it's ability to take still photo's too, a rather helpful if under-used function.
Right now some bad points theirs no digital zoom, and a slight lack of quality (only to be expected for the price). And the scariest, it's awfully small, and I'm worried already about standing on it or losing it (and the amount I drink means that one or the other is likely to happen >_<). Also no auto focus.
Summary-Great budget webcam but not amazing.
