Disadvantages: Only specialised for HTML , not free any more
*Update at the bottom*
I first came across CuteHTML about 2 years ago and couldn't imagine ever creating a website without it again!
Although I do sometimes use Dreamweaver for initial setting up of tables or to test colour schemes, this handy and free program allows even a novice to set up a website and teach him/herself HTML at the same time!
Its main advantages are the configurable colour scheme that allows you to display different tags in different colours, as well as the tag library that suggests tags to you as soon as you type in the first letter!
I taught myself HTML simply by looking at website source scripts and then trying it for myself using CuteHTML. As soon as you start a tag (for example by typing ' <t ') the software suggests you all possible tags that start with that letter and once you have chosen a tag you get property suggestions like height, width, background etc. The file explorer bar makes it easy to work with several files in the same directory and the tabs at the bottom allow you to easily switch between all open files, indicating altered files by marking the file name in red.
CuteHTML also has a preview button so you can preview your creations in your chosen browser :)
Although it is possible to create a website without any knowledge of HTML, nobody who is serious about web design can rely on code generators like Dreamweaver or FrontPage alone! Having different colours for specific tags also makes it easy to detect any errors in existing files, thus making it an useful companion for above-mentioned programs!
The only downside is that it only includes HTML tags (not ASP, Java etc).
Unlike other cheaper or free HTML editors it is also very stable, so go and download it NOW!
Since I wrote this Op (and last checked out the company's website, http://www.globalscape.com), CuteHTML 2 has come out, which now costs $19-95! Bummer!
ll it is a great program, but if you're looking for a free HTML editor, check out http://www.easyasp.org, where you can download EasyASP - it's free and also features a style sheet editor, an FTP program and EasyData, a database interface (handy with ASP) but is a little less stable and can be a little awkward to handle.
You may however find the earlier version of CuteHTML on a PC Pro disc, I don't know whether they still give it out for free on there but I know that it's been on a few of last year's discs...
Thanks to alain34 for pointing out the new version!
