Advantages: All menu driven, FREE, lots of support and FAQS on the web
Disadvantages: people are just scared to have a go and will pay someone to do it for them
No reviews on this so far, I am surprised.
A couple of years ago I needed a web site set up, and I asked a friend who has had some experience with it and he said he would happily do it for me or he could show me how to do it and then I could make changes as and when I needed to.
Now while I work with computers I had no experience with html, sql or anything else so didn't see how it was going to be possible to teach me but then he explained joomla to me.
At a basic level, you upload this application to your web space and then build you site with joomla. Everything you need to do to your site from then on in can be done through joomla, and done easily. It puts a graphical interface that most windows and Mac users can identify with and navigate with a little trial and error.
Once joomla is installed you just need to find a template you like for your web site (you can make your own from scratch if you are good with photoshop type programs). There are literally thousands of templates available for free (and legally) just by using google. you can make changes to these templates using a graphics package (to add your logo) change the colour scheme etc. You then upload it (via joomla) and your template is done.
Adding pages is just as easy as it's all driven via a very familiar menu system, once into the creation of a page it feels very much like Microsoft word and works in the same way. so you can change fonts, layout etc very easily then click save and it's published to your site.
This isn't where it stops though because as well as free templates there are also free plugins for joomla. These add functionality to your site, so you can add a forum, a gallery, a calander, a news feed, a music player or many many other things.
This application is brilliant for the novices to web building but I have notice many a pro site is now using the application also as once you know the basics a lot can be done but unlike bulding a site using some other program it's all very easy with joomla.
Go on, give it a try.
Summary: Thsi app is fantastic saves you money and gives you a new skill

- 05/12/09 Am currently getting into Joomla for the NPO I work for - there are some fantastic extensions available for it (DHRegister coupled with JEvents is threatening to revolutionise our work as well as J!Research) |
