I have always fridge freezers rather than individuals in my kitchen and with the sudden demise of my LG fridge freezer with built in ice maker; I wasn't sure whether it was a good idea to go down that route again. Either way, I was drawn to the same idea time and again when we visited our local John Lewis and saw this particular model. I had never considered a wine cooler built in before and knew instantly I would love to have this. Only problem was, I had to persuade my other half it was a great idea as it was remarkable more expensive than any other I had seen.
The wine drinker in our house is me and although I don't drink that much, we do tend to order case loads through Laithwaites and the only place to put them all is in the garage. My LG 'American style' fridge freezer was a matt silver colour, like this one and I knew it would fit in beautifully. When you see the John Lewis wine cooler, it has instant appeal, looks very smart and classy and has a glass door for easy viewing. The inside of this is lit with a halogen bulb, which is stunning when the downlights are n under the kitchen units and this provides a lighting them for the room.
The wine cooler part of this fridge freezer hold 39 bottles and chills them to perfection, I like my white wine very cold and this gives just that, except when it's full. I do not doubt its ability to chill the wine but if you space the bottles every 2nd space or don't actually store them on top of each other, then they seem to chill a lot better. Again, this could be personal preference and some people, like my brother in law, like their wine a little warmer. The shelves for storage slope so this apparently is the best way to store the wine for perfect drinking, Im not too sure I have ever noticed this as I have always stored my wine standing in the past. These shelves are wooden and add to the appeal of the fridge freezer as they look very elegant.
The fridge itself has 6 glass shelves for storage and is slightly larger than my last fridge, and these are easily cleaned by taking out. I wash these in warm soapy water as they don't fit in the dishwasher and I'm not too sure if they should go in there anyway. The door holds 5 shelves for easy standing of bottle etc. and the only down side really is that lager water bottles topple on the bottom shelf and can fly out if you are not careful. There is a vegetable drawer in the bottom and this is easy to pull out, the only drawer back here is that I am used to a salad drawer also but just use on of the shelves for this. There is also a compartment for dairy which I don't use for that purpose, I find cheeses don't stay fresh in these so tend to store in plastic sealed boxes and use the closed compartment for chillies and garlic and this keeps them lovely and fresh for a week or two.
The freezer compartment is frost free and I am happy to say this is actually the case, my other freezer was supposed to be also but it didn't tend to work too well. There are 4 drawers for freezing and this seems to be more than enough for our family needs, they are transparent which enables selection easier, so again that's always a good thing. When we first load this, the fast freeze facility is excellent and as it says, fast!
The whole fridge freezer is quiet when on and is absolutely stunning to look at, we have so many compliments about it. Its washes down nicely on the doors and because it's the matt finish there are never usually finger prints on it. I want this fridge freezer to last forever but I know that when the day comes for a change, Im sure there will be equally good fridge freezers on the market at a slightly better price than this. It is an expensive item but for me its worth every penny, for some a little too extravagant.
I had come to the conclusion that a fridge is one of those things that no matter how big it was there was never going to be room for everything. This has changed my mind.
I admit that i was drawn to this purchase by the looks. I know this is dangerous but it was backed up by the reviews i read so i went for it!
I previously had an american style fridge freezer and found that a full length freezer was too big and often things went unnoticed for weeks months and sometimes even years at a time. The clever integration of a bottle cooler is excellent. It is motoriously hard to store botles in a traditional frdge but this solves that.
The design is sleek and there is no wasted space on ice machines this means that the space you see is what you get. The fridge has a variety of stainless steel attachments that can be moved around to suit your needs and with an adjustable temperature setting it refrigerates equally as well in summer as in winter.
its 162 litre fridge capacity provides enough space to ensure that it is never over full! It also has a low energy consumption and therfore a good 'B' energy rating. The fridge is also free of CFC gases which makes the fridge friendly to the environment.
The freezer has an automatic defrost so you dont suffer from icing up as is a problem with many models. It has 4 removable draws which makes it very straight forward to pack and unpack ypur items. For those people that freeze a lot of fresh food then it is useful to note that there is a 'quick freeze' option which speeds up the frezzing process and ensuring that a minimum amount of food quality is lost.
In the fridge section I have found that the salad compartment keeps sald fresh and crisp for well over a week which makes it easier to plan you menus for the week. This is helped by their super cooling circulation system. The rest of the frige consists of 6 glass shelves that easily wipe clean. one of these shelves splits into 2 meaning that you can easilly accomadate taller items such as fizzy pop in an upright manner rather than on their sides.
The wine cooler is constructed out of specially treated K glass. The thinking behind this is that it protects the bottled items from infrared and ultraviolet rays.
The running noise is virtually non existant, a very slight hum is eveident if you listen very carefully.
Overall a good looking, classy addition to my kitchen. Highly recomended.
The fridge still makes me go wow. Sadly I'm temporarily renting and it stands as the focal point of the kitchen, but when I move back into my house it'll stand nicely amongst the new kitchen (I hope).
I decided to go for a stand alone f/freezer rather than an integrated as I had trouble with appliances in my last kitchen and was unable to match up the front for their replacements.
All aspects of the fridge are good, I love the wine cooler so much, it's my first and I just love it. For parties it's great I just stock it with that which is on offer (up to 40 bottles I think) and leave the more treasured bottle in a rack elsewhere.
I like having the freeze below, some of the other side-by-side with full height freezers made me think I'd put things in the top draws and never see them again.
As with all stainless steel bits and pieces they collect finger marks but its a small compromise. Another bonus: the manual tells me it's free of CFC gases, the fridge is environmentally sound, with 'A' rating for energy consumption! That's good to know.
