Caliterra - Tributo Malbec
Advantages: Wonderful colour, nice packaging
Disadvantages: Flavouring isn't true malbec and thus not to my taste
Malbec is one of my favourite wines, heady, heavy and a perfect accompaniment to any dark meat meal, it is a wonderful grape and definitely worth checking out, during a recent order from Slurp we bought a limited edition 2009 bottle for £14.50.
Unlike most Malbec which comes from Argentina, this comes from Chile which is generally more famous for its white wine from the Colhagua Valley, it is 14% alcohol and has a heady flavour, too many bottles of this would leave you with an awful hangover but a couple of large glasses is the perfect accompaniment to a meal.
The wine is a combination of 60% Carménère and 40% Malbec, it means that it has the dry, almost chocolatey flavour of malbec with tones of wood, tobacco and spice, allied to a certain sweetness. The combination doesn't work for me in the same way other malbec's do, it takes away from the combination I generally enjoy so much and dillutes the stronger spicy elements of true malbec.
We drank our bottle with a spicy beef stew and it accompanied it well, but for the price I had expected much more and could have got a cheaper Malbec which suited my own tastes better at my local supermarket.
This wine would go perfectly with most meats or as an after dinner apperitif, it is bustling with flavours (although the sweeter elements of this wine aren't ones I would try again), it has a wonderful dark red colour, almost browny red, the bottle is fine, gold top, short description of the wine and vineyard with a picture of a vine, however it wasn't for me, despite it's clear quality.
The wine is complex and deserves trying but it is expensive and doesn't provide great value for me there are bottles for £4-£5 less that offer truer variations on the Malbec flavour that I will be returning to in the future. It is also not easy to find we only hazarded upon it whilst making our regular order through a trusted supplier, there don't appear to be many other outlets for the wine in the UK currently.
