In Trieste, in 1884, a Dalmatian called Lionello Stock and his partner Carlo Camis decided to open a small steam distillery. The premises were on the outskirts of Trieste, in Barcola. The gentle slopes sheltered against the strong seasonal winds (Trieste's famous bora) made this area perfect for grapes. The two entrepreneurs were convinced that a distilled version of the excellent local wines would be a success.
