A few years ago I bought my husband a gilet/vest from The North Face range and he raves about it, and wears it in both summer and winter. He was continually telling me that I should get one as well, and last summer for my birthday, he bought me my own vest from The North Face range, which was ideal as we had a few days camping during our summer holiday, so it was a great place to try it out. The thing that had always put me off getting my own vest before was that I often found the ladies versions to be ill fitting and would make you look a lot bigger than your actual shape. When my husband read about The North Face Nuptse Vests that had been newly designed with a more flattering shapely fit, he knew I would like it, and he was right.
This Nupste Vest from THe North Face is available in a range of colours, but my husband bought me mine in pink, which was probably the one that I would have selected anyhow. This vest is downfilled (700 fill goose down) and aims to give that all important chest insulation which is needed in winter and in summer when outdoor camping for example. My husband always raved about how light his vest was, but at the same time extremely warm, trapping his body heat, and the minute I put mine on, I could see what he meant. THere is little weight to the vest, meaning you don't feel you have heavy clothing on, yet the heat that is created is brilliant, especially for someone who feels the cold like me.
THere are two side pockets on the vest and these are of a decent size to slip your hands in, in cold conditions, or simply to put in keys etc. In the summer when I used this in the evening whilst camping, I was able to store my headtorch easily. The other great thing about this vest, is that if you are travelling, this really does fold down compactly, which is very handy and means you have an extra layer that doesn't take up a lot of room in your luggage. There is also a high neck in this vest which is nice as the months get colder, and my pink vest is lined with a deep purple, which actually makes it even prettier when open.
Another feature of this vest is that on the shoulder area there is a double layer taffeta which is designed to protect the vest against rucksack use etc.
It is worth pointing out that this is not a cheap item of clothing and like anything from THe North Face range, you pay for the quality. This vest retails at around £120 though depending on the colour there are offers at times. My husband got mine in Cotwold Outdoors as he benefits from the discount scheme there. To be honest, I think it is worth every penny.
I have had this vest now since the summer time and it has definitely be used a lot. Whilst camping, I used it as the evening got colder and it really did keep me warm and cosy, and I especially appreciated it when I was walking to and from the toilet block before bed and in the morning. Apart from the heat element, this vest is beautifully fitted making it very feminine and I love the pink colour. It goes with anything and is easily packed. As the Autumn came, I would have worn mine when out a walk and found due to the down filling, it was ideal for that time of the year, keeping me very warm. Now that we are in the heart of the winter, I would still wear it on a milder day, and certainly round the house if I was feeling cold as well as being another layer on a really cold day, so all in all, this really is ideal for all year round. I can't recommend this vest highly enough and despite the high price tag, the quality and heat it provides you with, mean its money well spent.
