      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Overview
This wireless device is aimed at small office network but can also be used in home environment. It has a good security and it’s easy to use. You can use it’s integrated manageable feature trough your browser (HTTP). Backward compatibility allows older 802.11b devices to connect to this AP (since they both use 2.4GHz frequency). This “mixed mode” settings which allows you to use g and b modulation. This can slow down the unit, so you will get best results by using only g-devices.
The documentation for this device can be more helpful since some specific configuration can make you a problem, especially if you’re inexperienced user.

      Reliability
This units heats up more than is usual. This should not be such a problem if the device is running in relatively colder environment, but it may get overheated in high-temperature environments in which case one cooler should solve that problem.

      Troughput
Maximum speed of the device is 54Mbit in 802.11g mode which is up to 25MBit in the idel real world. Transfer speed depends on many different factors like data reflection, optical blocks, interference of the other 2.4Ghz devices, etc… In the building-like environment don’t expect this unit to have more than 50 meters range in best case (it’s specified range of 100 meters in best case environment).

Dynamic Rate Shifting and Clear Channel Select
Dynamic Rate Shifting allows dynamically change of transmit speed by reducing it. If you’ve got a lot of interference wireless communication speedand reliability can be drop drastically. By lowering the rate you can have more stable and reliable communication.
Clear Channel Select automatically select best channel that has less traffic and better signal. This spares you a trouble configuring it and trying to set the unit to work more efficiently.

      Security
Device supports advanced 256-bit WPA (Wireless Protected Access) encryption as well as 40/64- and 128-bit shared-key WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) encryption. By using this backward-compatibility mode your security gets lower, especially by using 40-bit WEP encryption which is a pretty much easy to crack nowdays. WPA encryption combines the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) and 802.1x authentication to thwart eavesdroppers by periodically generating a unique encryption key for each client.
Broadcast SSID can be turned off to prevent malicious users to gain access to your network by discovering your device. MAC filtering is another security feature that will filter network device which is not allowed to access this access point.
Firmware itself has one bug that allows attacker to bypass authentication system. Full text can be found here: http://www.security.nnov.ru/docs7648.html. Newer firmwares has this bug removed but if you have old firmware please download new ones from 3com's site http://www.3com.com/.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Well, certainly a very interesting product - it incorporates an inbuilt ADSL modem with wireless access point - perfect for home use.

        Size:
The size of this access point really shocked me - it was hardly even the size of a video cassette! On the back it has two fully adjustable antennae that can be moved depending on your selected location. All of the ports are hidden on the back of the unit, and on the front are 8 unimposing lights - 4 for status, and the other 4 for LAN connection status. The unit itself is white, with a small 3com logo on the side. It is, all in all, a fairly attractive thing.

        Manual/Support:
The manual comes folded up, and expands out into a huge piece of paper, with about 6 steps. The instructions for set up are clear and concise, and, everything going accprding to plan, you should have the whole unit set up in about 10 minutes. I at present have had no need to contact technical support, but all of the numbers are provided clearly in amongst the documentation.

        Set up:
After plugging in the ADSL line, the power cable, and the LAN line that is connected to your computer (Note - you must have a LAN card installed for the device to work), you just turn on the computer, and everything is up and running - there is not even a driver to be installed. You just follow the instructions in the manual, get onto the internet, follow the easy on screen instructions, and you're away! All of this takes under 10 minutes.

        Wireless Coverage:
The coverage provided by the modem/router is fantastic. In my house, where some of the walls are stone, and well over 1m thick, coverage is still optimal (54 mps per second). Interuptions to coverage are very rare - I was surprised myself just how good the coverage provided was. This router also provides powerful 128bit WPA security - this lets you rest at ease from any concerns you may have had regarding hack attempts. The powerful ADSL modem is always online too - so you no longer have to dial up to connect to the internet.

This does seem like an awfully short review, but I can't really tell you anymore about this item - it is the most 'PLUG AND PLAY' item I have evr come across, and is phenomenally easy to use. Added support is provided on the included disc, incase you lose the manual too - a godsend if your as prone to 'misplacing' things as I am! I think, in summary, that this is probably the best wireless ADSL MODEM ROUTER that you can currently get in the home use price bracket - with amazing coverage, easy set up, and powerful protection of your wireless network. An amazing product!

        Thanks,
