Advantages: Good Signal and speed WHEN CONNECTED
Disadvantages: Hub won't stay connected and BT are not much help.
When I started my new job in January 2009 which was home based I needed to undertake the task of transforming the spare room into a home office. Being office based previously and out on the road a lot I never had home broadband, I just used a portable broadband stick which was enough for what I needed. The spare room had no phone socket or line coming into it so I decided for ease to go to BT without shopping around.
The unlimited Broadband package I signed up for on a 24 month contract gave me the BT Home Hub 2.0 free of charge which I was rather pleased with as you had to pay for it on other packages. A week or so later the Hub turned up. Upon opening the box I was pleased with what I saw the Hub was not as big as I expected has a nice curved front with blue glowing lights to indicate the power, broadband and wireless signals. The unit is black in colour and is pleasing on the eye.
I am afraid to say that the initial feeling of satisfaction did not last for long with hub. The initial set up and connection seemed simple enough and I got all the lights turn blue and once connected to the wireless I got the full strength and a very fast connection, good news I hear you say? Unfortunalty not within about half an hour I had lost connection and could not get it reconnected even using the cables provided. Eventually after an hour or so on the phone to BT, their Indian branch by the sounds of it and the guy on the end of the phone clearly doing his fault diagnosis step by step from a computer screen, we was up and running. I managed to keep connected for the rest of the day but by the next day it had disconnected itself again.
This problem has been going on for the last 18 months. The hub will disconnect, show on my available networks as full strength and either come up with a message saying cannot connect to this hub or it connects without internet connection. I have given up trying to communicate with BT as I struggle to understand their support personnel and end up getting frustrated with them going over and over the same thing which does not help with the call at my expense. I have learnt to live with the problem and if I switch the Hub off at the mains instead of using the reset button it does finally reconnect. This happens at least once a day and is very annoying as part of my job needs the internet and I also use a VPN to connect to a terminal server.
I am already counting the last few weeks until I can move service provider. After reading the other 7 reviews it seems my problem may not be a common one but this does not get a recommendation from me.
Summary: I am glad my contract expires in 3 weeks
