Advantages: Very good without wires.
Disadvantages: The price.
My little D-link is still going after a decent period of testing.
The box contains everything you need to go wireless. As a self confessed technophobe, even I got it installed, although I did require the help of their helpline, which is what they are there for. This kit was bought from PC World for £45.99 but you will get them cheaper elsewhere.Mine was bought for NTL, and it may not be suitable for some networks.
Mimimum system requirements:-
Cable, or DSL Modem with ethernet port.
Computer is useful too, with windows, *MAC or Linus based OS with an installed ethernet adapter.
USB port.
Windows XP/2000/ME/98SE.
Minimum 300 Mhz and 32 Mb of memory.
MAC OS 10.3 & 10.4.
The kit is called a Hi-speed router, it certainly seems fast enough for me. The size of the casing is six inches square, and fairly flat, with a stubby aerial sticking up a few inches. This enables a computer, whether desktop or laptop, to connect to the internet, wirelessly. However there will still be wires to hide, between the modem and the router, plus the charging lead. I am writing this for someone who doesn't know how routers work.
Also in the box is a setup wizard disl, for easy & quick installation, this works very well on XP. There are 13 channels, which is about standard, plus firewall protection, and a status indicator.
The solid construction seems robust, and the body of the router is made from aluminium. I can see this bit of kit lasting many years.
The antenna is integral, and the unit can be positioned on a floor or screwed to a wall, skirting board, or window sill. I didn't fancy mine on show, because it is not very attractive.
There are two CD roms, for installation, plus the cable. the ethernet lead etc. are included of course, so is the power adapter, and the dongle which isn't just a stick you plug in, it also has a cradle on the end of a decent lead.
The manual is on the CD, and like many of them nowadays, it reads like it has been translated from some foreign language.
The advert says this is an easy setup, but not in this case. I had problems with my Philips router, so returned it & started from scratch. I did had to use the helpline, which addressed the problem quickly. The call to the helpline is an 0845 number, so not that bad.
As for the range, I don't have problems, partly because my dongle is on a wandering lead, although it still works OK if behind the PC. The range is than the Philips.
The packaging is very solid, so any chance of this item getting damaged is slim. The box was sealed, as all these products should be.
I do like this router, because it has yet to let me down. It may not be the most attractive router, but then it is not meant for show!
Going wireless never really appealed to me, until I found you can have a PC in any room, or in the garden, no wires, no problem. I am glad I chose it.
