Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter
Advantages: easy to install, reliable, hassle-free online connectivity, no cables!
Disadvantages: expensive (but worth it)
I decided that it would be my best interests to purchase a Microsoft branded unit, rather than a cheaper third party version, and opted for this official Microsoft Xbox 360 N Network Adaptor. The price of this small piece of equipment was staggering, and it RRPs at £60.00. I paid £42.99 for mine from Amazon.co.uk, but I can see that it's dropped a little and is now available for £39.99.
Product description: "High-speed data transmission without cable: With increased speed, range and wireless security features, the Microsoft Xbox 360 wireless-N network adapter is the fastest and most convenient way to connect to Xbox Live. You can download or stream HD movies, popular TV series and games from the Xbox Live Marketplace with 1080p resolution and 5.1 surround sound from anywhere in your home. Features: Seamless and easy linking of Xbox 360 to wireless networks in the new, fast transmission standard 802.11n."
The adaptor itself is quite small and inoffensive in appearance. It has a small solid block that forms the main body, with two antennae connected at the sides that can be positioned to suit the orientation of your Xbox 360. I keep mine laid flat so the wireless adaptor tucks nicely out of sight at the back of the console. Seeing as the adaptor is black I think it's best suited to go with the black consoles, whereas I have one of the older white coloured consoles so it does stand out a little, although it is plugged in at the back so you can't really see it much anyway.
I am a bit of a novice when it comes to setting up electrical items, and usually rope in a man to do it for me. However, the installation was incredibly easy and I was very proud that I was able to accomplish it all by myself! The adaptor fits into a USB port and to start with I needed to use the accompanying installation disc to run through the process. Once I had connected the adaptor and turned the console on, the disc checks for updates and then sorts out the necessary drivers that it needs to run. It found my broadband network and I then had to enter my details and pass codes to complete set up. It required very little interaction from me and after leaving it to finish things off I was done within a matter of a few minutes. After this initial set up there is no need to do anything else with it, other than just leave it plugged in and use it!
The Xbox 360 has loads of online features including streaming movies, downloading games and content, connecting to social media websites, and of course multi-player online gaming! I have used several of these features and every time I need to use the online functionality I have been given a smooth, problem-free experience. It loads things incredibly quickly, and there has been no sign of lagging or connection problems. Each time I have connected to the wireless network I have been able to do whatever I wanted and the connection works flawlessly. Among other things, I frequently connect to my Facebook account, browse the Marketplace, and enter into multi-player gaming sessions. None of these different activities has ever caused me to encounter any problems with connectivity, and it is reassuring to know that I am always able to get fast, easy access to my wireless network. Despite being located around 2 rooms distance away from my router, the signal strength is always high and reliable.
Overall I am really happy with the performance of this product as it allows me to carry on and use all the online features on my Xbox 360 without requiring some hideous and awkward cabled connection. It's so good that I can pretty much forget that it's even there and just get on with my gaming time without thinking about it! The only issue I have is that it seemed very expensive, although I suppose it is only around the same price as buying a game and it has really enhanced my gaming experience all round. It also increases the longevity of games I already own by allowing me to access the online only sections. I would recommend the Microsoft Xbox 360 N Network Adaptor and think it's deserving of a full 5 stars.
