This was my first purchase as a tech newbie, and I decided to put my trust in a brand with a good reputation. I conducted extensive research into routers, and found that as our internet was supplied through orange (formerly wanadoo) I would need to purchase a modem/router which had ADSL capabilities.
Upon opening the box there were a few bundled items to help get you all set up with your internet connection. These items included; 2 Micro filters to separate the phone line into audio/data, ADSL cable, Ethernet cable, install cd, warranty card and dc/ac power supply.
I followed the instructions and as it was my first time setting up any sort of network, was a little worried as to the outcome. After plugging in all relevant cables, and inputting my internet username and password it connected to the internet straight away via the ethernet cable that was attached to my Laptop.
After configuring the settings further I had easily connected wirelessly to the router on my laptop and PS3 as well as setting up security and enabling Mac address filtering, stopping any unwanted guests from logging onto the network.
I would recommend that you change the defualt username and password as I believe it is possible for some people to access your network via the internet and lock yourself out, as the default passwords are common knowledge if you Google it.
I had some problems with the basic firmware that was installed on the router after about 4 months of usage, however I checked the netgear website and updated it to the latest firmware which solved the problem and was extremely easy to carry out.
The router is extremely easy to set up for a basic user, and as I have grown in confidence in this area have found out that the router has a lot more advanced features for the experienced user such as remote access and the ability to ping an ip address on the web. I also managed to configure the router to enable all users on the network share the music via itunes (with some help from google :-)
The router was around £70 when purchased new, and I would not hesitate to buy it again.
