Advantages: Fun, family friendly game, with lots to do and collect
Disadvantages: Clunky controls in rare vehicle sections, potential for jokes to miss point
Anyone familiar with previous LEGO titles (Star Wars, Indiana Jones) will know what to expect here, fun and fast family friendly gaming.
Graphics are excellent, crisp and sharp with no frame rate issues. With the cutscenes being finished with extreme detail. The characterful cutscenes are full of the comic humour seen in previous games, although with this being a whole new story theres nothing solid to parody and sometimes the jokes can fall through compared to Star Wars or Indy, this aside they are still strong overall. One minor issue with the graphics is the combat, with lots of enemys swamping towards your characters it can be difficult to pick out your characters in the melee. Particularly in the heroes freeplay mode when you choose a villain character to solve a puzzle, although this problem has been present in every LEGO crossover game.
Controls are simple, effective and intuative as with previous games. Although the vehicle levels feel clunky, another problem brought back from older games.
The levels are varied and almost always fun, with lots of "buddy" gameplay needed to solve the simple puzzles. This can be done with one player swapping between the playable characters , two people using the same console, or (as far as I believe) 2 people over XBox Live. The one main complaint I would have is that its sometimes hard to tell wether or not a puzzle is part of the main levels progress or purely to gain access to extra areas.
Every level is selected through one of two semi-playable areas, the Heroes from the Batcave, and the Villains from the depths of Arkham Asylum. Each area is made up of several parts including the aforementioned level select, a trophy room where the collected minikits are shown (after being collected in each level), the main hub area (with the selection point for switching areas and the computer to "buy" new characters and extras) and in the villains, a pair of user created characters which are playable in game.
If you liked any of the previous LEGO games (Star Wars, Indiana Jones), then this should continue to hold your intrest in the series. If your a Batman fan with an open sense of humour, this will hold your intrest. Parents dont need to worry about this title being violent etc as all "violence" is comic, theres no gore or bad language (to be honest, theres NO language used) and the gameplay encourages pattern finding, exploration and problem solving.
Summary: An excellent choice. Well worth the asking price of £30ish.
