Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 (Xbox 360)
by he6rt6gr6m Many fans of this popular gaming series know how stale the PES (Winning Eleven in some countries) franchise has become. Many have persistently bemoaned the spiral downwards after changes came after Pro Evolution Soccer 6 - arguably the best PES by far. That is, until now. -Menus- The first things you'll notice when the ... disc is loaded in your Xbox is how slick and sophisticated the menus are. Neatly laid out at the bottom are icons which to the average football fan are self-explanatory. But it's okay if you don't know what they are, as selecting over them with the left or right on your control pad will also bring up the competition or the mode's name. The menu looks very 21st Century - something that its rival FIFA never seems to be able to master. It also flows well from one to another without the need for load screens or stuttering, which FIFA is known to do as it communicated with the servers and so on. -Licenses- Loading straight into a match is simple, selecting your team can be a struggle, given the licensing issues with many clubs (mainly Premier League clubs in England) while the biggest teams in the world remain, such as Barcelona, Manchester United and Juventus. Licenses, of course, cover the correct logos, names, kits, players and stadiums - something PES has always lagged behind with. The licences included in this year's version cover the entire Spanish Liga BBVA (La Liga) , Japan's J-League 1 and 2, the Dutch Eredivisie and Ligue 1 from France. Italy's Serie A clubs and the Brasilerao (Brazil) league clubs have licenses in there, but the league omitted their license from the games. Competition-wise, this is the only officially licensed UEFA Champions League and Europa League game, with both incorperated into the leagues and with their own game modes. -Appearances- While the kit name and numbering isn't official, it's passable, and will be correct with the above licensed teams. Player faces are where the game truly gets exciting though, having individually scanned every licensed player possible. The faces are magnificent parallels of their real-life counterparts, and look stunning when in full attire of the team colours. The stadiums are also scanned seat-for-seat, license permitting again. Juventus' stadium in particular looks stunning. -In-Game- The mechanics of the game still need a lot of work if FIFA enthusiasts are going to switch over though. While the controls are simple and effective out of the box, sometimes it's hard to understand why certain things happen, such as the inability to shoot if you're sprinting with the ball. But tactically, the game surpasses FIFA, having added a very intuitive ProActive AI. This is basically the computer controlling the runs of other players in a mature way. Say, there is no left-winger and the midfield in front of you is closing up. The ProActive AI will ensure that the left-back give you an extra option to give the ball to, making the player run into the open space like a real person would. This does appear in FIFA titles, but can be infuriating at times. Such things as 'Knuckleball' shots have been included as well, which I'd not heard of until purchasing the game. It requires you to power up your shot bar, then tapping shoot again as he is about to strike the ball. This riffles the ball towards the goal like a rocket, but is a very hard thing to master. If you don't get it right, the power bar will just increase, and you'll sky your shot. Unleashing one of these, however, is very satisfying. Goalkeepers have also received some significant upgrades from previous versions, allowing them to be more realistic in situations you would expect them to be. I personally have found average goalkeepers prone to mistakes, such as the inability to get up quick enough after parrying a shot. I guess this is to add realism - you wouldn't expect Stefano Sorrentino to be as reactive as Iker Casillias, for example. Holding possession is a doddle in the game, however shooting is where the challenge can come. There is an ability to finesse your shots, but without direction, these will just go straight to the goalkeeper, so try and get them as far into the corner as you can without sending it wide. Animations after fouls are much more realistic than FIFA also. The players will argue, shout, confront one another and be dragged away from each other - something taken out of FIFA to promote sportsmanship, even though it is still seen on football pitches the world over. The controversial diving technique is also still included in this installment, as it has been for a number of years from Konami, the developer of the game. Again, a realistic element of football (as prominent as ever in the footballing world today) included for the user to have that ultimate experience while playing the game. Just be careful, because the referee will book you if you clearly dive. Certain things you might consider a foul may very well not be, so don't stop play when you think you've won a free kick. The referees seem a lot less strict on this game than on many other versions I've ever seen. -Online- Of course, Online features are present, allowing you to create a team and take them online to compete against other PESers. It allows transfers of players also, which is a very unique tool to have. Online access does require a key which comes packed with brand new copies of the game. Pre-Owned copies will more than likely have had this code used and render it useless. In which case, you must purchase a new one through the game's screens. -Game Modes- As well as the UEFA Champions League mode, Quick-Play Match mode and Online, there is Football Life, which is your chance to create, well, you, and become a legend through the ranks of the PES League and beyond. With the use of an Xbox Live Vision Camera (available for next-to-nothing these days, and sometimes bundled with You're In the Movies), you can take a photo of your face to plaster onto the Legend edit. I've had mixed experiences with this, as the camera is very sub-standard in quality. Matching the saturation and the red, green and blue with the skin tone can be difficult, but with this function having been in PES for a number of years, I can't understand why Konami haven't allowed users to just select a picture to stick on the Legend from a flash drive, for example. Vision Cameras are massively outdated, but if you can match it up, it will look quite impressive. Not as impressive as FIFA's alternative with Be A Pro building on the official website, but it's still fun, in my experience. Become a Legend will take a while to reach the pinnacle of your expectations - you are, after all, starting at the very bottom as a 17 year old breaking into a no-name side and with an agent negotiating with any bigger club you may wish to join. You also earn a wage, XP points that can be spent on upgrades to your performance points, fitness, etc. and you will also unlock items such as boots along the way too. Become a Legend is definitely more of a career mode for the long-term. -Training Mode- The training mode will allow you to practice and master the tricks and techniques in-game in training drills. - a handy tool if you're new to PES, and something that will prompt as soon as you load the game up. -Overall- The game is enjoyable. The mechanics still need work, as I feel they still act too robotic at times. The fluidity is good, however, and the graphics at their best are a good match for the rivalry with FIFA, and the game modes are plentiful. Become a Legend does take time. The game is currently priced at £35 at certain supermarkets such as Tesco and online at Zavvi, however I would expect this to come down as Christmas draws nearer. Read the complete review |

Silent Hill Downpour (Xbox 360)
by simon020187 == SILENT HILL DOWNPOUR == Silent Hill games have been right up there in my all time favourite games and Silent hill Downpour has to go down as one of the best Silent hill games around. Silent Hill Downpour is a survival horror game and is the 8th installment in the Silent Hill franchise. Silent Hill Downpour was developed by Vatra ... Games and published by Konami and is available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 only. Silent Hill Downpour has had some very cruel reviews in my opinion and Silent Hill Downpour in my eyes has FINALLY reached the quality that Silent Hill 2 proved out to be. The story is fantastic and in the game you finally get to explore the whole of the misty and mysterious town of Silent Hill. The game centers around puzzle solving more than combat which I think makes the game much more thrilling. Also Downpour is the first Silent Hill game to heavily involve water hense the name Downpour and I also think this is an added bonus to the game. === STORY === You are Murphy Pendleton a convict in the Ryall State Corrections Facility who was convicted for several years after being caught stealing a police cruiser. Murphy agrees a deal with George Sewell who works as an officer inside the prison. Sewell secretly helps Murphy set up an inmate in the shower in which Murphy beats to death with a pipe and stabs him with a knife for a reason unknown till later in the game. Murphy and a few of his fellow inmates are transfer to Wayside Maximum Security Prison after a riot breaks out but as they are being transported to the new facility the bus crashes just outside of Silent Hill after the road just vanished into thin air. Murphy awakens near the crashed bus with nobody else around him and he sets off, he finally reaches a gas station after a little walk which in turn leads him to the hell that is Silent Hill. Now Murphy must find a way out of the misty and mysterious town that is full of fear and torment. Is there a way out of Silent Hill for Murphy? === GAMEPLAY === There is only one game mode in Silent Hill Downpour which is the story mode but I think that's much better because any online mode would of meant a much shorter story mode. When starting the game you will notice that the camera is just like any other Silent Hill game and set in a third person perspective which does make the game more enjoyable in my eyes. You basically get a book where Murphy will put everything he finds such as paper with clues, documents and even maps into it so you can access it at anytime. Murphy will walk cautiously but by pressing a button he can run for what seems a very long time without even getting tired but in this Silent Hill its actually usually a good idea to run when in combat rather than fight. Murphy visits a lot of places such as the town and parts in the town which include a bank, police station, church and many more and most of the places are of decent size so there is a lot to explore. Most of the towns doors cant be opened but its always best to check because there are a few doors that lead to new places and can always have some very valuable items in them. However when you're in a big place for exploring such as the police station then you will notice that almost every door can be opened and explored. Previous Silent Hill games had doors galore but would never open and you found yourself clicking on every door with no chance of it opening. The places you explore are much more detailed now and give the feeling that Silent Hill is back to its best like in Silent Hill 2. The game is actually quite suspenseful and creepy at times which Silent Hill is best known for. It also has those moments that make you jump and make you feel that your heart is in your mouth. I myself have jumped several times with this game and I just keep getting lured into it more and more its really exciting. There are a lot of new bits to this Silent Hill which include new enemies, new story and new environments to explore. The combat isn't the best but its much more realistic than any other survival horror game because now your weapons can break and weapons are found in relatively sensible places and for example in an older Silent Hill game you would find a gun on a park bench but not in this game because the guns are much harder to find. I found the shotgun in a locked room in a shop and I found a pistol in a locked drawer. Also weapons such as sticks, wrenches, axes and more can be found and used but all have different durability. Axes are one of my favs because not only do they deal a nice amount of damage but they can actually be used to hack away at boarded up areas and doors for more exploring and to continue the game. Something else that is new to Silent Hill Downpour is side quests. There are lots of side quests in the game that can reward really well and earn achievements and more, definitely worth doing. The puzzles in the game are varied because at the beginning of the game you can choose what difficulty you would like the puzzles to be with easy, normal and hard. Items tend to be in different places and further away on a harder setting so that leads to even more exploring. There are 3 or 4 huge different areas of town to explore with lots of side quests and more. I also love the rain and other storms that the game has because if you're outside whilst its pouring down with rain then you better hurry and get inside whilst it stops because that's when all the monsters come out to play. The streets are full of them when its raining so be warned. Lots of different enemies and some exciting new bosses. There is no Pyramid Head in this Silent Hill but there is someone equally as bad if not worse. There is a little bit of backtracking in the game but nothing to make it bad and the backtracking for once is actually really enjoyable. The game does have a bit of a frame rate issue and is a little glitchy in places but nothing dreadfully bad. Silent Hill Downpour is phenomenal overall and to make things more interesting there are tons of items scattered all over the place from health packs, key items, money, coins, artifacts and more. Silent Hill Downpour is a thrilling and exciting new game that really should get more credit. === GRAPHICS === Silent Hill Downpour graphics are superb in my opinion and this is by far the best looking Silent Hill game. One thing that impressed me the most was the weather effects the game has because its phenomenal. The rain and thunderstorms in particular look absolutely stunning. I was also extremely impressed with the look of the town and how well its designed to detail. I wasn't too impressed with the main protagonist of the game because he just seems really plain looking and very similar to some of the previous characters such as the main protagonist from Silent Hill 4 The Room. Enemies are really good and most are very well designed but the best thing is they're all new monsters which makes the game even better, although its a shame the famous nurses aren't on it as well as Pyramid Head. Overall the game looks stunning with a few glitches the only real problem. === SOUND EFFECTS === The sound effects are probably part of the reason the game is actually very creepy at times. The music is by someone entirely different from previous games and has been completely changed but it really does work and seems to keep you more on edge through the game. Its a very different type of music but definitely works well. Something that impressed me a lot was the way the game tried making things worse with the freaky sound effects such as screams and creaks when you're walking and other bits like clanging and banging because it sounded really good but at the same time quite frightening. The characters voices are very good as well and sound like a proper Silent Hill game. Overall the sound effects are definitely a highlight of the game and stand out tremendously. === DIFFICULTY & LONGEVITY === Silent Hill Downpour can be a very difficult game but it depends on what difficulty setting you have the game on for each thing. There are two options which are puzzle difficulty and game difficulty which can be altered to suit your gaming style. I tend to have both on hardest setting because it makes it a proper battle for survival this way. Having puzzle difficulty on easy makes the game far too easy in my view because you don't have far to go to get items and other bits. Game difficulty varies and the easier you have it the easier the combat is and it alters how many monsters will attack etc etc. The game varies from easy to hard on each but because the game offers alternative endings and secret endings you will find you might need to go through the game numerous times. The length of the game is quite good in my opinion and the main reason for this is because the Silent Hill games have great replay value and it never gets boring however many times you playthrough the game. One playthrough on easy might only last around 10 hours but on the much harder setting where backtracking is involved and trying to survive more frequently then the game can last around the 20 hour mark. The game is even better because you definitely need to go through numerous times to unlock everything and to get the other endings to the story. Plus with side quests the game can last even longer. So overall Silent Hill Downpour is quite lengthy. === ACHIEVEMENTS === There are a total of 41 achievements on Silent Hill Downpour and most you will get from doing the main story and some will be achieved by finding and completing side quests. However there are some that require you to finish the game on different difficulty settings for both game difficulty and puzzle difficulty. Some achievements involve killing so many different types of enemies and for achieving different endings in the game. So overall a nice mix of achievements are on offer and will definitely make the game last longer and keep you on your toes. === PROS === *Silent Hill Downpour has a very solid story as usual. *Multiple endings, lots of enemies, tons of weapons and items as well. *The music is fantastic, sound effects are brilliant and the graphics are really good. *The town is back and looking better than ever full of fog and creepy monsters. *Its a quite creepy and scary game at times and definitely lives up to the title of survival horror. *Explore the whole town and visit some exciting places such as the police station, a bank and much more. === CONS === *A few glitches and the frame rate is a little dodgy and slow at times. *Can be quite difficult at times if you have it on a tougher setting than easy. *Contains bits that some gamers may find disturbing and should be an 18 not a 15. *Could be too scary for some gamers and definitely not for the lighthearted. *No multiplayer although developers had considered it. Maybe next time eh? === FINAL THOUGHT === Silent Hill Downpour has rocketed up in my all time favourite charts because it simply is fantastic and its a well designed game overall. Yeah its a little weird and it certainly has made me jump on more than one occasion but I think that adds to the game success and one of the reasons why it works really well overall. This is a game I would definitely recommend. If you loved the older Silent Hill games such as Silent Hill 2 & 3 then you will be glad to know its finally back at its best with Downpour and similar in ways to those games. If you wasn't too keen on Silent Hill Homecoming then you will be glad to know that this is far better than that (even though i liked it). Also if you like a good survival horror game this is right up your street and one of the better survival games out there because it really is more difficult to survive. The game has an age rating of 15+ but I do feel there is enough in it for it to be considered an 18+. The game manual isn't the best but it does offer some good info on the game and what it entails. The game is relatively new out and some may find its a little pricey. I got mine from Asda for £39.97 but I do feel its worth it. Amazon and eBay have the game for around £45 which is ridiculous. Overall Silent Hill Downpour has to go down as one of the best games so far this year. Whilst the price is a little hefty, the game is definitely worth it in my eyes. I would give Silent Hill Downpour a stunning 9/10! Review also on Ciao under the username: MrBrightside1987! Read the complete review |

Silent Hill Homecoming (Xbox 360)
by simon020187 == SILENT HILL: HOMECOMING == The Silent Hill games have always been one of the best survival horror games and most notably one of the first real survival games. Silent Hill was first released on the PS1 and has since taken games such as Resident Evil right to the wire in terms of best survival horror game. Silent Hill Homecoming is ... definitely one of the best survival horror games available for the Xbox 360 and in my eyes its the closest the game has been to Silent Hill 1 & 2. Silent Hill Homecoming is also available for the PS3 and the PC. The game was developed by Double Helix Games and published by one of my all time favourite companies called Konami. Silent Hill Homecoming features a similar story to that of the other Silent Hill games but its what we like. === STORY === You take the role of Alex and the game starts with him in a nightmare and hes looking for his lost younger brother called Josh. Alex awakens from his nightmare and finds hes in a taxi on the way to his hometown of Shepherd's Glen. Upon arriving in his hometown Alex notices that something is terribly wrong. The town is covered in deep thick fog and is deserted from what Alex can tell. Alex sets off and also finds that many roads have fallen into disrepair or simply collapsed into nothingness. After returning home Alex is saddened to find that his mum is in a very bad way and he learns that his brother Josh has actually gone missing. Now Alex must enter the mysterious town full of mysterious things and he must find his brother before its too late. Can Alex save him and uncover the truth behind Shepherd's Glen aka Silent Hill. === GAMEPLAY === Silent Hill Homecoming has very similar gameplay features to previous Silent Hill games and to be fair there isn't an awful lot of difference between the games yet Silent Hill Homecoming is still considered a fantastic game. As usual there is only the one playable game mode which is story mode but there is different difficulty settings in which hold different endings to the game when you complete them. The game is also set from a third person perspective like many other survival horror games and it works really well. Also in Silent Hill Homecoming is a new playable character called Alex Shepherd and to be fair he seems exactly like previous characters from the game series. Hes an average looking character but for some reason he stands out really well in the game. The basic aim of the game is to follow the storyline and solve what ever puzzles stand in the way. Also whilst exploring you have to be extremely careful and aware of the dangers in the game. Creatures like nurses are back and after your blood and there are also many other enemies that want you dead. Shepherds Glen is very much like that of Silent Hill and it definitely gives gamers a feel to the older Silent Hill games. Also in Silent Hill Homecoming is harder puzzles and harder bosses. You also find drawings, photographs and interact with numerous characters who could help on your story. You will also come across weapons such as melee weapons, firearms or other weapons. Most of the time its best to use melee weapons because of low ammo scattered through the game. There is also tons of key items but most are easily found. Alex also finds and uses his flashlight to help him see in the dark and his radio to help detect when enemies are close. In Silent Hill Homecoming there are plenty of different environments to explore even more so than the previous games and to be fair this works perfectly. Along with new environments comes a new combat system for the game that has been worked on a lot. Instead of just doing the same strike over and over again you can now do combos with melee weapons and you also have the ability to dodge attacks. Different creatures do different attack and some could be weak to your melee attacks whilst some might be weaker to firearms. A lot of the game is centered around the town and involves running from most creatures unless you want to be ripped to pieces by them. Silent Hill Homecoming definitely has a lot to offer in terms of gameplay and the game does involve a few scary bits that might make you jump right out of your seat. There are numerous different items scattered throughout the game and most of them you can miss so its always best to explore. Things like med packs and bullets become extremely valuable later because the game gets harder as you get further. Its also always best to try save ammo and health for the numerous bosses. There are a lot of different creatures in the game and a lot of different ferocious bosses. My favourite boss returns and if you've played a Silent Hill game you will know him by the name Pyramid Head. Overall Silent Hill Homecoming has a lot to offer fans of the game but it doesn't offer an awful lot of new stuff. I do like how they brought some of the old things back and in my opinion it definitely made the game better. === GRAPHICS === Each Silent Hill game that has been released has gotten better in terms of graphics over the years and Silent Hill Homecoming is by far the best for graphics. With some astonishing looking environments especially the town of Shepherds Glen and some beautifully designed characters. One of the better parts is the way the fog thickens in the game and you can always tell when something serious is going to happen. Also the design of the creatures is much better from previous games and definitely stands out a lot more. Pyramid Head and other bosses all look fantastic as expected. I have to say the graphics really surprised me to this game as I expected them to be a little shallow. I was also impressed with the colouring of the game as it gives a feel of darkness and Silent Hill is all about darkness. === SOUND EFFECTS === Silent Hill Homecoming features some really good sound effects that definitely benefit the game overall. the characters are voiced perfectly and fit right into the mix of the game giving gamers the full experience. By far the best part to the the Silent Hill sound effects is the Silent Hill soundtrack to the game as it features some brilliant tracks that are sure to keep you on edge all the way through the game. I also liked certain sound effects that stood out in the game. One being Pyramid Head dragging his massive sword as it always makes you aware hes around and not to be messed with unless you want to die a quick death. Overall the sound effects are really good to the game and its always great to have great music to go with that like this game has to offer. === DIFFICULTY & LONGEVITY === I always say for difficulty that it depends how good you are at games. However Silent Hill has so many difficulty settings to choose from at the start of the game. It doesn't add bonuses but the harder the difficulty the less items such as healing items and ammo it gives you and creatures and bosses are harder to kill. The puzzles are no harder which is a good job because some can be misleading to say the least with the way they are presented.Overall I would say its average in terms of difficulty and i would expect most gamers to be able to do this game easily enough. For me the game was a little easy on the easiest setting but caused a few problems on the hardest setting but when I got the hang of the combat system it was quite easy. The length of the game is always the biggest disappointment nowadays and its no different here. However because you have to go through numerous times for different endings the game can be seen as reasonable in terms of length. However if you like many are playing just to finish the game once then your looking at around the 20 hour mark depending on the skill level of yourself. 20 hours isn't all that bad and I do believe these games can still be enjoyed on numerous playthroughs in which most games cant. Also it doesn't help that there is only the one playable game mode. Overall the length of the game is just okay. === ACHIEVEMENTS === Achievements for an Xbox 360 game is definitely one of the main points to many gamers nowadays because a lot of gamers are achievement hunters. Silent Hill Homecoming only features a total of just 32 achievements but don't let that put you off because some of them are fairly tricky to achieve and most are time consuming. You also cant get them all on one playthrough and some involve answering certain questions in the game to have a different affect on the games outcome. Some other achievements include killing certain creatures or finding certain items but overall there is a nice mixture of achievements available to acquire. === PROS === *The story is really good even though its similar to other Silent Hill games. *Lots of puzzles and a new combat system. *There are a lot of different weapons and tons of items to find. *A lot of action and some beautifully designed environments. *Ton of new features to the game which includes a fantastic soundtrack. *Pyramid Head returns!!!! === CONS === *The game is a little short in terms of length. *Could be quite difficult for some especially the bosses or puzzles. *Contains a lot of disturbing scenes and a fair amount of blood. *Might be a little scary for some gamers. *Only one playable game mode available and of course no multiplayer. === FINAL THOUGHT === Silent Hill Homecoming is close to being one of the best survival horror games of all time and mainly due to the fact its very much like previous Silent Hill games but has more to offer. Also with new things like the combat system it makes this game even more so entertaining. Silent Hill Homecoming will for sure make you jump at least once through the whole thing. I have always been a massive fan of Silent Hill right from the very first one and its great to see similarities. I would definitely recommend the game especially if you love a good survival horror game because its one of the best available and I would also seriously recommend it if you love the Silent Hill series. If you went off the games after the first few then fear not because it offers bits from 1 & 2 which will make you enjoy it a lot. Silent Hill Homecoming is definitely one that most gamer swill enjoy but if your not a fan of these games or have a weak stomach then this should be a definite miss. The game manual to the game is reasonable as it offers all relevant information. The game also has an age certificate of 18+ because of the gruesome scenes of violence, gore and blood plus it also features very strong language throughout. I bought the game from my local Game shop a few years back for £17.99 which is incredibly cheap for such a fantastic game. Its now selling even cheaper for around £12 on Amazon. A great price for a great game. One of my favourite survival horror games that gets a very solid 8/10 from me! Review also on Ciao under the username: MrBrightside1987! Read the complete review |
